Many in vivo studies have stated that the response of the dentin/pulp complex does not depend on the dental material used as the liner or pulp-capping agent. However, several in vitro studies have reported the metabolic cytotoxic effects of resin components applied to fibroblast and odontoblast cell lines. The aim of this study was to evaluate the human pulp response following direct pulp capping with current bonding agents and calcium hydroxide (CH). Sound premolars scheduled for orthodontic extraction had their pulp tissue mechanically exposed. After hemorrhage control and total acid conditioning, the experimental bonding agents, including All Bond 2, Scotchbond MP-Plus, Clearfil Liner Bond 2, and Prime & Bond 2.1 were applied on the pulp exposure site. CH saline paste was used as the control pulp-capping agent. All cavities were restored with Z-100 resin composite according to the manufacturer's instructions. Following extractions, the teeth were processed for microscopic evaluation. In the short term, the bonding agents elicited a moderate inflammatory pulp response with associated dilated and congested blood vessels adjacent to the pulp exposure site. A mild inflammatory pulp response was observed when Clearfil Liner Bond 2 or CH was applied on the pulp exposures. With time, macrophages and giant cells engulfing globules and components of all experimental bonding agents displaced into the pulp space were seen. This chronic inflammatory response did not allow complete pulp repair, which interfered with the dentin bridge formation. Pulp exposures capped with CH exhibited an initial organization of elongated pulp cells underneath the coagulation necrosis. CH stimulated early pulp repair and dentin bridging that extended into the longest period. The bonding agents evaluated in the present study cannot be recommended for pulp therapy on sound human teeth.

Metallographic studies carried out for Tytin-Plus and Dispersalloy amalgams show a porous multiphase material, whose surface phases are: gamma-(Ag3Sn), gamma(1)-(Ag2Hg3), eta'-(Cu6Sn5) and epsilon-(Cu3Sn). Additionally, Dispersalloy is present in the Ag-Cu eutectic. The application of surface analysis by SEM reveal a heterogeneous distribution of the above mentioned phases. Microstructures consisting of colonies or clusters were not observed. The corrosion testing of these materials was done in 0.9% NaCl aerated solution at 25 degrees C using potentiodynamic polarization curves and ac impedance measurements. The corrosion process in these multiphase systems can be interpreted as the sum of more than one electrodissolution process and the posterior formation of corrosion films. on each electrode, the corrosion film is formed by different mechanisms. This article discusses the development of a test bench and a methodology for the study of composite resin abrasive wear. To evaluate the operation of the test bench and to compare the proposed methodology with other existing ones, a study was made of the five composites most commonly used by dentists. The one-way ANOVA method and the Tukey test were used to statistically analyze the results by multiple comparisons of the groups of resins tested. Using the proposed methodology, these resins were classified in an increasing order of abrasive wear strength, as follows: Charisma (the lowest abrasive wear strength), Tetric, TPH, Herculite and Z-100 (the highest abrasive wear strength) (P < 0.05). In comparison to other methodologies, the results of the proposed methodology presented the lowest coefficient of variation. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A quantitative study was made about the effects caused by ionizing irradiation on materials used for dental restoration (amalgams, compound resins and compomere), aiming to alleviate in bearers of head and neck cancer, the possible harmful effects of radiotherapy perceived when the repaired teething is within the radiation field. Research also encourages further studies for new alternative materials to be used in dental repair of patients submitted to radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Test samples were submitted to a gamma radiation beam coming from a cobalt-therapy source and analyzed according to the X-ray fluorescence technique, comparing the chemical composition of the samples before and after irradiation. Radiation detectors such as an ionization chamber and a Geiger-Muller were used to measure the rate of residual dose. Gamma spectrometry with Nal detectors was also performed on the same samples. Results showed that there was no significant change in the chemical composition and that at post-irradiation, samples did not exhibit radiation emission, that is to say they had not become radioactive.

The ferroelectric properties and leakage current mechanisms of preferred oriented Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 (BLT) thin films deposited on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 by the polymeric precursor method were investigated. These films showed excellent ferroelectric properties in terms of large remnant polarization (2P(r)) of 47.6 mu C/cm(2) and (2E(c)) of 55 kV/cm, fatigue-free characteristics up to 10(10) switching cycles, and a current density of 0.7 mu A/cm(2) at 10 kV/cm. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope investigations indicate that the deposited films exhibit a dense, well-crystallized microstructure having random orientations and with a rather smooth surface morphology. The improved ferroelectric and leakage current characteristics can be ascribed to the platelike grains of the BLT films, which make the domain walls easier to be switched under external field.
