Although the exact cause of neuronal loss in Parkinson's disease is not known, evidence points to oxidative stress and the production of reactive oxygen species as the main events that occur in the substantia nigra pars compacta of the brain of parkinsonians. EGb761 is an extract of the leaves from the Ginkgo biloba tree that has been reported as an antioxidant and neuroprotective agent. The objective of this work was to perform a systematic review of the studies that analysed the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract on Parkinson's disease or Parkinsonism. This research was conducted using the following databases: Medline, PsycInfo, Cinahl, Sigle, Lilacs, Scielo, Cochrane Library, and Embase. Initially, we selected 32 articles. After a more detailed analysis, only 10 articles remained. One of the hypotheses for the positive effect of EGb761 on Parkinson's disease is the reduction or inhibition of monoamine-oxidase activity. This enzyme metabolises dopamine, inducing the formation of free radicals, which in turn damage nigrostriatal neurons. Another hypothesis is that the neuroprotective effect of EGb761 against 6-hydroxydopamine, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine and MPP+ toxins. As there are few studies on the effect of EGb761 on humans, this review could contribute new data to further the discussion of this issue.

Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic disease of the nervous system, characterized by degeneration of neurons in the mesencephalic substantia nigra, leading to a clinical state of rest tremor, bradykinesia, muscular rigidity and postural instability. Physical therapy seeks to act by slowing the progression of the disease and when done in a group and maintain and / or improving the motor skills of the individual, can provide psychosocial benefi ts. Objective: examine the infl uence of the physical therapy group in balance, functional mobility and quality of life of individuals with PD. Method: participated in this study 04 subjects were female, mean age 67.75 (± 9.5) years, with medical diagnosis of PD, stages 1 to 3 of the Hoehn & Yahr. Before starting treatment, subjects underwent an assessment of the balance (BBS), functional mobility (TUG) and the quality of life (PDQ-39).The treatment was performed in groups, for a period of 10 weeks, lasting 60 minutes each session twice a week, totaling 20 sessions of physiotherapy. Upon completion of the treatment period the subjects were again assessed for balance, functional mobility and quality of life. The data were analyzed using the Student t-test, with signifi cance level of 5% (p ≤ 0.05). Results: statistical analysis showed signifi cant differences in three variables: equilibrium (p = 0.010), functional mobility (p = 0.029) and quality of life (p = 0.004), after physiotherapy intervention. Conclusion: physiotherapy treatment was group provides better balance, functional mobility and quality of life of patients with PD.

Evaluate the effects caused by L-DOPA on cardiovascular and autonomic parameters in an animal model of Parkinsonism induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA).Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to bilateral microinfusion of 6-OHDA or saline (sham group) in the substantia nigra, and treated by gavage with L-DOPA or water for 7days after surgery. On the 6th day the rats were subjected to femoral artery catheterization for cardiovascular recording. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were evaluated at baseline and during head up tilt (HUT) protocol. Spectral analysis of cardiovascular variability was performed using the V2.4 CardioSeries software v2.4. The lesion was quantified by dopamine levels in the striatum.Dopamine levels in the striatum were decreased in 6-OHDA rats (sham: 4.79±0.49ng/mg; 6-OHDA: 1.99±0.68ng/mg) and were not recovered by Prolopa treatment. Baseline values of MAP and HR were not different between groups. HUT induced an increase in MAP and HR (ΔMAP: 17±1mmHg, ΔHR: 39±4bpm) that were attenuated in 6-OHDA and in Prolopa treated animals. At baseline, the systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variance was lower in the 6-OHDA and sham Prolopa groups. Spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity was higher at baseline in the 6-OHDA group as compared to all studied groups. Our data suggest that treatment with Prolopa did not interfere with cardiovascular variables at baseline. However, during HUT, the 6-OHDA and Prolopa control animals presented a lower cardiovascular compensation, suggesting a possible autonomic impairment in Parkinsonism induced by 6-OHDA.

Introduction: Bamboos belong to the family Graminae, Bambusoidae subfamily, represented by about 1,250 species worldwide. Originally employed in construction and power, are currently the subject of investigations related to its therapeutic properties in neoplasms. The main species used for therapeutic purposes based on popular knowledge are: Phyllostachys nigra; Bambusa breiflora; tuldoides Bambusa textilis and Bambusa. The literature on the therapeutic action of bamboo species is scarce, but recent studies report a promising effect in the treatment of cancer and other chronic diseases. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate qualitatively the phytochemical composition of plant extract obtained from the leaves of the bamboo species Bambusa textilis, comparing this composition from vegetable leaves with 18 and 24 months of age. Methodology: After collecting plant leaves with 18 or 24 months, they were identified and submitted to drying and milling. For qualitative analysis of its components were employed methods of macroscopic evaluation (mucilage), method of benzoin (resin), reaction Shinoda (flavonoids), reaction with gelatin solution (tannins), boiling and foaming (saponins) and jobs of reactive Wagner, Bertrand, Dragendorff, Mayer, picric acid and tannic acid (alkaloids) (Biavatti; MILK, 2007). Results: in the youngest leaves were found positive for alkaloids, flavonoids, resins and saponins. In the leaves of the plant with 24 months were found only alkaloids flavonoids and resins. Conclusion: the composition of vegetable substances were found associated with a significant therapeutic potential difference and the phytochemical composition in comparison with plant leaves 18 or 24 months. Additional studies are needed to quantify these components, as well as the clarification of its action in the fight against cancer and chronic diseases.
