This study compared autonomic modulation in swimmers and non-athletes in relation to body composition. A total of 28 athletes with a mean age of 19.7 +/- 2.9 years were evaluated who had at least 2 years of swimming training, trained approximately 7,000 m per day, with a frequency of 5 days per week, and who competed at national level. The control group was made up of 21 volunteers (23.0 +/- 2.5 years), who did not practice regular physical activity (<2 hours per week). Body composition was estimated using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and autonomic modulation was assessed by heart rate variability (HRV). The results show that there were significant differences in autonomic modulation and body composition between the groups, and that the athletes had a higher overall variability (standard deviation of all normal intervals between consecutive heart beats [SDNN]: 78.1 [72.5-93.5] x 61.1 [56.4-75.7], p = 0.022) and greater autonomic balance (LF/HF: 0.96 [0.88-1.35] x 0.71 [0.56-0.93], p = 0.023), compared with the non-athletes, respectively. In addition, a moderate and positive relation was obtained between fat-free mass and the square root of the squared differences between consecutive heartbeat intervals (RMSSD: r = 0.526, p = 0.004 x r = 0.456, p = 0.038), (SDNN: r = 0.617, p = 0.001 x r = 0.571, p = 0.007) and low frequency (LFms(2): r = 0.517, p = 0.005 3 r = 0.600, p = 0.004) in the athletes and non-athletes, respectively, without a correlation between fat mass (FM). The conclusion is that young highly trained swimmers had lower FM, increased fat-free mass, and better HRV than young adult non-athletes and suggests that a lower quantity of FM and, especially, a greater fat-free mass (FFM) are linked to better autonomic modulation. Thus, this study could contribute to coaches and trainers establishing greater performance by better autonomic modulation and greater quantity of FFM.

Background: Duplex ultrasound scanning (DUS) is the method of choice for diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, only a few studies have performed prospective serial DUS after an acute episode of DVT to assess its evolution. This study aimed to report our experience using DUS combined with a thrombosis score (TS) and a newly proposed vein diameter variation index (VDVI) to evaluate the rate of resolution of DVT by assessing and quantifying the early stages of vein recanalization in proximal vein segments within 6 months after an episode of acute lower extremity DVT.Methods: Twelve patients with first episode of acute lower extremity DVT confirmed by DUS as occurring in <= 10 days after the onset of venous thrombosis symptoms were followed up prospectively for 6 months. TS and VDVI were calculated at 1, 3, and 6 months to assess vein recanalization. Intra-thrombus arteriovenous fistula formation was also investigated and related to the recanalization process. Results: Seven (58%) women were included, with a total cohort median age of 53.5 +/- 19 years. The left lower extremity was affected in 7 (58%) patients. DVT was diagnosed in 55 proximal vein segments. All patients had proximal DVT, with involvement of the external iliac, femoral, and popliteal veins. After 6 months, there was a significant decrease in TS and increase in VDVI (P < 0.001) in all proximal vein segments assessed, indicating thrombus regression. The more distal the DVT was, the faster was the VDVI increase, with most popliteal veins being recanalized at 3 months (P < 0.001). Intra-thrombus arteriovenous fistula was identified in 50% of patients at 1 month while on anticoagulation. Conclusions: The combined use of two different DUS-based assessment tools, TS and the proposed VDVI, provided an effective method to prospectively assess vein recanalization rates after an episode of acute lower extremity DVT in this series of patients and may allow a correct evaluation of DVT and its resolution or progression.

This study was aimed to test low doses of a GnRH agonist, deslorelin acetate (DA), for induction of multiple ovulations in mares and to determine its impact upon their reproductive efficiency. Seven mares aging from 8-20 years were used in three consecutive reproductive cycles. Mares were initially monitored by ultrasound irrespectively of cycle stage, inseminated and submitted to embryo collection (EC) (T1). Immediately after, mares received 7.5 mg dinoprost tromothamine (DT) and were monitored by ultrasound twice a day until larger follicle reached 23-25mm and the second >18mm (T2). At this time point, mares received 100 mu g DA and ovulation was induced with 1000 mu g DA and 1000IU hCG when largest follicle reached 33-35mm in diameter, followed by EC. Mares were further allocated to T3 when received 7.5 mg DT after EC on 12 and 100 mu g DA 48 h later. DA treatment was performed until dominant follicle reached 34 +/- 1 mm or 6 days of application. All EC were performed 8 days after ovulation. Mares with multiple ovulations in T1, T2 and T3 were 14.28% (1/7), 100.00% (7/7) and 0.00% (0/7), respectively, and averaged 0.43 +/- 0.53 in T1, 0.86 +/- 0.38 in T2 and 0.00 in T3 embryos per donor, respectively. Embryo recovery rate was 43.00% in T1, 85.71% in T2 and 0.00% T3. In conclusion, use of DA in mares with follicles larger than 25mm enhanced dominant and co-dominant follicle growth, that ultimately increased the incidence of multiple ovulations and embryo recovery rate.

This study evaluated the potential of congenital transmission in goats experimentally infected and reinfected with Toxoplasma gondii, in three gestational stages (initial, intermediate and final). Of the 25 non-pregnant females negative for T. gondii, 20 were orally inoculated with 2.5 x 103 T. gondii ME49 oocysts. Of these, 15 pregnant females chronically infected were reinoculated, via oral, with 2.5 x 103 T. gondii VEG oocysts. Five experimental groups were formed (n=5): I, II and III (reinoculations in the initial, intermediate and final gestational stage, respectively), IV (inoculation) and V (no inoculation). Clinical and serological exams (IgG IFAT [indirect immunofluorescence antibody test]) in different days of evaluation, and bioassay and PCR were performed in all goats. In the infected goats with T. gondii a peak of 40.2°C (IV) at nine, seroconversion (IgG≥64) at 21 and stabilization (IgG<1024) at 119 days postinoculation were observed. In the reinfected goats with T. gondii occurred an increase in IgG titers (≥1,024) at 28 (I), 7 (II) and 3 (III) days post-reinoculation. During kidding were observed only in the reinfected groups: dystocia, malformation body, stillbirth and weakness, and IgG anti-Toxoplasma were detected in all and in some offsprings of the reinfected and infected goats, respectively. Tissue parasitism by T. gondii was diagnosed by bioassay and PCR in infected and reinfected goats and in their offspring. The congenital toxoplasmosis was possible in goats chronically infected and reinfected with T. gondii. The primary infection with T. gondii did not protect the pregnant goats against congenital disease resulting from toxoplasmic reinfection, in different gestational stages (initial, intermediate and final).

This work presents a methodology to analyze transient stability (first oscillation) of electric energy systems, using a neural network based on ART architecture (adaptive resonance theory), named fuzzy ART-ARTMAP neural network for real time applications. The security margin is used as a stability analysis criterion, considering three-phase short circuit faults with a transmission line outage. The neural network operation consists of two fundamental phases: the training and the analysis. The training phase needs a great quantity of processing for the realization, while the analysis phase is effectuated almost without computation effort. This is, therefore the principal purpose to use neural networks for solving complex problems that need fast solutions, as the applications in real time. The ART neural networks have as primordial characteristics the plasticity and the stability, which are essential qualities to the training execution and to an efficient analysis. The fuzzy ART-ARTMAP neural network is proposed seeking a superior performance, in terms of precision and speed, when compared to conventional ARTMAP, and much more when compared to the neural networks that use the training by backpropagation algorithm, which is a benchmark in neural network area. Although they are no longer manufactured, the applicators of 90Sr +90Y acquired in the decades of 1990 are still in use, by having half-life of 28.5 years. These applicators have calibration certificate given by their manufacturers, where few have been recalibrated. Thus it becomes necessary to accomplish thorough dosimetry of these applicators. This paper presents a dosimetric analysis distribution radial dose profiles for emitted by an 90Sr+90Y betatherapy applicator, using the MCNP-4C code to simulate the distribution radial dose profiles and radiochromium films to get them experimentally . The results with the simulated values were compared with the results of experimental measurements, where both curves show similar behavior, which may validate the use of MCNP-4C and radiochromium films for this type of dosimetry
