SrMoO4 doped with rare earth are still scarce nowadays and have attracted great attention due to their applications as scintillating materials in electro-optical like solid-state lasers and optical fibers, for instance. In this work Sr1-xEuxMoO4 powders, where x = 0.01; 0.03 and 0.05, were synthesized by Complex Polymerization (CP) Method. The structural and optical properties of the SrMoO4:Eu3+ were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy, and through Photoluminescent Measurements (PL). Only a crystalline scheelite-type phase was obtained when the powders were heat-treated at 800 A degrees C for 2 h, 2 theta = 27.8A degrees (100% peak). The excitation spectra of the SrMoO4:Eu3+ (lambda(Em.) = 614 nm) presented the characteristic band of the Eu3 + 5L6 transition at 394 nm and a broad band at around 288 nm ascribed to the charge-transfer from the O (2p) state to the Mo (4d) one in the SrMoO4 matrix. The emission spectra of the SrMoO4:Eu3+ powders (lambda(Exc.) = 394 and 288 nm) show the group of sharp emission bands among 523-554 nm and 578-699 nm, assigned to the D-5(1)-> F-7(0,1and 2) and D-5(0)-> F-7(0,1,2,3 and 4), respectively. The band related to the D-5(0)-> F-7(0) transition indicates the presence of Eu3+ site without inversion center. This hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that the band referent to the D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition is the most intense in the emission spectra.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is a powerful tool to fabricate ultrathin films with highly ordered structures and controllable molecular array for efficient energy and electron transfer, allowing the construction of devices at molecular level. One method to obtain LB films consists in the mixture of classical film-forming molecules, for example Stearic Acid (SA) and functional metal complex. In this work NH(4)[Eu(bmdm)(4)], where the organic ligand bmdm is (butyl methoxy-dibenzoyl-methane) or (1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)propane-1,3-dione) was used to build up Langmuir and LB films. Langmuir isotherms were obtained from (i) NH(4)[Eu(bmdm)(4)] complex and (ii) NH(4)[Eu(bmdm)(4)]/SA (1:1). Results indicated that (i) form multilayer structure; however the surface pressure was insufficient to obtain LB films, and (ii) can easily reproduce and build LB films. The dependence of number of layers in the UV absorption spectra suggest that the complex did not hydrolyze or show decomposition, UV spectral differences observed between the solution and the LB film indicate that the complex has a highly ordered arrangement in the film and the complex has an interaction with SA. Excitation spectra confirm a ligand-europium energy transfer mechanism. The transition lines of Eu(3+) ion were observed in emission spectra of all films, the photoluminescence spectra indicate a fluorescence enhanced effect with the number of LB layers. Transparent oxyfluoride glasses and beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals containing glass-ceramics were prepared with varying Eu(3+) content (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6%). The effect of Eu(3+) content on the preparation of glass-ceramics was investigated. From differential scanning calorimetry, the T(x)-T(g)(T(x)-temperature of the onset of crystallization; T(g)-glass transition temperature) parameter for glasses has shown slight variation, and an exothermic peak near T(g) called the ceramization temperature (T(c)) has been observed. Heat treatments were performed at this temperature to obtain transparent glass-ceramics containing beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals, identified by x-ray diffraction. Heat treatments for different periods of time were performed and were observed to be very important in the control of the crystal size and of the crystallization rate. Based upon the absorption spectra, the scattering level due to the presence of beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals in the glass-ceramics was observed to be similar to that for the mother glasses. Detailed analysis of emission spectra and decay time measurements led to the identification of Eu(3+) ions as the beta-PbF(2) crystalline phase. Excitation spectra at 70 K show the interaction of Eu(3+) ions with the fluorogermanate network.

The influence of the temperature on the nucleation of silver nanoparticles (NPs) in Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PbO-GeO2 glasses was studied in this work. The infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion (UC) luminescence of Tm3+ ions was used to probe the NPs nucleation and the results were correlated with the increase of the heat-treatment temperature. Emission spectra in the blue-red region were measured by exciting the samples with a cw 980 nm diode laser in resonance with the Yb3+ transition (F-2(7/2) -> F-2(5/2)). The results were correlated with transmission electron microscopy measurements and revealed the different behavior of the nucleation process as a function of temperature.The enhanced UC emission in the visible region is attributed to the increased local field in the proximity of the silver NPs combined with the Yb3+ -> Tm3+ energy transfer. In this work, a SiO2 spherical were prepared by the Stober Method and then recovered with a single layer of Eu2O3 oxide (SiO2@Eu2O3) obtained by the Polymeric Precursor Method. The SiO2@Eu2O3 powder was heated treated at 100, 300, 400, 500 and 800 A degrees C. The samples were characterized by the Scanning Electonic Microscopy (SEM), Thermal Analysis (TGA/DTA), and the luminescent properties of the SiO2@Eu2O3 powders were studied by their emission and excitation spectra as well as by the lifetime measurements of the Eu3+ D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) transition. The SEM analysis shows that the silica prepared by the Stober Method is spherical with a particle size of 460 nm. The emission spectra of the SiO2@Eu2O3 powders presented the Eu3+ characteristics bands related to the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions at 577, 591, 616, 649 and 695 nm, respectively. The band related to the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) transition is the most intense in the spectra, and its intensity decreases with the temperature enhancement. The decay curves of the SiO2@Eu2O3 samples presented monoexponential features, and the obtained lifetime values were higher than the Eu2O3 oxide. It was possible to conclude that the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) hypersensitive transition is strongly dependent on the Eu3+ surrounding.

Diurea cross-linked bridged silsesquioxanes (BSs) C(10)C(11)C(10) derived from organosilane precursors, including decylene chains as side spacers and alkylene chains with variable length as central spacers (EtO)(3)Si- (CH(2))(10)-Y(CH(2))(n)-Y-(CH(2))(10)-Si(OEt)(3) (n = 7, 9-12; Y = urea group and Et = ethyl), have been synthesized through the combination of self-directed assembly and an acid-catalyzed sol gel route involving the addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and a large excess of water. This new family of hybrids has enabled us to conclude that the length of the side spacers plays a unique role in the structuring of alkylene-based BSs, although their morphology remains unaffected. All the samples adopt a lamellar structure. While the alkylene chains are totally disordered in the case of the C(10)C(7)C(10) sample, a variable proportion of all-trans and gauche conformers exists in the materials with longer central spacers. The highest degree of structuring occurs for n = 9. The inclusion of decylene instead of propylene chains as side spacers leads to the formation of a stronger hydrogen-bonded urea-urea array as evidenced by two dimensional correlation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis. The emission spectra and emission quantum yields of the C(10)C(n)C(10) Cm materials are similar to those reported for diurea cross-linked alkylene-based BSs incorporating propylene chains as side spacers and prepared under different experimental conditions. The emission of the C(10)C(n)C(10) hybrids is ascribed to the overlap of two distinct components that occur within the urea cross-linkages and within the siliceous nanodomains. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy has provided evidence that the average distance between the siliceous domains and the urea cross-links is similar in the C(10)C(n)C(10) BSs and in oxyethylene-based hybrid analogues incorporating propylene chains as side spacers (diureasils), an indication that the longer side chains in the former materials adopt gauche conformations. It has also allowed us to demonstrate for the first time that the emission features of the urea-related component of the emission of alkylene-based BSs depend critically on the length of the side spacers.

Excitation and dynamic emission spectra of Eu3+ ions were simultaneously used with FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to study the structural evolution during SnO2 sol → gel → xerogel conversion. Results make evident an increase of the surroundings symmetry for the Eu3+ ions dissolved in SnO2 matrix and a decrease of the amount of hydroxo groups (Sn-OH) during drying. These phenomena were associated to the pursuit of the condensation reaction after gelation. © 1994 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Tetrahedral nickel(0) complexes [NiL4], [Ni(dppe)2] and [Ni(CO)2(SbPh3)2] (L=AsPh3, SbPh3, P(OPh)3, dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) were prepared by reduction of NiCl2·6H2O with NaBH4 under N2 or CO atmosphere in the presence of the ligand. The complex [Ni(SbPh3)4] was also obtained by electrolysis at -1.3 V (Ag/Ag+), under a platinum gauze, of the system NiCl2·6H2O/SbPh3 (molar ratio=1:4). These complexes, both in the solid state and in solution, show an orange emission at room temperature, when excited with UV radiation. A qualitative molecular orbital diagram for the [NiL4] complexes is proposed. Electronic absorption spectra of the complexes show bands near 400 nm assigned as MLCT π*2e←d2t2. A 1A1←3T1 transition is suggested for the emission observed in these systems. Lifetimes in microsecond range were estimated from time-resolved emission spectra. Spectroscopic properties of the free ligands have also been investigated.

Glass formation in the pseudo ternary system ZnF2-GdF3-BaF2-InF3 and other complex systems stabilized by NaF, CaF2, AlF3 and YF3 have been investigated. Samples with greater stability have been prepared and their properties measured. Optical absorption and emission spectra of Gd3+ ions doped glasses with 2, 4, 10 and 20% concentrations have been measured. Using the Judd-Ofelt theory and the experimental oscillator strengths, the Judd-Ofelt parameters have been calculated. The emission of Gd3+ ions from 6I and 6P has been detected and the lifetime has been measured.
