Visible frequency upconversion emission through resonant energy-transfer involving neodymium and praseodymium ions in PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass excited by a semiconductor laser at 8 10 nm is investigated. Luminescence emission centered around 485, 530, 610, and 645 nm, which correspond to the P-3(0) -> H-3(4), P-3(1) + I-1(6) -> H-3(5), P-3(0) -> H-3(6) and P-1(0) -> F-3(2) transitions of praseodymium ions, respectively, are observed. The upconversion excitation of the Pr3+ ions excited-state emitting levels was accomplished by means of an ion-pair interaction involving ground-state absorption, multiphonon relaxation, and excited-state absorption of pump photons at 8 10 nm by the Nd3+ (I-4(9/2) -> H-2(9/2), F-4(5/2); F-4(3/2) -> P-2(1/2)) and direct energy-transfer to Pr3+ ((4)G(11/2) + K-2(11/2), H-3(4) -> I-4(9/2), P-3(1) + I-1(6)). The dependence of the upconversion emission intensity upon the excitation power, and neodymium concentration are also examined. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

70SiO(2)-30HfO(2) mol% planar waveguides, doped with Er3+ with concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 2 mol% were prepared by sol-gel route, using dip-coating deposition on vitreous-SiO2 substrates. Infrared-to-visible upconversion emission, upon excitation at 980 nm, has been observed for all the samples. The upconversion results in green, red and blue emissions. The investigation of the upconversion dynamic as a function of the Er3+ concentration and excitation power, show that processes such as excited state absorption and energy transfer upconversion are effective. Cooperative energy transfer upconversion luminescence is investigated in Tb(3+)/Yb(3+)-codoped PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic and its precursor glass under resonant and off resonance infrared excitation. Bright UV-visible emission signals around 384, 415, 438 nm, and 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm are identified as due to the (5)D(3)((5)G(6))->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4) and (5)D(4)->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4,3) transitions, respectively, and readily observed. The results indicate that cooperative energy transfer between ytterbium and terbium. ions followed by excited state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms involved. Comparison of the upconversion process in a glass-ceramic sample and its glassy precursor revealed that the former present much higher upconversion efficiency. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, temperature, and doping content is also examined.

Energy-transfer excited upconversion luminescence in Ho3+/Yb3+- and Tb3+/Yb3+ -codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass and glass-ceramic under infrared excitation is investigated. In Ho3+/Yb3+-codoped samples, green (545 nm), red (652 nm), and near-infrared (754 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the S-5(2) (F-5(4)) -> I-5(8), F-5(5) -> I-5(8), and S-5(2)(F-5(4)) -> I-5(7) transitions, respectively, was observed. Blue (490 nm) emission assigned to the F-5(2,3) -> I-5(8) transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the D-5(3)((5)G(6)) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicated that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we report on visible upconversion emission in Er 3+-, and Ho3+-doped PbGeO3-PbF 2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics under 980 nm infrared excitation. In erbium-doped vitroceramic samples, blue(410 ran), green(530, and 550 nm) and red(660 nm) emission signals were generated, which were identified as due to the 2H9/2, 2H 11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 transitions to the 4I15/2 ground-state, respectively. Intense red(650 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the 5F5 - 5I8 transition and very small blue(490 nm) and green(540 nm) signals assigned to the 5F 2,3 - 5I8 and 4S2, 5F4 - 5I8 transitions, respectively, were observed in the holmium-doped samples. The 540 nm is the dominant upconversion signal in Ho3+-doped vitroceramics under 850 nm excitation. The dependence of the upconversion processes upon pump power and doping concentration are also investigated, and the main routes for the upconversion excitation processes are also identified. The comparison of the upconversion process in transparent glass ceramics and the precursor glass was also examined and the results revealed that the former present higher upconversion efficiencies.

Blue, green, red, and near-infrared upconversion luminescence in the wavelength region of 480 - 740 nm in Pr3+/Yb3+-codoped lead-cadmium-germanate glass under 980 nm diode laser excitation, is presented. Upconversion emission peaks around 485, 530, 610, 645, and 725 nm which were ascribed to the 3P0 - 3HJ (J=4, 5, and 6), and 3P0 - 3FJ (J=2, and 3,4), transitions, respectively, were observed. The population of the praseodymium upper 3P0 emitting level was accomplished through a combination of ground-state absorption of Yb3+ ions at the 2F7/2, energy-transfer Yb3+(2F 5/2) Pr3+(3H4), and excited-state absorption of Pr3+ ions provoking the 1G4 - 3P0 transition. The dependence of the upconversion luminescence upon the Yb3+-concentration and diode laser power, is also examined, in order to subsidize the proposed upconversion excitation mechanism.

In this report we investigate the optical properties and energy-transfer upconversion luminescence of Ho3+- and Tb3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass-ceramic under infrared excitation. In Ho3+/Yb 3+-codoped sample, green(545 nm), red(652 nm), and near-infrared(754 nm) upconversion luminescence corresponding to the 4S 2(5F4) → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, and 4S2(5F4) → 5I 7, respectively, was readly observed. Blue(490 nm) signals assigned to the 5F2,3 → 5I8 transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+ system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D3(5G6) → 7FJ(J=6,5,4) and 5D4→ 7FJ(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicate that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. Changing the sample's temperature from 200 K to 535 K, we observed 670-fold enhancement of a phonon-assisted upconversion emission at ≈754 nm obtained from a Nd3+-doped tellurite glass excited by 5 ns laser pulses at 805 nm. A rate-equation model, including the relevant energy levels and temperature dependent transition rates, is proposed to describe the process. The results fit well with the data when one considers the nonradiative transitions contributing for the 754 nm luminescence are promoted by an effective phonon mode with energy of 700 cm-1. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

IR-visible upconversion fluorescence spectroscopy and thermal effects in pr(3+)/Yb3+-codoped Ga2O3:La2S3 chalcogenide glasses excited at 1.064 mum is reported. Intense visible upconversion emission in the wavelength region of 480-680 nm peaked around 500, 550, 620 and 660 nm is observed. Upconversion excitation of the Pr3+ excited-state visible emitting levels is achieved by st combination of phonon-assisted absorption, energy-transfer and phonon-assisted excited-state absorption processes. A threefold upconversion emission enhancement induced by thermal effects when the codoped sample was heated in the temperature range of 20-200 degreesC is demonstrated. The thermal-induced enhancement is attributed to a multiphonon-assisted anti-Stokes process which takes place in the excitation of the ytterbium and excited-state absorption of the praseodymium. The thermal effect is modelled by conventional rate equations considering temperature-dependent effective absorption cross-sections for the F-2(7/2)-F-2(5/2) ytterbium transition and (1)G(4)-P-3(0) praseadymium excited-state absorption, and it is shown to agree very well with experimental results. Frequency upconversion in singly Pr3+-doped samples pumped at 836 nm and 1.064 mum in a two-beam configuration is also examined.

In this paper we investigate the energy transfer processes in TM3+/Er3+ doped telluride glass pumped at the commercial diode laser pump wavelength similar to 800 nm. Tailoring the rare-earths content in the glass matrix, seven main energy transfer channels within the doping range considered were identified, A 6-fold enhancement of the Er3+ visible frequency upconversion fluorescence at similar to 660 nm is observed due to the inclusion of Tm3+ ions. This is evidence of the relevant contribution of the route Er-1(I-4(11/2)) + Er-2(I-4(13/2)) -> Er-1(I-4(15/2)) + Er-2(F-4(9/2)) to the process. Energy migration among pumped I-4(9/2) level reducing the efficiency of the upconversion emission rate (H-3(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2)) is observed for Er3+ above 1.5 wt%. The rate equations regarding the observed energy transfer routes are determined and a qualitative analysis of the observed processes is reported. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The efficiency of energy transfer (ET) between Pr3+ ions in a fluoroindate glass is determined. ET rates, WET, were determined for dilute samples and the results show a dependence of WET on the Pr3+ concentration. ET processes which contribute to resonance fluorescence and frequency upconversion emission were studied. The origin of the interaction energy among the Pr3+ ions was determined to be dipole - dipole. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Tungstate fluorophosphate glasses of good optical quality were synthesized by fusion of the components and casting under air atmosphere. The absorption spectra from near-infrared to visible were obtained and the Judd-Ofelt parameters determined from the absorption bands. Transition probabilities, excited state lifetimes and transition branching ratios, were, determined from the measurements. Pumping with a 354.7 nm beam from a pulsed laser. resulted in emission at 450 nm. due to transition D-1(2)-->F-3(4) in Tm3+ ions and a broadband emission centered at approximate to 550 nm attributed to the glass matrix. When pumping at 650 nm, two emission bands at 450 nm (D-1(2)-->F-3(4)) and at 790 nm (H-3(4)-->H-3(6)) were observed. Excitation spectra were also obtained in order to understand the origin of both emissions. Theoretical and experimental lifetimes were determined and,the results were explained in terms of multiphonon relaxation. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Optical spectroscopic properties of Tm3+-doped 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) glass are reported. The absorption spectra were obtained and radiative parameters were determined using the Judd-Ofelt theory. Characteristics of excited states were studied in two sets of experiments. Excitation at 360 nm originates a relatively narrow band emission at 450 nm attributed to transition D-1(2)-->F-3(4) of the Tm3+ ion with photon energy larger than the band-gap energy of the glass matrix. Excitation at 655 nm originates a frequency upconverted emission at 450 nm (D-1(2)-->F-3(4)) and emission at 790 nm (H-3(4)-->H-3(6)). The radiative lifetimes of levels D-1(2) and H-3(4) were measured and the differences between their experimental values and the theoretical predictions are understood as due to the contribution of energy transfer among Tm3+ ions.
