Objective: To identify associations between cytological criteria in fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens and histological subtypes of lobular breast carcinoma (classical and other types). Study Design: FNA cytology and mastectomy specimens from 72 cases of invasive lobular breast carcinoma were consecutively retrieved from the files of the Amaral de Carvalho Hospital, Jaú-São Paulo, Brazil. All cases were reviewed regarding five cytological criteria: cellularity, cellular cohesion, presence of inflammation, nucleoli and nuclear atypia. The χ2 test or Fisher's exact tests with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used. Results: The classical type showed lower initial cytological diagnosis of malignancy compared to the other variants (p = 0.017; odds ratio (OR) 0.26, 95% CI 0.89-0.80). Moderate/intense cellular cohesion (p = 0.011; OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.04-0.73) and mild atypia (p = 0.000; OR 16.15, 95% CI 3.20-81.48) were significantly associated with the classical type of lobular breast carcinoma, while the absence of inflammation (p = 0.082; OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.12-1.15) was marginally associated with the classical type. Conclusions: In cytology, the characterization of lobular carcinoma as malignant is difficult, especially the classical type. The association between cell cohesion and the classical type of lobular breast carcinoma may be one of the factors that complicate this diagnosis.

Background: More than half of women present nipple discharge during reproductive age. Case: This case is about a 36 years old woman with unilateral spontaneous hyaline nipple discharge associated with breast pain. The study of scintimammography was compatible with multifocal proliferative lesion in situ. It was performed cytological smear of nipple discharge. It was paucicellular smear represented by cluster of ductal cells in three-dimensional design with hyperchromatic nuclei in the presence of myoepithelial cells. Red cells and signs of necrosis were not observed. The diagnosis of in situ ductal carcinoma was confirmed in biopsy and mastectomy specimen through the expression of calponin in myoepithelial cells at immunohistochemistry. It is known that the cytological examination of nipple discharge has low sensitivity and specificity. However, it is an easy and inexpensive procedure. Suspicious or positive results, may be important for guidance workup of patients in order to perform earlier diagnosis of malignancy. Conclusion: this case demonstrates that in situ ductal carcinoma can be characterized by positive nipple discharge, and cytology sample is an important tool for the diagnosis of suspicion of malignancy and further diagnostic investigation.

The presence of increased volume in penis and prepuce of horses can be of neoplastic or non-neoplastic origin. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), papilloma, fibropapiloma, melanoma and sarcoidorigin. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), papilloma, fibropapilloma, melanoma and sarcoid are detached as neoplastic causes. The non-neoplastic causes can be parasitic as habronemiasis and pythiosis, or inflammation, resulting in the formation of exuberant granulation tissue. The penile disorders can be easily confused with each other because they have similar clinical signs. Among epithelial neoplasms affecting penis and prepuce, squamous cell carcinoma is the most common in horses. Thus, it was aimed to report a case of squamous cell carcinoma in a horse and describe the main differential diagnosis for this disease. The additional tests to obtain an accurate diagnosis and the institution of appropriate treatment are essential for the satisfactory repair of penile neoplasms in this species.

Survivin protein is an inhibitor of apoptosis that plays a role in cell cycle control and the mechanism of carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to verify the clinic pathological correlation of survivin expression in exfoliative cytology of chronic smokers, mucosa of patients with intra-oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and also from mucosa after surgical removal of OSCC. Patients were divided in 03 groups: Group 1: 26 patients who smoked more than 20 cigarettes/day/10years with no history of oral malignant neoplasm, or any clinical sign visible at examination. Group 2: 26 patients who had OSCC and Group 3: 22 patients surgically treated of OSCC for at least 01 month. Immunohistochemistry of the smears from each group was analyzed by light microscopy to extent and intensity of survivin positive cells. Survivin expression was observed in 100% of cases in group 1, 88.5% in group 2 and 100% in group 3. Groups 1 and 3 showed cytoplasmic expression in 100% of the cases, while group 2 showed it in 87.5%. Cytoplasmic and nuclear expression was 7.69% observed only in group 2. The results were association with clinicopathological data by Fisher's exact test and it was significant to smoke cessation in group 2 on intensity (p=0.015) of survivin expression. The intensity of survivin expression was related to smoking cessation in group 2. Smoking history (pack/years) showed no influence survivin expression
