The present study aimed to identify common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars less susceptible to Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood) in different growing seasons, to evaluate whether climatic conditions influence plant resistance to C. phaseoli infestation, and to investigate the preferred plant part for insect feeding. Eighteen common bean cultivars were evaluated in the winter season, and 19 cultivars were assessed in the rainy and dry seasons, under field conditions in the municipality of Jaboticabal, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Infestation of C. phaseoli nymphs in the upper and lower parts of the beans plants was recorded at weekly intervals from 25 days after plant emergence (DAE) to 60 DAE. In the winter season, the cultivars 'IAC Galante,' 'IAC Centauro,' 'IAC Carioca Eté,' and 'IAC Formoso' had significantly lower number of thrips than the cultivar 'IAC Diplomata.' In the rainy season, the cultivars 'IAC Harmonia' and 'IPR Siriri' had the lowest thrips infestation, differing from the cultivars 'BRS Pontal' and 'IAC Una.' The bean cultivars were equally susceptible to C. phaseoli in the dry season. The results suggest that C. phaseoli nymphs prefer to infest leaves of the lower part of bean plants, like most generalist herbivorous insects. In the winter and dry seasons, the highest thrips infestation was observed at 60 DAE, while in the rainy season, it was recorded from 32 to 46 DAE. Overall, C. phaseoli infestation on bean cultivars was not influenced by either temperature, relative humidity, or rainfall.

O tripes Frankliniella schultzei Trybom (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) é um dos mais importantes vetores de tomato spotted wilt tospovirus (TSWV) na cultura do tomate no Brasil. Dois métodos de aplicação do inseticida thiamethoxam foram comparados no controle de tripes em tomate. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com sete tratamentos e quatro repetições. Utilizou-se um pulverizador costal manual com lança simples provida de ponta de pulverização com jato cônico vazio JD 14-2 ou modificada, com aplicador tipo esguicho, em substituição à ponta de pulverização. Dosagens de 150 e 200 g i.a. ha-1 foram usadas em única aplicação com esguicho e 50 g i.a. ha-1 em pulverizações semanais, iniciadas aos 48 dias após a semeadura. A eficiência do inseticida em teste foi comparada com diafenthiuron (400 g i.a. ha-1), profenofos + cypermethrin (320+32 g i.a. ha-1, respectivamente) e methamidophos (60 g i.a. 100 L-1 de água), aplicados em pulverização. Não houve diferença estatística entre os métodos de aplicação e doses com thiamethoxam no controle de F. schultzei aos 24 dias após a aplicação, sendo vantajosa a realização de uma única aplicação das maiores dosagens de thiamethoxam com esguicho em comparação às aplicações semanais da menor dosagem em pulverização. A eficiência de controle do tripes com o inseticida thiamethoxam variou de 93 a 95%, nos diferentes métodos e dosagens em teste. Diafenthiuron e profenofos + cypermethrin apresentaram eficiência menor (78 e 88%, respectivamente), porém foram superiores às obtidas com methamidophos (71%). Os produtos e doses utilizados não causaram fitotoxicidade às plantas de tomate.

The gall-forming thrips Gynaikothrips ficorum Marchal (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) is recorded in all regions where its host plant, Ficus microcarpa (Marchal) (Moraceae), has been cultivated as an urban and interior landscape plant species, including potted plants and bonsai. Similarly, the thrips predator Montandoniola confusa Streito & Matocq (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) has generally followed the prey distribution. The gall induced by thrips degrades the plant foliage, and the thrips themselves can be annoying for people both outdoors and indoors. The galls, however, create a microcosm with all developmental stages of the thrips and its predator. In this study we present the first records of M. confusa in South America, document the species' widespread concomitant occurrence across Brazil, and report our studies of three aspects of M. confusa predation upon the eggs, larvae/prepupae, and adults of G. ficorum thrips: (i) functional response of the predator adult female as a function of different densities of thrips eggs, larvae/prepupae and adults separately: (ii) predation on eggs by adult M. confusa with adult thrips present in the gall; and (iii) adult M. confusa prey preferences when all thrips stages occurred simultaneously in the gall. For all three thrips life stages tested, the predator exhibited a type II functional response. Despite the availability of different life stages in the gall, M. confusa adults are capable of preying upon all life stages of G. ficorum, predation was preferentially on thrips eggs, with an estimated similar to 10-fold greater predation on eggs compared to larvae/prepupae and adult thrips. Egg predation was unaffected by the presence of defensive adult thrips in the gall under low densities (<30 eggs/gall) but when egg densities were greater than 30 eggs/gall, it was reduced when adult thrips were present. The objective of this experiments was evaluate the control of Bemisia tabaci and Thrips tabaci, through the use of plant oils associated or not to insecticide in bean plants, besides verifying the consequences on yield. The experiment was carried out in the period of rainy seasons, by utilizing Carioca variety. The statistical design was the randomized blocks, by employing a 6x2 factorial scheme ( plant oil versus insecticide), totalizing 12 treatments and four replications. It was concluded thet application of plant oils without insecticide can be utilized on the control of the B. tabaci biotipo B, since their population and the symptoms of golden mosaic was similar to the treatment plant oils plus insecticide; among the plant oils Agrex (R) plant oil promoted a higher control of white fly. For T. tabaci the application of plant oil associated to insecticide provide with a smaller population index when compared to the treatments without this association. The yield was not affected by the population of B. tabaci biotipo B and T. tabaci when plant oils were utilized, associated or not to the insecticide.

From field observations on Drimys brasiliensis, principally in the Botucatu region of São Paulo State, Brazil, new data on the reproductive biology, the rhythm of growth, and the development of lateral cymose inflorescences, flowers and fruits are presented. Pollination accelerates the rate of flower-development for about 4-6 days. Pollination experiments show that D. brasiliensis is not self-sterile; because of mechanical devices the sticky pollen grains do not normally come into contact with the stigmata unless an animal pollen vector is involved. The pollinators are diurnal Coleoptera, Diptera and Thysanoptera which eat from the pollen, lick from the stigmatic exudates and (in case of the flies) probably also from the staminal glands. Fruit- and seedeaters are birds which seem to be the main dispersal agents. Establishment of new individuals normally is through seedlings, but also by vegetative propagation through plagiotropous branches which may root and separate from the mother plant. The morphological, developmental and reproductive aspects in D. brasiliensis are discussed in a wider context, compared with data from other Magnoliidae, and related to aspects of early Angiosperm evolution. © 1980 Springer-Verlag.

Diagnostic insect damage to cocoa tree leaves and fruits were compared in situations with and without the presence of the little fire ants, Wasmannia auropunctata and the closely related and sympatric W. cf rochai. No significant differences in thrips, lepidopteran, or chrysomelid beetle damage to fruits, or to young and old leaves, were associated with these ants. However, significant increases of pseudococcids Planococcus citrii, associated with areas dominated by W. auropunctata, and to a lesser degree with W. cf rochai, were present. W. auropunctata has been reported to be a canopy mosaic dominant in cocoa farms, but the lack of reduced herbivore incidences and its lack of spatial permanence do not support favoring its populations for the management of phytophagous insect control.
