The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of statins associated with physical exercise (PE) in liver cells in dyslipidemic rats through cariometry. The animals were divided into six groups: animals subjected to a hypercholesterolemic diet (HD), simvastatin, with (G1) and without (G2) physical exercise (PE); HD submitted (G3) or not (G4) to PE, and commercial food diet (F) with (G5) and without (G6) PE. Histological analysis of the liver was performed by staining the slides with hematoxylin and eosin. The cariometric study included measuring the major and minor diameters of the hepatocytes nuclei. The Shapiro-Wilk test was also performed. To determine the differences among the groups, the Kruskal-Wallis Test with Dunn's post-test were conducted. The significance level was set at 5%. No difference was found in the hepatocytes nuclei between G5 and G6. When these groups were related with G3 and G4, reduced nuclei were observed. There was no difference between G1 and G6. The comparison between G6 and G2 showed that the nuclei in G2 were smaller. No difference was detected between G5 and G1. Changes were observed in the nuclei shape in G2 in comparison to G1. Considering G2 and G3, a decrease in the size of nuclei was observed in G3. On the other hand, G2 showed changes in shape in the comparative analysis with G4. The size and shape of G1 nuclei were larger than G3 as well as changes in shape were observed when compared to G4. G4 showed smaller nuclei than G3. Therefore, F, associated or not with the practice of PE, does not alter the size and shape of the hepatocytes nuclei; HD combined with sedentarism influences changes in the morphometric parameters of hepatocytes; and the association of simvastatin and PE seems to protect the hepatocytes nuclei with regard to HD.

Objetivo: O presente trabalho, dividido em três estudos, teve como objetivo geral identificar e quantificar a liberação de componentes e avaliar a citotoxicidade e a biocompatibilidade de cimentos de ionômero de vidro (CIVs). Método: Para o estudo 1, extratos dos CIVs Vitrebond (VB), Fuji Lining LC (FL), Vitremer (VM), Fuji II LC (FII), Ketac Fil Plus (KF) e Ketac Molar Easymix (KM) foram obtidos pela imersão de corpos-de-prova em meio de cultura celular (DMEM). Esses extratos (n=9 por grupo) foram analisados por eletrodo específico quanto à presença de flúor e por espectrometria de absorção atômica quanto à presença de alumínio e zinco. HEMA e iodobenzeno foram identificados por CG/EM (n=6). Para o estudo 2, células MDPC-23 foram colocadas em contato com os extratos dos CIVs por 24 horas. Em seguida, foram avaliadas a atividade da desidrogenase succínica (SDH) (n=8), a produção de proteína total (PT) (n=8), a atividade da fosfatase alcalina (FAL) (n=8) e a morfologia celular (n=2). Para o estudo 3, tubos de polietileno (n=24 por grupo) foram preenchidos com os CIVs e implantados no tecido subcutâneo de 42 ratos. Como grupo controle foi utilizada a guta-percha. Após 7 ou 15 dias de pós-operatório, metade dos espécimes de cada grupo e período (n=6) foi preparada para análise histológica, e os demais (n=6) para análise da expressão de genes que codificam para IL-1? e TNF-?. Resultados: Os extratos de todos os CIVs apresentaram uma concentração de flúor significativamente maior do que o meio de cultura DMEM (controle), tendo o VB liberado maior quantidade, estatisticamente significante, do que os demais CIVs. O VB foi, também, o único material que liberou quantidades relativamente altas de alumínio e de zinco. BackgroundMelanoma of the skin is characterised by a high metastatic potential, but reports of metastasis to the tongue are rare. We report a case of skin melanoma with metastasis to the lymph nodes, tongue and brain.ObjectivesThis report highlights the clinical and histological features of oral metastatic melanoma.Case reportA 72-year-old man was seen with a nodule on the tongue. The differential diagnosis included salivary gland tumour, lymphoma and metastatic melanoma. His medical history revealed treatment for melanoma in the periumbilical region and micrometastases in the inguinal lymph nodes. An incisional biopsy was obtained and histological analysis showed the presence of a solid, epithelioid malignant tumour of monotonous appearance infiltrating the skeletal musculature. Immunohistochemistry showed reactivity of neoplastic cells to anti-HMB45, anti-melan A and anti-S100 antibodies and negativity for anti-PAN cytokeratin, confirming the diagnosis of metastatic melanoma.ConclusionThe present findings highlight the importance of a complete medical evaluation of the patient by anamnesis to identify possible oral repercussions of primary diseases in other organs and/or systems.

Autogenous bone grafting is the gold-standard technique for bone augmentation procedures prior to implant placement. If the amount of available intraoral donor bone is insufficient, it is necessary to harvest bone graft from extraoral sites, such as calvaria. Although this technique is well established, only a few case reports show the histological analysis of the grafted bone at the moment of implant placement. This article reports the case of a 48-year-old female patient with a critical atrophic maxillary ridge reconstructed using autogenous calvarial bone graft prior to implant placement, with clinical and histological evaluation. Bone was collected under general anesthesia from the parietal bone. The outer cortical originated the bone blocks, and the medullar bone layer between was collected to be used in the sinus augmentation procedure, together with 5 of the bone blocks triturated. Six months after bone augmentation, 8 implants were placed in the grafted area and 2 biopsies were retrieved (anterior and the posterior regions), allowing the visualization of the bone-remodeling process in the grafted areas. The patient had a stable recovery. Our results showed that although necrotic bone could still be seen in the outer layer of the grafted area, the interface between this necrotic bone and the already remodeled bone was consistent with biocompatibility. Two-year radiographic evaluation showed success of the grafts and the implants in supporting an esthetic and functionally stable prosthesis. Summarizing, calvarial bone grafts are a viable alternative for the attainment of adequate bone volume prior to implant placement.
