The obesity along with overweight has been considered one of the most serious public health problems in the world, especially because they are the main risk factors for many chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and some types of tumors, which are associated with high mortality rates. The use of functional foods and appropriate diets to promote health has grown as a prevention mechanism. Previous studies suggested Bidens pilosa L. for the treatment of disorders associated with obesity, with one important attraction of this regiment is perceived as safer and more effective health than the traditional anorexigen .The aim of this project is to standardize a new model of obesity induced by hipercaloric diet in Swiss mice, and also to evaluate the effect of Bidens pilosa L. extract in the reduction of food intake, weight and toxicity. After induction of obesity, the animals were treated for 21 days with the extract. Then the animals were killed and samples were collected for further analysis. Preliminary, the effect of this product has being evaluated on the daily food intake and body weight. In dose of 100mg/Kg, there were no significant changes in food intake and body weight. Thus, this concentration of Bidens pilosa was not effective in reducing body weight of obese animals, and did not reduce food intake

Adequate testosterone levels are necessary for the development, growth and maintenance of the male reproductive system. Testosterone deficiency is common in men with diabetes in whom it may contribute to impaired performance, with consequent reduction of the activity of the androgen regulated organs, such as the prostate. However, little attention has been given to the plasma dihydrotestosterone (DHT) level, the most potent androgen, nor to the expression of the androgen receptor (AR), insulin-like growth factor type I (IGF-1) and receptor (IGF-1R) in target tissues. Here, we investigated the effect of type I diabetes mellitus on DHT plasma levels and on prostate AR, IGF-1 and IGF-1R expression during rat pubertal growth. Diabetes was induced in prepubertal male rats through administration of streptozotocin (STZ; 40 mg/kg). Diabetic, diabetic treated with insulin, and age-matched control animals were killed by overdoses of pentobarbital. The ventral prostatic lobe (VP) was dissected, weighed and processed for immunohistochemistry for AR, IGF-1 e IGF-1R; plasma T and DHT levels were also determined. Hyperglycemia at puberty reduced VP weight gain to about 50% and plasma T level to about 80% of the control levels. In contrast there were no changes in plasma DHT levels. Insulin replacement restored the VP weight gain, but not the plasma T levels, which remained 90% below the ones of controls. Immunohistochemistry showed that AR, IGF-1 and IGF-1R expression in the prostate epithelial cells did not change with hyperglycemia or insulin replacement. Thus, the AR expression in the prostate epithelial cells appears to be regulated by DHT, and to a minor extent it also controls glandular growth

The use of plants in treatments of diseases or even in the cure of them is a high difused popular tradition, and several works talk about the therapeutic and pharmacological properties of garlic in the reduction of hyperlipidaemias. The objective of the present work was to investigate the influence of garlic (Allium sativum) aqueous extract treatment on the serum cholesterol of rabbits in experimental hypercholesterolemia. The animals were divided in G1 (control group) and G2 (group with garlic treatment). The experiment was developed in 3 phases: during the 1st phase, all the animals received regular diet for evaluation of basal cholesterol; in the 2nd phase all the animals received supplemented diet until the end of the experiment, in order to develop hypercholesterolemia and in the 3rd phase, the animals of G2 received the garlic treatment. The cholesterol registered on the 1st phase was 39,94 ± 9,57mg/dL. On the 2nd phase, there was an increase on the serum cholesterol level in both groups – higher than 100mg/dL. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of chlorhexidine gel 2% as auxiliary chemical substance on the biomechanical preparation (BMP) and medication intracanal (ICM) on C. albicans, E. faecalis, E. coli and their endotoxin in root canals. We used 48 single-rooted human teeth divided into four groups according to dressing ICM: 1) Ca(OH)2 + pyrogen-free saline solution; 2) 2% chlorhexidine gel (CLX); 3) Ca(OH)2 + CLX, and; 4) pyrogen-free saline solution (control group). Were collected the contents of root canals to confirm the presence of microorganisms (confirmation), immediately after instrumentation (1st collection), after 7 days of the BMP (2nd collection), after 14 days of the action of ICM (3rd Collection) and 7 days after removal of the ICM (4 th collection). Were performed: the evaluation of antimicrobial activity and the content analysis of endotoxins for all sampling tests. The results were statistically analyzed using Kruskall-Wallis and Dunn tests with a significance of 5%. It was found that the CLX as auxiliary chemical substance has significantly reduced microorganisms confirmation collection when compared. In relation to the neutralization of endotoxin, it was found that the 1st and 2nd collections presented a decrease of 92.03% and 98.10% in mean percentage respectively, when compared to the confirmation collection. In the 3rd and 4th samplings, the Ca (OH)2 + CLX group showed the best results. It was concluded that the BMP and the ICM were able to eliminate the tested microrganisms, however, they were not able to completely eliminate endotoxins root canal

Prophylactic or therapeutic treatments administered with medicinal plants and natural products are used in popular medicine of diverse people since prehistoric times to the present days. Species with medicinal properties are increasingly studied in an attempt to understand their possible effects on organisms and their functioning. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the mushroom Agaricus blazei (aqueous extract) in rabbits subjected to experimental hypercholesterolemia. The animals were divided into two groups (control and treated with the mushroom) whose experimental protocol was divided into three phases: Phase 1, the animals were fed a normal diet to evaluate the physiological level of cholesterol; phase 2, the animals were fed a supplemented diet to induce hypercholesterolemia and in phase 3, the animals of control group continued to take high-cholesterol diet and the animals of treated group high-cholesterol diet including treatment with the mushroom. Weekly, after fasting of 14 hours, blood samples were collected from the animals and its plasma was stored for later measurement of plasmatic cholesterol. In the first phase, the cholesterol level was, on average, 31,30  7,34 mgdL-1. In the second phase, there was a significant increase (p<0,05) in cholesterol level of both groups. During the last phase of the experiment, the mushrooms didn’t cause reduction in plasmatic cholesterol of treated rabbits, however, prevent disease progression, maintaining the cholesterol level established at the beginning of treatment, whereas, in the control group, total serum cholesterol increased significantly at this stage

As abelhas Apis mellifera africanizadas são consideradas importantes agentes polinizadores que estão freqüentemente expostos à ação tóxica de inseticidas aplicados em cultivos. O imidaclopride é um inseticida sistêmico do grupo dos neonicotinóides e atua como agonista da acetilcolina nas sinapses do sistema nervoso central. Em abelhas foi verificado, através do método de resposta de extensão da probóscide (REP), que doses subletais de imidaclopride provocam deficiência no aprendizado olfatório e prejudicam a memória. A proteína Fos, expressa em neurônios, tem sua transcrição alterada por diversos estímulos como estresse, lesões, exposição a toxinas ou a predadores. Dessa forma, este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos neurotóxicos do inseticida imidaclopride, em operárias de Apis mellifera africanizadas, através da análise da expressão de Fos. Abelhas recém-emergidas e campeiras foram tratadas com 10, 20, 40 e 80 ng/abelha de imidaclopride e seus cérebros dissecados 15 minutos, 30 minutos, 1 hora e 4 horas após a ingestão do composto. Houve uma marcação positiva para Fos nos ocelos e na região dos olhos, principalmente na lâmina e na retina. Tal resultado era esperado, uma vez que o as abelhas foram expostas a luminosidade, durante a realização dos ensaios. Os lobos antenais são constituídos por prolongamentos de células sensoriais das antenas e pelos neurônios motores e os corpos pedunculados são tidos como os centros de processamento dos estímulos sensoriais recebidos pelos olhos e pelas antenas, assim, esperava-se que houvesse marcação positiva nestas regiões. Porém isto não foi observado no presente trabalho. The Psychology of Morality is an area that has to be strengthened in the academic environment for social, political and scientific. The research of Jean Piaget (1932) on the development of moral judgments are the main sources for this area of knowledge, followed by studies of Lawrence Kohlberg (1981), Jose Maria Puig (1998) and others. This project intends to investigate and analyze the conception of the ethical training of graduate students of Pedagogy, Unesp, Campus Bauru, in order to see how these conceive their ethical, what importance they give to the subject and how to relate such training to the work that will develop with their students. Some research has shown a total lack of respect for the theories and concepts related to the issue by presenting a framework of moral indifference since graduation, space in which there is discussion about major educational theories. Through the proposed research is to analyze whether such a deficiency exists and educate future educators of the fundamental importance of its role in moral education and ethics of their students

The inclusive classroom, focused on individual differences, it is becoming more frequent and constant within mainstream schools. For this practice to be successful, there must be a different work by teachers, methodology, teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials. Thus, the teacher who works directly with students with disabilities, find factors that facilitate and hinder this practice, making it essential to study of such factors, so we can understand and contribute to assessment and implementation of strategies to minimize the need that this pedagogical practice imposes. This varying needs, from the simple as using different materials to work in the classroom to the broader and more complex, as the reform in schools. Thus, these aimed to survey and analyze the conceptions of teachers on facilitating and hindering aspects of the schooling of students with disabilities in the regular classroom as well as check their training needs. The method used was ruled a quantitative approach to data collection was through a closed questionnaire containing 35 questions with Likert scale. The study included 904 teachers who underwent a course of Improvement in Inclusive Educational Practices, the same was applied when students entered the course, but had not had contact with the course content. The result showed that most teachers agree that all students with disabilities have behavior problem, dividing the assertion that the disabled student disrupts the class of the colleague who has a disability. Apresentamos um projeto que objetiva investigar concepções e práticas de alunos de um curso de Pedagogia em relação à natureza das ciências e ao ensino de ciências nos anos iniciais, constituindo subsídios para construção de uma proposta formativa na licenciatura. São utilizados questionários semi-estruturados e análise das produções de estágio, procurando identificar como tais concepções refletem nas propostas educativas elaboradas pelos licenciandos. A partir da análise, será elaborada, implementada e avaliada uma proposta formativa na disciplina “Conteúdos, Metodologias e Práticas em Ensino de Ciências”, contribuindo para clarificação das concepções alternativas e reflexão crítica sobre a natureza do conhecimento científico e sobre ensinar ciências nos anos iniciais da escolarização.

Inclusive education is a proposal in which all people are accepted and recognized by their individual characteristics. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the concept of inclusive education and its relation within the democratic management on the early childhood education. Participated in these study educators of two schools in a municipal system school, the data were collected by means of interviews and were analyzed using qualitative approach. Educators participated in the study of two schools in a municipal school, and the data collected by means of interviews and organizes collective actions designed. The survey results suggest that is necessary that the management team is informed and understands the importance of articulating different social segments that can assist special needs of students with disabilities in their needs, promoting thus its development.

The application of ultrasonic waves during the initial setting of the glass ionomer cements (GIC) has demonstrated increase of the cure speed, reduction of air bubbles and improves in some mechanical properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the ultrasound on the microhardness and the superficial roughness in two GICs (FUJI IX GP (GC Corporation) and Ketac Molar EasyMix (3M ESPE)). Forty specimens were confectioned, twenty for evaluation of the superficial roughness and twenty for evaluation of the microhardness. Half of them received for thirty seconds the ultrasonic waves application. The readings of the roughness had been carried before and after the toothbrushing test. The twenty remaining specimens had been polished with abrasive sandpapers of decreasing granulations and submitted to the hardness test. The results, analyzed for the variance analysis (ANOVA) (p<0,05), had demonstrated increase of the hardness for all the groups with the application of ultrasonic waves, being bigger for the Ketac Molar EasyMix. The ultrasound application also caused significant reduction of the superficial roughness for the Ketac Molar EasyMix. After the toothbrushing test, this last property increased for all the materials. It could be concluded that the application of ultrasonic waves was effective in increasing the superficial hardness of the materials and that it improved the roughness of the Ketac Molar EasyMix before the toothbrushing test.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of the mouthwashes 0.12% chlorhexidine, Listerine, and 0.5% and 2% Melaleuca Alternifolia oil against the salivary levels of Streptococcus mutans and total microorganisms. Methods: This study was double-blind controlled and paired clinical assay. Twenty-six volunteers aged 21 to 35 years old were enrolled. At baseline, 1 mL of unstimulated saliva was collected from each subject, 1 and 15 min after mouthrinsing with the following solutions: sterile distilled water, 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate, Listerine (©Johnson & Johnson do Brasil), 0.5% and 2% concentrations of Melaleuca Alternifolia (Sigma-Aldrich). The volunteers used all the evaluated mouthrinses with a 15-day interval between the solutions. Immediately after rinsing, saliva was collected and serial dilutions were performed, followed by plating in blood agar culture medium for growth of total microorganisms and SB-20 (Sucrose-Bacitracin agar) for growth of S. mutans, and incubation at 37 °C for 48 h in microaerophilia. After incubation, the number of colonies was counted and expressed as colony forming units (UFC/mL). Results: Chlorhexidine showed antimicrobial action by reducing total microorganisms and S. mutans, while the action of 0.5% Melaleuca Alternifolia was similar to that of distilled water. Listerine and 2% Melaleuca Alternifolia oil reduced total microbial counts by 11% and 9% respectively, and S. mutans by 20% and 11%. Conclusion: A single rinse with 0.12% chlorhexidine is effective in reducing the levels of total microorganisms and S. mutans present in saliva. Under the same testing conditions, Listerine and 0.5% and 2% Melaleuca Alternifolia oil presented lower efficacy than chlorhexidine.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the learning of Senior Citizens after a face-to-face course with the goal of teaching them how to use the internet. The study population was composed of people (n=18), of both genders, aged 50 years or over, from the open university for Senior Citizens UNATI (“Universidade Aberta da Terceira Idade” in Portuguese) at Araraquara. Two hour classes weekly were taught in the computer laboratory - LDI in Portuguese located in the School of Dentistry in Araraquara. The course program content covered the use of e-mail and researches in sites. In order to evaluate the learning acquired, a self-evaluation questionnaire was applied in twice (before and after the course), which enabled the development of students concerning their knowledge and skill in the topics approached in classes. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The average performance of participants was calculated per point and interval of confidence of 95% (IC95%) in the beginning and in the end of the course. Comparison between the averages was performed by using the paired Student’s-t test. The level of significance adopted was 5%. It was observed that the students’ learning about computer use improved significantly after the course (Student’s-t test: -5.360, p<0.001, p2=0.628, =0,999), however, 72.2% of them reported that they did not know how to attach a file to a message to be sent by e-mail, as well as having no or little skill to perform this activity. It was concluded that the evaluated course improved the participants knowledge and skills in computer use.
