Introduction: Scientific evidence indicates that neonatal exposure to ototoxic drugs cause hearing loss in newborns. Objective: To characterize the use of ototoxic antibiotics in newborns (NB), treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and evaluate possible hearing modifications. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional quantitative approach, using data from medical records of infants who were at some time in the NICU and used antibiotics, including ototoxic, from January to June 2004 as much as 2010, and the data were compared and analyzed. Parents/guardians of infants born in 2004 were contacted and applied a questionnaire containing questions about the children’s hearing. These children were submitted to audiological evaluation. Results: There was significant reduction in the time of use, the amount of antibiotics prescribed to newborns and Vancomycin prescription in 2010 compared to 2004. The hearing tests of 13 born in 2004 showed: sensorineural hearing loss in only 2 (one with moderate hearing loss and descending configuration in pure tone audiometry and the other with bilateral cochlear impairment); audiometric thresholds within the normal range in 11 patients, and the presence of otoacoustic emissions in 9. In Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) no changes were observed. Conclusion: The reduction in the time of use, the amount and types of antibiotics observed may be related to the adoption of a Protocol in 2008, by the service. In contrast, auditory alterations may be related to a neonatal exposure to antibiotics in 2004.

The mini-implant has become a device for anchorage quite widespread and current employee in Orthodontics. The effectiveness of mini-implant is mostly due for its stability primary, however is important to understand about factors that influence the stability. This article presents a review of literature in the database, and as a criterion for inclusion in articles published on the factors related to the stability of mini-implant carried out on humans and animals. The articles was selected according selection criteria related to stability, The factors of mini-implants stability have been described in the literature with scattered scientific information, most of them just as clinical observations. However, these factors of stability can be classified in relation to screw, professional and patient.

This clinical report describes an adult patient referred for orthodontic treatment with mini-implants as anchorage to correct the root angulation of maxillary lateral incisors. The purpose of this report was to demonstrate the versatility of mini-implants placed in a vertical direction in esthetic areas. During orthodontic treatment, some aspects must be observed to preserve the interim restoration against the occlusal loads to avoid screw fracture. A fixed appliance was placed to correct the position of the maxillary anterior teeth and to complete the treatment. Acceptable esthetics and function were achieved.

Brazil has the fourth largest horse herd in the world, this is due the recognition and appreciation that the different equestrian games are having within the country. Injuries of the tendon, especially in the digital flexor tendon, are the main cause of athletic life reduction among horses. The treatment of tendinitis in horses seeks full recovery of the damage tissue reestablishing the function previously lost, however conventional treatments have proven to be ineffective when considered the quality of the scar tissue and the rate of recurrence. Due to this, the use of adult stem cells to the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries of horses has been studied for some time. This method of treatment consists of aspiration of bone marrow or removal of subcutaneous fat tissue and implantation of these cells in the injured tissue. After obtaining the bone marrow the implantation can be performed with total bone marrow, with the mononuclear fraction of MSC or with cells cultured in vitro. From the fat tissue is used the stromal vascular fraction obtained by collagenase digestion, followed or not by cell culture. According to some studies, cell therapy with material obtained from bone marrow or adipose tissue has shown to be viable, given that these materials are abundant in repair components such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), growth factors and other components of the collagen matrix. Several studies using both types of cells have shown great potential and promising clinical results. However, knowledge of the biology and characterization of these cells remain largely unknown, and therefore is needed great care and caution when using stem cells for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in horses

The atlantoaxial subluxation or luxation is an instability of this articulation that produces excessive flexion of this joint causing the cranial aspect of the axis to rotate dorsally into the vertebral channel with subsequent spinal cord compression. This disorder is most commonly found in young small breed dogs. The diagnosis of this disease is done by survey radiographs, where there is a larger distance between the atlas dorsal arch and the axis spinal process characterize the atlantoaxial subluxation. Surgical stabilization is the treatment of choice and multiple implants show the best results to stabilize the atlantoaxial joint. The main complications are sudden death or implant failure. The sudden death happens because of cardiorespiratory arrest and it is most likely caused by brainstem iatrogenic trauma. However, a larger study comparing different surgical stabilization techniques should be performed to evaluate relative success rates in dogs that have the same initial neurologic status

The biological principles of osseointegration caused the rehabilitation treatment with osseointegrated implant become a safe, well alternative accepted by the dental community for the high success rate, allowing the preparation of functional and aesthetic prostheses in edentulous and partial patients. We passed the initial phase of functional vision for an aesthetic approach, too, depending on the demands of the patient and the quest for excellence by professionals. Over these last years, implant treatment has undergone many changes in surgical and prosthetic protocols. The less invasive surgical techniques and the development of restorative materials, especially ceramics allow the prosthetic rehabilitation of high functional quality and aesthetics. The installation of implants in sockets immediately after extraction of teeth involved by fracture, periodontal disease, endodontic lesions, is part of the arsenal of techniques for rehabilitating a number of advantages that we get to the outcome of multidisciplinary treatment. For this, we must consider several criteria in its planning as a fundamental unit, adjacent teeth, multiple losses, system, form and number of implants, type of retention of the prosthesis components, the patient expectation of the outcome perspective, gingival biotype, standard of ridge resorption, the smile line, etc. occlusal analysis. With the three-dimensional placement of the implant can immediately join the biological processes of repair of the socket, implant osseointegration, speeding treatment time. Much has been made by companies in the surface treatment of endosseous implants to be osseointegration shortened and restorative procedures started earlier, bringing benefits to the patient and professional. Among the main advantages we can emphasize the preservation of the structures adjacent to the teeth replaced, minor resorption of bone tissue involved... The objective of this in vitro study was quantify the micro strain development around the internal hexagon implants, varying the type of prosthetic coping. For This reason, three implants of internal hexagon were inserted into one polyurethane block in line placement. Microunit abutments were screwed onto the implants. Tangentially the implants were bonded the strain gauges, two to the center implant. Ten structures, each one containing three copings were cast in Co-Cr alloy, that were divided into groups in the first group, plastic copings were used, and in the second group machined copings were used. The superstructure’s occlusal screws were tightened onto Microunit abutments with 10 Ncm torque, the magnitude of micro strain was recorded. The mean values of each strain gauge of each plastic copings were 363,37 ± 237,66 and the machined copings were 338,12 ± 223,01. The data were analyzed statistically by t- Student test. No statistically significant difference was found between the prosthetic copings (p= 0,867). It was concluded that to internal hexagon implants in line placement, the type of copings presented similar magnitude of micro strain after prosthetic occlusal screw was tightened

According to the National Institute of Cancer – INCA, 466.730 new cancer cases will occur in Brazil in 2009. Prostate and Lung cancer in man are the most incident types (in exception of the non-melanoma cancer). The brachytherapy with 125-iodine sources is an important method of prostate cancer treatment. The implant with iodine-125 seeds uses aproximately 100 seeds that are imported impossibilitating the treatment in large scale. For this reason, a multidisciplinary group was created at the Energetic and Nuclear Research Institute – Radiation Technology Center (IPEN –CTR / SP) to develop a national 125-iodine source and established a facility for local production. The seeds manufacture in Brazil will diminish the cost of treatment and prostate brachytherapy will be offered to more patients. This work aim is to observe and discuss the methods used in seeds manufacture there are being developed in Brazil and to present an prostate cancer case folloied in A.C. Camargo Hospital. The 125-iodine is adsorbed in an silver wire, then deposited at titanium coat. The weld is made by an process of plasm sealing. The seeds goes through several test to guarantee that there is no leakage. The result is an high quality and cheaper product. The implant tecnique is an fast and save procedure. The medical physicst preplan the case to stipulate the quantity of seeds there will be used. At the dat of the implant the medical physicst replan the procedure due to changes of volume in the organ. That assure the correct dose distribution in the target. Besides, the 125-iodine low energy is absorbed at the volume of interrest saving sourronding healthy tissues such as the rectum and the urethra
