The use of plants in treatments of diseases or even in the cure of them is a high difused popular tradition, and several works talk about the therapeutic and pharmacological properties of garlic in the reduction of hyperlipidaemias. The objective of the present work was to investigate the influence of garlic (Allium sativum) aqueous extract treatment on the serum cholesterol of rabbits in experimental hypercholesterolemia. The animals were divided in G1 (control group) and G2 (group with garlic treatment). The experiment was developed in 3 phases: during the 1st phase, all the animals received regular diet for evaluation of basal cholesterol; in the 2nd phase all the animals received supplemented diet until the end of the experiment, in order to develop hypercholesterolemia and in the 3rd phase, the animals of G2 received the garlic treatment. The cholesterol registered on the 1st phase was 39,94 ± 9,57mg/dL. On the 2nd phase, there was an increase on the serum cholesterol level in both groups – higher than 100mg/dL. Concerning the treatment, garlic didn’t reduce the serum cholesterol in rabbits

This paper reports the data on the cuiabana sausage historical aspect, and from the study performed on its technical/sensory characteristics. Four formulations of cuiabana-type sausage were prepared, varying the basic raw material (bovine, chicken and swine meats). For processing these sausages, the raw meats (beef, chicken and pork) were cut into cubes and together with the other ingredients (garlic, cheese, pepper and chives) they were weighed and homogenized. The resulting mixture was refrigerated for 24 hours for intensifying the flavor. Thereafter, it was stuffed into natural casings. These prepared samples were characterized on the physical-chemical profile and on the shelf life under refrigeration for over a seven day-storage in order to assess the microbiological contamination (total coliforms and fecal thermotolerant bacteria), sulphite-reducing clostridium, Salmonella spp., coagulase-positive Staphylococcus), and pH. The sensory evaluation and statistics analysis were carried out on the different types of laboratory- processed cuiabana sausage. Introducing over time changes in the cuiabana sausages formulation are positive factors; therefore, variations in the formulations it is feasible to get a better final product than that original one, and it might be resulted from the market demand.

A new selective sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was developed for the determination of hexazinone (HXZ) in environmental samples. MIPs were synthesized using a non-covalent approach, and selection of the monomers employed in the polymerization reaction was carried out by molecular modeling. Three functional monomers with high (2-vinylpyridine (MP17)) and intermediate (methacrylic acid (MP12) and acrylamide (MP5)) energies of binding to the template (HXZ) were selected for preparation of the MIPs, in order to conduct comparative studies and validate the theoretical data. For sensor construction, carbon pastes were modified with each MIP or NIP (non-imprinted polymer), and HXZ determination was performed using differential pulse adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (DPAdCSV). All parameters affecting the sensor response were optimized. In HCl at pH 2.5, the sensor prepared with MP17 (5% w/w in the paste) showed a dynamic linear range between 1.9 × 10−11 and 1.1 × 10−10 mol L−1, and a detection limit of 2.6 × 10−12 mol L−1, under the following conditions: accumulation time of 200 s at a potential of −0.5V, scan rate of 50 mVs−1, pulse amplitude of 60 mV, and pulse width of 50 ms. The sensor was selective in the presence of other similar compounds, and was successfully applied to the analysis of HXZ in river water samples.

A novel nanostructured composite, azide copper octa (3-aminopropyl)octasilsesquioxane (ASCA) was incorporated into a graphite paste electrode and the electrochemical studies were conducted with cyclic voltammetry. The cyclic voltammogram of the modified graphite paste electrode with ASCA (GPE-ASCA), showed one redox couple with formal potential (E ) = 0.30 V and an irreversible process at 1.1 V (vs Ag/AgCl; NaCl 1.0 mol L-1 ; v = 20 mV s-1 ). The redox couple with (E ) = 0.30V presents an electrocatalytic response for determination of ascorbic acid. The modified electrode gives a linear range from 1.010-4 – 1.010-3 mol L-1 (r = 0.998) for the determination of ascorbic acid with detection limit of 6.910-5 mol L-1 and standard deviation of 2.3% for n = 3 . The amperometric sensitivity was 122.1 mA/mol L-1 for ascorbic acid. The application this electrode was tested and ascorbic acid in three commercial pharmaceutical product (Cebion, Cewin and Redoxon) have been determined.

The aim of this study was to investigate the enamel wear permanent teeth after plastic stick or low speed rubber cup microabrasion. Ten permanent molars were selected to evaluate enamel wear which were sectioned into mesial and distal halves. Each half of the molars was randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups (n = 10) according to the enamel microabrasion technique: plastic stick (GE) or rubber cup (GT). In both the groups, the enamel was submitted to 10 applications of an abrasive paste comprised of 35% phosphoric acid and pumice powder. The paste was applied for 20 seconds under a pressure of 30 g using the instrument defined for each group (plastic stick or rubber cup). The specimens were evaluated under a stereomicroscope connected to a computer. The enamel wear no was statistically different between GE and GT, which presented a mean wear of 304.74 µm (21.20%) and 338.35 µm (22.75%). In conclusion, superficial enamel wear was seen for both the groups, independent of the technique used for the accomplishment of the microabrasion.

Purpose: The objective of this article is to describe a method to construct an intraoralacrylic device that permits a reline material to be added to the inner surface of thepalatal plate.Materials and Methods: Fifteen 60-day-old adult female rats (Rattus NorvegicusAlbinus Wistar), weighing 150 to 250 g were used for this study and allocated to threegroups (n = 5): G1, animals wearing a heat-polymerized acrylic resin palatal plate(Lucitone 550) for 14 days; G2, animals wearing a heat-polymerized acrylic resinpalatal plate (Lucitone 550) relined with Tokuyama Rebase II for 14 days; and G3,animals maintained under the same conditions as the experimental groups, withoutwearing palatal plates for 14 days. The manipulation of the animals followed theguidelines of the Brazilian College of Animal Experimentation, under the approval ofthe animal ethics committee of the State University of Ponta Grossa. The palatal platescovered the whole palate, were fixed in the molar region with light-cured resin, andwere kept there for 14 days. The animals received a paste diet and water ad libitum. Before and after the trial period, the rats were weighed individually on a precisionscale. Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way analysis of variance (α =0.05) test for comparison of the animals’ weight (g) at time 0 and after 14 days ofusing the palatal plate. Results: No statistical differences were observed regarding the weight of the animalsamong the experimental groups in the study. Conclusions: The individual master impressions, the molar teeth coverage, and themethod of cementation with nonadhesive composite resin provided good stability forthe palatal plate showed in this study, not disturbing the eating habits and nutritionof the animals. This model seems reproducible, offering adequate histopathologicalevaluation. Differences in tissue morphology exist between the animals that used thepalatal plate and the animals that did not use this device. Use of these palatal platescould clarify how prostheses bring changes in the palatal mucosa of users.

This study evaluated the effect of the addition of 5% calcium chlorite (CaCl2) on pH values in calcium hydroxide pastes (CH), with or without 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) used as vehicle, in several periods analysis. Polyethylene tubes were filled with CH mixed with water (G1), 2% CHX solution (G2) or gel (G3), or CHX solution or gel with 5% CaCl2 (G4 and G5, respectively). All tubes were individually immersed in distilled water. After 12, 24 hours, 7, 14 and 28 days, pH value was evaluated directly in water which the tubes were stored. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05). In 24 hs and 14 days, pH values were similar to all groups. In 12 hs, the G1 presented lower pH value than other groups except to G4 (p < 0.05), and G4 presented lower pH value than G5 (p < 0.05). In 7 days, G1 presented lower pH value than G4 and G5 (p < 0.05). In 28 days, G1 and G5 presented lower pH values than G2 and G4 (p < 0.05) and among other groups there are no statistical differences (p > 0.05). The pH values increased in long-term analysis to all CH pastes. The association of 5% calcium chloride with 2% CHX solution as vehicle of CH paste provided a pH value increase in relation to CH mixed with distilled water. The CHX gel interfered negatively on pH value in comparison to CHX solution when mixed with CaCl2.

Root canal and furcal perforations are causes of endodontic therapy failure and different materials that stimulate tissue mineralization have been proposed for perforation treatment. In the first case, a patient presented tooth 46 with unsatisfactory endodontic treatment and a periapical radiographic lesion. A radiolucent area compatible with a perforating internal resorption cavity was found in the mesial root. The granulation tissue was removed, and root canals were prepared. The intracanal medication was composed of calcium hydroxide and the perforation cavity was filled with Portland cement. The 11-year followup showed radiographic repair of the tissue adjacent to the perforation and absence of clinical signs and symptoms or periapical lesion. In the second case, a patient presented with edema on the buccal surface of tooth 46. The examination showed a radiolucent area in the furcation region compatible with an iatrogenic perforation cavity. The mesial root canals were calcified, and only the distal root canal was prepared. The cavity was filled with a calcium hydroxide-based paste and the distal root canal was obturated. In sequence, the perforation cavity was filled with Portland cement. The 9-year followup showed the tooth in masticatory function with radiographic and clinical aspects compatible with normality.

In this work evaluated the content of vitamin C and total carotenoid in tomatoes fresh and dehydrated for conserve, with posterior immersion in sauce, verifying its sensorial acceptability. Dehydration was performed in dryer with airflow at 70 °C to obtain a product with final moisture of 45%. Determinations were carried out ascorbic acid, soluble solids, acidity, sugars and carotenoid before and after the dehydration process. The dehydrated tomatoes had been immersed in three types of sauces (pepper sauce, oregano with parrot leaves sauce and garlic sauce) per 25 days. After this period, the dry tomatoes in conserve had been submitted to the sensorial analysis in the pate form, applying themselves preference test. The results had been showed that retention of vitamin C and total carotenoid in the dehydrated product showed retention of 14.0% and 44.3%, respectively, in tomatoes after the dehydration process.
