We show room temperature charge-density wave (CDW) characteristics in d.c. and a.c. electric data in pressed pellets of lightly doped poly(3-methylthiophene). The possibility of a Peierls glass is discussed and metastables states are observed. D.C. and A.C. data also show a state with negative differencial resistance.

A computer-assisted method for analysing photoacoustic spectra has been developed in the Windows(TM) environment with the use of an easy graphical interface, the computer simulation was carried out with the aim of using the entire expression of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory, thus permitting multiple applications. The simulation was applied to a system that mimics the electron transfer process in which the concentration of octaethylporphin donor molecules was constant whereas the concentration of duroquinone and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1, l-benzoquinone acceptor molecules varied. The increment of the acceptor concentration influenced the photoacoustic amplitude and phase signals. In the phase signal a significant shift to smaller values was observed, denoting a faster heat generation. The analysis of the photoacoustic signal enabled the determination of the thermal diffusivity, the result obtained through the simulation was about (7 +/- 1) x 10(-7) m(2) s(-1) indicating that changes in the photoacoustic phase signals were due to the electron transfer process rather than changes in the thermal properties of the sample.

Spectroscopic properties of blends formed by bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) doped with Europium (III) acetylacetonate [Eu(acac)(3)], have been studied by photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) and photoluminescent (PL) spectroscopy. Emission and excitation spectra, excited state decay times, and quantum efficiency have been evaluated as well. PAS studies evidenced chemical interactions between the Europium complex and the PC/PMMA blend, which presented typical percolation threshold behavior regarding the Eu3+ content. PL spectra evidenced the photoluminescence of the Eu3+ incorporated into the blend. Photoluminescence property enhancement was observed for the composite in comparison with the precursor compound. Optimized emission quantum efficiency was observed for the 60/40 blend doped with 2% and 4% Europium (III) acetylacetonate. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The kinetics of the buildup and decay of photoinduced birefringence was examined in a series of host-guest systems: azobenzene-containing crown ethers, differing in the size of the crowns, dissolved in a poly (methyl methacrylate) matrix. In all samples, the kinetics of the buildup of the birefringence was reasonably described by a sum of two exponential functions, the time constants being inversely proportional to the intensity of the pumping light and the magnitudes of the signals at the saturation level depending on the pumping light intensity and sample thickness. The dark decays were best described by the stretched exponential function, with the characteristic parameters (time constant and stretch coefficient) being practically independent of the type of crown ether. The time constants of the signal decay were orders of magnitude shorter than the respective constants of the dark isomerization of the azo crown ethers, thus indicating that the process controlling the decay was a relaxation of the polymer matrix and/or a rearrangement of the flexible parts of the crowns. The free mycolic acid fraction from Rhodococcus lentifragmentus was derivatized to methyl esters and further fractionated into saturated (F-0), monounsaturated (F-1) and diunsaturated (F-2) species using argentation-TLC. Methyl esters fractions F-0, F-1 and F-2, accounting for approximately 7.4%, 53.1% and 39.5%, respectively, were analyzed by electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) mass spectrometries. According to EI-MS, peaks observed for M(+)-18, that were prominent compared to those representing M(+)-32 and M(+)-(18 + 32), indicated that the carbon chain size ranged from C-36 to C-48. The pyrolytic cleavage of methyl mycolates (R(2)-CHOH-CH(R(1))-COOCH3), following the McLafferty rearrangement released fragment ions corresponding to, (a) the alpha-subunit, representing the fatty acid methyl ester (R(1)-CH2-COOCH3), methyl hexadecanoate, methyl tetradecanoate and methyl dodecanoate in decreasing order of relative intensity of peaks, and (b) the beta-subunit, representing the meroaldehyde moiety (R(2)-CHO). The saturated meroaldehyde species exhibited peaks representing meroaldehyde minus 18 mass units in which R(2) ranged from C19H39 to C31H63. The monunsaturated species exhibited peaks representing the meroaldehyde in which R(2) ranged from C19H37 to C31H61; peaks corresponding to meroaldehyde minus 18 mass units appeared only in the most abundant components, C29H57CHO, C27H53CHO, C25H49CHO and C31H61CHO, in a decreasing order of relative abundance. The diunsaturated species exhibited peaks essentially corresponding to meroaldehyde in which R(2) corresponded to C31H59 and C29H55; the latter displayed a relative intensity that was about one-half compared to that of the former. Fractions F-0, F-1 and F-2 showed a more intense pyrolytic fragmentation under CI-MS in contrast to results found under EI-MS. Therefore, peaks representing the alpha-subunit and the beta-subunit were more prominent than the ones representing the fragmentation of the hydrocarbon chain. Moreover, the beta-subunit of saturated species exhibited peaks corresponding to meroaldehyde plus hydrogen, and no dehydration of the beta-subunit occurred in this case. In turn, the beta-subunit of monounsaturated and diunsaturated species showed peaks representing both the meroaldehyde plus hydrogen and its dehydration product plus hydrogen. Thus, the presence of unsaturation in the meroaldehyde subunit of methyl mycolate facilitates appearance of dehydration fragment ions under chemical ionization procedure.

We analyzed the effect of the acylpolyaminetoxin JSTX-3 on the epileptogenic discharges induced by perfusion of human hippocampal slices with artificial cerebrospinal fluid lacking Mg2+ or N-methyl-D-aspartate. Hippocampi were surgically removed from patients with refractory medial temporal lobe epilepsy, sliced in the surgical room and taken to the laboratory immersed in normal artificial cerebrospinal fluid. Epileptiform activity was induced by perfusion with Mg2+-free artificial cerebrospinal fluid or by iontophoretically applied N-methyl-D-aspartate and intracellular and field recordings of CAI neurons were performed. The ictal-like discharges induced by Mg2+-free artificial cerebrospinal fluid and N-methyl-D-aspartate were blocked by incubation with JSTX-3. This effect was similar to that obtained with the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist DL(-)2-amino-5 phosphonovaleric acid. Our findings suggest that in human hippocampal neurons, the antiepileptic effect of JSTX-3 is mediated by its action on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor.

1-Benzoyl-3-benzylguanidine and 1-benzoyl-3-benzyl-O-ethylisourea were synthesized in good yields (68 and 76%, respectively) from 1-benzoyl-3-benzylthiourea and benzoyl-ethylthiocarbamate in dry media conditions using KF-Al2O3 under microwave irradiation. Strong nucleophilic amines promoted the sulfur elimination by attack on the thiocarbonyl group in both thiourea and thiocarbamates to afford guanidines and isourea, respectively. Transesterification products were obtained from p-TsOH catalyzed reaction of thiocarbamate with alcohols under MW-solvent-free conditions. Very important non-purely thermal MW specific effects were evidenced and attributed to stabilization by coulombic interactions between materials and waves. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
