Although ceramics present high compressive strength, they are brittle materials due to their low tensile strength so they have lower capacity to absorb shocks. This study evaluated the fracture toughness of different ceramic systems, which refers to the ability of a friable material to absorb defformation energy. Three ceramic systems were investigated. Ten cylindrical samples (5,0mm x 3,0mm), were obtained from each ceramic material as follows: G1- 10 samples of Vitadur Alpha (Vita-Zahnfabrik); G2- 10 samples of IPS Empress2 (Ivoclar-Vivadent); G3- 10 samples of In-Ceram Alumina (Vita-Zahnfabrik). Fracture toughness values were collected upon indentation tests that were performed under a heavy load. A microhardness tester (Digital Microhardness Tester FM) utilized a 500gf load cell during 10seconds to perform four impressions on each sample. Statistically significant results were observed (ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests). In-Ceram Alumina presented the highest median toughness values (2,96N/m3/2), followed by Vitadur Alpha (2,08N/m3/2) and IPS Empress2 (1,05N/m3/2). It may be concluded that different ceramic systems present distinct fracture toughness values, thus In-Ceram is capable of absorbing superior stress when compared to Vitadur Alpha and IPS Empress2.

Introduction: Based on the importance of the integrity of the metal/ceramic interface, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the shear bond strength of the metal-ceramic union of two Co-Cr alloys (Wirobond C, Bego; Remanium 2000, Dentaurum) combined with Omega 900 ceramic (Vita Zahnfabrik). Material and Method: Eleven cylindrical matrixes were made for each alloy, and the metallic portion was obtained with the lost wax casting technique with standardized waxing of 4mm of height and of 4mm of diameter. The ceramic was applied according to the manufacturer's recommendations with the aid of a teflon matrix that allowed its dimension to be standardized in the same size as the metallic portion. The specimens were submitted to the shear bond test in an universal testing machine (EMIC), with the aid of a device developed for such intention, and constant speed of 0.5mm/min. Results and Conclusions: The mean resistance was 48.387MPa for Wirobond C alloy, with standard deviation of 17.718, and 55.956MPa for Remanium 2000, with standard deviation of 17.198. No statistically significant difference was observed between the shear strength of the two metal-ceramic alloys.

Em cativeiro, Pinguins-de-Magalhães, Spheniscus magellanicus (Forster, 1781) (Sphenisciformes, Aves) são descritos como sedentários, obesos, pouco interativos e apáticos, costumam apresentar pododermatite e baixo índice de reprodução. Atualmente, existem poucos estudos relacionados a pinguins de cativeiro, dificultando o trabalho de manejo e conservação. Diferentes parâmetros podem ser utilizados para avaliação do bem estar animal, dentre eles a diversidade comportamental e repertório típico da espécie. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar o orçamento temporal e o padrão de distribuição do comportamento de um grupo de seis animais ao longo do dia e em épocas do ano distintas, e relacionar os comportamentos aos indicadores do estado de saúde dos pinguins. Foram estudados animais residentes no Parque Escola SABINA, em Santo André, SP, nos meses de janeiro, março, maio e julho de 2014. O comportamento dos animais locais foi observado por dois dias nos seguintes horários: 8h-8h50min, 9h25- 10h15min, 10h50min-11h40, 12h20-13h10, 13h40-14h30, 15h05-15h55. As lesões de pododermatite foram classificadas seguindo o escore padronizado de 1 a 3 para a classificação de pododermatite nos pinguins. Foi observado que nenhum animal apresentou lesões avançadas de calosidades nas patas, porém quatro demonstraram evolução no bumblefoot. Os animais passaram mais tempo nos seguintes comportamentos: repouso em pé, repouso deitado, nadar, banho, arrumar penas. A duração dos comportamentos variou entre os meses: no mês de julho os pinguins passaram mais tempo nadando e banhando-se e houve uma tendência de redução do repouso. A distribuição dos comportamentos entre os períodos da manhã e da tarde foi distinta dependendo do mês. Em geral, os pinguins passaram mais tempo banhando-se e nadando pela manhã e em repouso à tarde. Introdução: o tratamento com implantes dentários para a reposição de dentes na região estética exige a utilização de materiais e técnicas que permitam o máximo de naturalidade entre a restauração, os dentes vizinhos e o tecido gengival. Dessa forma, torna-se necessário criar o correto perfil de emergência para o dente, assim como a utilização de materiais com alto potencial estético. Objetivo: o objetivo do presente trabalho foi ilustrar, através de um caso clínico, a utilização de uma técnica de moldagem para a correta cópia do perfil de emergência do dente e sua transferência para o modelo de trabalho, tornando possível a confecção de uma restauração totalmente cerâmica, perfeitamente integrada ao tecido gengival. Caso clínico: paciente de 30 anos, procurou o clínica de prótese dentária com desejo de melhorar a estética dos dentes. Após diagnóstico e planejamento, foram confeccionadas 2 coroas totalmente cerâmicas sobre os dentes 12 e 21, e confecção de 1 coroa cerâmica sobre um pilar de zircônia após o estabelecimento e registro do perfil de emergência do dente 11. Conclusão: após a conclusão do tratamento, observou-se naturalidade, estética e perfeita integração entre as restaurações, os dentes remanescentes e o tecido gengival.

The combination of several methods for solving aesthetics in a clinical case can be a complicating factor. The diagnosis and planning of the event held in conjunction with the dental technician expand the possibilities of success. The present case illustrates the aesthetic resolution through the association of implant- and tooth-supported prostheses using metal free ceramic systems. A 38-year old male patient presented with a complex smile. After diagnosis and treatment planning, two ceramic crowns were made, one on tooth 11 and one on the implant region 21, along with a laminated porcelain veneer on the region of 12. Aesthetic needs of the patient are predictable only with a sound diagnosis.

The evolution of techniques and materials applied to adhesive ceramic restorations resulted in the intensification of its use, proving to be an excellent method of aesthetic restoration. Some important features of this technique are its conservative preparation, which avoids an excessive loss of tooth structure and its high aesthetic value provided by the ceramic even when utilized under different color of dental substrates. The aim of this paper was to report a clinical case with full crowns, porcelain veneers and non-prep veneers, enhancing peculiarities related to the material used, tooth preparation techniques, cementing, indications and contraindications.

Patients with primary malignant brain tumor endure several motor and cognitive dysfunctions, demanding the presence of a caregiver even more because the time necessary for their assistance increases considerably. Usually this task is performed by a family relative, whose activities include taking care of the patient’s personal hygiene, escorting them to medical appointments, managing their money and performing their housework. All of this overwhelms the caregiver both physical and psychologically. This bibliographic research intends to analyze the role in which a caregiver plays in the quality of life of those kinds of patients, the complications of such task, the caregivers’ needs and the daily life of those terminal patients. It was used CAPES, PubMed and Google Academic databases for researching articles related to family caregivers who assisted adult patients with primary malignant brain tumor. The study concluded that being a caregiver of patients in such conditions harms one’s quality of life, with consequences such as stress, insomnia, financial problems and lack of social support. Theirs needs include: having someone to talk to about the matter, attending programs for reducing stress and increasing their knowledge about the disease. In advanced phases of the condition, the patient shows great mobility problems, aphasia and regular seizures, which end up overwhelming the caregiver. The level of quality of life found was above other types of cancer’s caregivers. Therefore, they represent a group with special needs, which should be especially handled by health professionals.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of two conditioning methods used to enhance the shear strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to porcelain surfaces. A total of 18 feldspathic specimens were used. The specimens were divided randomly into two groups (n = 9): group free silane, the porcelain specimens were etched with hidrofuoric acid 10% (Acid Gel-Maquira) for 4 minutes followed by adhesive-primer (Transbond XT) and the metallic brackets (Morelli Roth Light .022" x .030") were bonded with a light-cured microfilled resin (Transbond XT Light Cure Orthodontic Adhesive); group silane, the porcelain specimens were etched with hidrofuoric acid 10% (Acid Gel-Maquira) for 4 minutes followed by silane (Silano Ângelus) for 1 minute, adhesive-primer (Transbond XT) and the metallic brackets (Morelli Roth Light .022" x .030") were bonded with a light-cured microfilled resin (Transbond XT Light Cure Orthodontic Adhesive). All specimens were stored in solution of artificial saliva at ambient temperature for 24 hours. The debonding was done with shear strength through a universal testing machine (DL 500-Emic) calibrated with a fixed speed of 1mm/minute. Statical analysis was performed using the Student t test. The results indicated that in the free silane group the mean bond strength was 9,97 MPA, significantly lower than the silane group, that was 12,38 MPa (p < 0,05). The both groups were effective for bonding, although the silane group had the highest bond strength values.
