O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho dos sistemas sensoriais e do controle postural de idosos diabéticos e investigar a relação entre as alterações destes sistemas e do controle postural desta população. Participaram deste estudo dez idosos diabéticos ativos (62±4,4 anos) (GDA), 10 diabéticos sedentários (65,5±7,4 anos) (GDS) e 10 idosos saudáveis ativos (63,2±4.5anos) (GCA) foram submetidos a avaliações sensoriais e de controle postural. As avaliações sensoriais foram compostas por avaliação somatossensorial (sensibilidade cutânea e sensibilidade ao movimento passivo). Para avaliar o controle postural foram analisadas medidas de oscilação corporal durante manutenção da postura ereta (em tandem stance e bipodal). Os resultados indicaram pior desempenho do GDS na avaliação do movimento passivo e de controle postural. Nas avaliações de controle postural, o GDS apresentou uma maior amplitude média de oscilação (AMO) (cm) nas condições de manutenção da postura ereta na posição tandem stance na direção médio-lateral. No teste de sensibilidade ao movimento passivo, o GDS precisou, em média, de um maior deslocamento angular para perceber o movimento das articulações do joelho e tornozelo. Estes resultados indicam, portanto, que as alterações estruturais e fisiológicas decorrentes do diabetes, resultam em piora do desempenho dos sistemas sensoriais e de controle postural. Além disso, a maior deterioração do sistema proprioceptivo em idosos diabéticos pode interferir negativamente no desempenho de controle postural dos mesmos. Desta forma, a atividade física minimiza a perda sensorial e ainda ajuda no controle postural dos diabéticos.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a associação entre música e atividade física no que diz respeito ao bem-estar psicológico e o estado de ânimo de participantes de esportes coletivos. Confirmam os estudos, que os benefícios da prática de atividade física juntamente com a música são muitos e inegáveis. Os participantes de esporte coletivo, por estarem sempre em contato com muitas outras pessoas e sempre sofrendo muitas influências de todos os lados (meio e pessoal), foram os escolhidos para o estudo. A literatura disponível e estudada apóia a idéia de que uma pessoa que esteja na presença de uma música de seu gosto, se estruturando de forma correta, pode se sentir mais motivada e psicologicamente preparada. A diferenciação dada nesse estudo foi à idéia de colocar a música “preferida” e “nãopreferida”, assim conseguimos avaliar a influência positiva e também a negativa dada pela música. Por meio de questionários passados pré e pós a atividade física, fizemos a análise, e a conclusão foi o que os estudos já diziam, de que existe uma clara influência da música tanto nos aspectos do humor, quanto nos psicológicos, positivamente e também negativamente. Considerando tudo isso, a idéia de existirem mais trabalhos para o aprimoramento de treinamentos com a presença da música ideal é o foco do estudo.

In this work was developed a program capable of performing automatic counting of vehicles on roads. The problem of counting vehicles is using expensive techniques for its realization, techniques which often involve manual counting or degradation of the pavement. The main motivation for this work was the importance that the vehicle counting represents to the Traffic Engineer, being essential to analyze the performance of the roads, allowing to measure the need for installation of traffic lights, roundabouts, access ways, among other means capable of ensuring a continuous flow and safe for vehicles. The main objective of this work was to apply a statistical segmentation technique recently developed, based on a nonparametric linear regression model, to solve the segmentation problem of the program counter. The development program was based on the creation of three major modules, one for the segmentation, another for the tracking and another for the recognition. For the development of the segmentation module, it was applied a statistical technique combined with the segmentation by background difference, in order to optimize the process. The tracking module was developed based on the use of Kalman filters and application of simple concepts of analytical geometry. To develop the recognition module, it was used Fourier descriptors and a neural network multilayer perceptron, trained by backpropagation. Besides the development of the modules, it was also developed a control logic capable of performing the interconnection among the modules, mainly based on a data structure called state. The analysis of the results was applied to the program counter and its component modules, and the individual analysis served as a means to establish the par ameter values of techniques used. The find result was positive, since the statistical segmentation technique proved to be very useful and the developed program was able to count the vehicles belonging to the three goal..

Accidents represent a major public health problem as they are frequent, preventable, and account for high morbidity and mortality rates. Children are the most vulnerable to accidents due to their inherent characteristics, and as a result of their physical, sensorial, psychomotor and cognitive limitations, which will only develop with time. Watchfulness and careful attention are of paramount importance, especially as children develop locomotor skills that are accompanied by curiosity about their surroundings. Child accidents, particularly those that could have been avoided, are the accidents most commonly seen in emergency and urgency departments. Urgency and emergency departments are the greatest allies in the attention to pediatric accidents as they offer adequate, immediate and specific high complexity care to patients at risk, viewing their vital stabilization. Investigating the causes and consequences of this insult is essential to establish a diagnosis and to contribute for the adoption of measures of prevention, control, and assistance. To identify the epidemiologic characteristics of the accidents involving children that received care at the pediatric emergency department of Botucatu Medical School Hospital and required hospitalization. This quantitative, retrospective, descriptiveanalytic epidemiologic study included all children aged 0-14 years who had had an accident and were seen at the Pediatric Emergency Department of Botucatu Medical School Hospital of São Paulo State University/UNESP between January 1/2008 and December 31/2009. A total of 227 medical charts were reviewed and 178 (78.4%) patients were included in this study. Of these, 116 (65.1%) were males and 62 (34.8%) were females. Children aged 5 - 9 years (38.9%) were the most affected, followed by those aged 10 - 14 years (37.5%). Fractures occurred in 138 (77.5%) of the cases, followed by foreign bodies... As abelhas Apis mellifera africanizadas são consideradas importantes agentes polinizadores que estão freqüentemente expostos à ação tóxica de inseticidas aplicados em cultivos. O imidaclopride é um inseticida sistêmico do grupo dos neonicotinóides e atua como agonista da acetilcolina nas sinapses do sistema nervoso central. Em abelhas foi verificado, através do método de resposta de extensão da probóscide (REP), que doses subletais de imidaclopride provocam deficiência no aprendizado olfatório e prejudicam a memória. A proteína Fos, expressa em neurônios, tem sua transcrição alterada por diversos estímulos como estresse, lesões, exposição a toxinas ou a predadores. Dessa forma, este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos neurotóxicos do inseticida imidaclopride, em operárias de Apis mellifera africanizadas, através da análise da expressão de Fos. Abelhas recém-emergidas e campeiras foram tratadas com 10, 20, 40 e 80 ng/abelha de imidaclopride e seus cérebros dissecados 15 minutos, 30 minutos, 1 hora e 4 horas após a ingestão do composto. Houve uma marcação positiva para Fos nos ocelos e na região dos olhos, principalmente na lâmina e na retina. Tal resultado era esperado, uma vez que o as abelhas foram expostas a luminosidade, durante a realização dos ensaios. Os lobos antenais são constituídos por prolongamentos de células sensoriais das antenas e pelos neurônios motores e os corpos pedunculados são tidos como os centros de processamento dos estímulos sensoriais recebidos pelos olhos e pelas antenas, assim, esperava-se que houvesse marcação positiva nestas regiões. Porém isto não foi observado no presente trabalho. The teaching of hearing physiology requires an knowledge integration of Human Anatomy, Biophysics, more precisely Bioacoustics and Bioelectrogenesis, as well as Neurophysiology. Students present difficulty to build knowledge about functional mechanisms of sound conduction and sensory transduction, especially if the elements are not visible forms, as the middle and inner ear structures. To make the teaching about hearing physiology and sensory perception easier, was produced a set of didactical materials about the subject. At first, a resin model that faithfully describes the anatomical relationship of the ossicles with the tympanic membrane was developed. Subsequently, a second model that, besides illustrates the mechanism of acoustic impedance overcoming, also reveals how acoustic sensorial transduction occurs in inner ear, was designed and produced. In the third didactical model, are visualized, through students interaction, areas of the cerebral cortex that interpret the different sensory modalities. In addition, were created three educational videos about hearing problems and a site on Human Hearing Physiology, available on Institute of Biosciences website. The results of this course conclusion monograph are presented in the form of articles that were submitted to Journal Physics in the School and the Journal of the Nucleus of Teaching

This paper reports the data on the cuiabana sausage historical aspect, and from the study performed on its technical/sensory characteristics. Four formulations of cuiabana-type sausage were prepared, varying the basic raw material (bovine, chicken and swine meats). For processing these sausages, the raw meats (beef, chicken and pork) were cut into cubes and together with the other ingredients (garlic, cheese, pepper and chives) they were weighed and homogenized. The resulting mixture was refrigerated for 24 hours for intensifying the flavor. Thereafter, it was stuffed into natural casings. These prepared samples were characterized on the physical-chemical profile and on the shelf life under refrigeration for over a seven day-storage in order to assess the microbiological contamination (total coliforms and fecal thermotolerant bacteria), sulphite-reducing clostridium, Salmonella spp., coagulase-positive Staphylococcus), and pH. The sensory evaluation and statistics analysis were carried out on the different types of laboratory- processed cuiabana sausage. Introducing over time changes in the cuiabana sausages formulation are positive factors; therefore, variations in the formulations it is feasible to get a better final product than that original one, and it might be resulted from the market demand.

Cheeses are known to be sources of calcium, phosphorus and protein, important nutrients for a suitable nutrition. However, certain cheeses imply the ingestion of large amounts of fats, which can cause the development of coronary heart and carcinogenic diseases. Although consumers are aware of the necessity of reducing the fats intake, they are still not pleased with the quality of light cheeses available on the market, because the partial or total fat removal provides some undesirable changes, especially regarding to the product texture and flavor. In order to offer products nutritionally adequate and palatable, alternatives have been developed to improve the characteristics of light cheeses. Such alternatives include the use of fat substitutes, those additives that improve the functional and sensory characteristics of cheeses with reduced fat. Fat substitutes composed of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, or a combination of them, help the retention of moisture and eliminate the undesirable characteristics of fat reduced-cheeses. In this context, this review aims at reporting the innovations and trends on the use of fat substitutes to produce light cheeses.

The consumption of fat related to the incidence of diseases has motivated the development of food with less or even no fat. However, fat is important for the full functioning of the human body and sensory characteristics of food. Therefore, making food with little or no fat and at the same time maintaining the desired quality is a challenge for the industry. Fat substitutes were created to achieve this objective. Fat substitutes can be more effective in their applications when mixtures of different types of them are used. The number and variety of these ingredients are still growing, expanding options of choice when a fat substitute is required in a certain type of food. Considering the importance of fat substitutes nowadays, this paper presents an overview of functions and implications of fats in the human body and food, the terminology used to refer to fat substitutes, the categories of different types of fat substitutes available in the market and their applications in dairy products.

Brazilian wines are appreciated by consumers for having fruity odor and taste which are typical from Vitis labrusca cultivars. The rusticity of these cultivars, the winemaking and the physicochemical properties are some of the key factors to obtain a quality beverage. In this context, the aim of this article was to analyze the quality of three white wines from wineries located in northwest region of São Paulo state by determining physicochemical properties and sensory profile. Data were analyzed by statistical tests and by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). It was possible to observe statistical differences (P<0,05) in most physicochemical properties. Furthermore, the PCA showed that the attributes body and color significantly explained the variance of the first and second component, respectively, higlighting the Vitis vinifera wine. Thus the connection between the physicochemical and sensory properties of white wines was important for characterization of these beverages produced in the northwest of São Paulo.

Brazilian red wines are very appreciated by consumers from tropical regions, because they typically have aromatic and fruity taste. Thus, the aim of this article is to verify the quality of red wines from wineries located in Northwest region of São Paulo, based on the relationship between physicochemical properties and sensory attributes. Three red wines from this region was evaluated by sensory and analytical methods and it was possible to observe significant differences in the fixed acidity, alcoholic content, total phenolic content and total dry extract. Multidimensional Scaling showed relationship between total phenolic content and astringency, total dry extract and body and the relationship of volatile acidity in the assessment of odor samples. It was possible to see the physicochemical influence in sensory evaluation, indicating the importance of the chemical profile in the elucidation of possible sensory alterations in red wines.

Objectives: to identify the demographic profile and frequency of anemia and hemoglobinopathies, as a basis for future implementation of actions aimed at pregnant women in the public health domain. Method: this is a cross-sectional study developed with pregnant women attended in a university hospital at Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Blood samples were collected for the erythrogram analysis for detection of anemia and selective and specific tests for abnormal hemoglobin. The patients regarded as indigenous and mentally ill, as well as inmates, were excluded from the research, as they represent a vulnerable population which needs a cohort different from that of the sample. For data collection, a particular questionnaire was used. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), under the Protocol 873/2006. Results: of the 215 pregnant women under study, 20% were adolescents; 36.3% had incomplete primary education; 53.0% were non-Caucasian; 43.3% were from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil; and 21.1% were of European descent. 17.7% had some type of anemia and, in the evaluation of hemoglobinopathies, 4.7% of patients were detected with some abnormal hemoglobin, with the following frequencies: 3.3% with HbAS; 0.9% with HbAC; and 0.5% with intermediate β-thalassemia. Conclusion: the frequencies of anemia and hemoglobinopathy found in these pregnant women showed the importance of early diagnosis, revealing indicators able to provide a basis for preventive and assistance actions for adequate clinical monitoring, reducing maternal and neonatal morbimortality in the public health services.
