C-13 exchange solid-state NMR methods were used to study two families of siloxane/poly-(ethylene glycol) hybrid materials: Types I and II, where the polymer chains interact with the inorganic phase through physical (hydrogen bonds or van der Waals forces) or chemical (covalent bonds) interactions, respectively. These methods were employed to analyze the effects of the interactions between the organic and inorganic phases on the polymer dynamics in the milliseconds to seconds time scale, which occurs at temperatures below the motional narrowing of the NMR line width and around the polymer glass transition. Motional heterogeneities associated with these interactions and evidence of both small and large amplitude motions were directly observed for both types of hybrids. The results revealed that the hindrance to the slow molecular motions of the polymer chains due to the siloxane structures depends on the chain length and the nature of the interaction between the organic and inorganic phases.

The effect of lithium salt doping on the structure and ionic conduction properties of silica-polyethyleneglycol composites is reported. These materials, so called ormolytes (organically modified electrolytes), were obtained by the sol-gel process. They have chemical stability due to the covalent bonds between the inorganic (silica) and organic (polymer) phase. The structure of these hybrid materials was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as a function of lithium concentration [O]/[Li] (O being the oxygens of the ether type). The spectra have a well-defined peak attributed to the existence of a liquid-like spatial correlation of silica clusters. The ionic conductivity was studied by AC impedance spectroscopy and is maximum for [O]/[Li] = 15. This result is consistent with SAXS and thermo-mechanical analysis measurements and is due to the formation of cross-linking between the polymer chains for the larger lithium concentrations. These materials are solid, transparent, flexible and have an ionic conductivity up to 10(-4) S/cm. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
NMR study of ion-conducting organic-inorganic nanocomposites poly(ethylene glycol) - Silica - LiClO4
Resumo:
Hybrid organic-inorganic ionic conductors, also called ormolytes, were obtained by dissolution of LiClO4 into silica/poly(ethylene glycol) matrices. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to probe the inorganic phase structure (Si-29) and the effects of the temperature and composition on the dynamic behavior of the ionic species (Li-7) and the polymer chains (H-1 and C-13). The NMR results between -100 and +90 degrees C show a strong correlation with ionic conductivity and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The results also demonstrate that the cation mobility is assisted by segmental motion of the polymer, which is in agreement with the results previously reported for pure poly(ethylene oxide), PEG, electrolytes.

The viscoelastic properties of siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO) nanocomposites prepared by the sol-gel process has been analyzed during gelation by dynamic rheological measurements. The changes of storage and loss moduli, complex viscosity and phase angle has been measured as a function of time showing the newtonian viscosity of the sol in the initial step of gelation, and its progressive transformation to a viscoelastic gel. The rheologic properties have been correlated to mass fractal, nearly linear growth models and percolation theory. This study, completed by quasi-elastic light scattering and Si-29 solid state nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, shows that the mechanisms of gelation of siloxane-PPO hybrids depend on the molecular weight of the polymer and on the pH of the hybrid sol. For hybrids prepared in acid medium, a polymerization involving silicon reactive species located at the extremity of the polymer chains and presenting a functionality f = 2 occurs, forming a fractal structure during the first stage of sol-gel transition. For samples prepared under neutral pH, the fractal growth is only observed for hybrids containing short polymer chains (M-w similar to 130 gmol(-1)). The fractal dimensionality determined from the change in the rheological properties, indicates that the fractal growth mechanism changes from reaction-limited to diffusion-limited aggregation when the molecular weight of the PPO increases from 130 to 4000 gmol(-1) and as catalyst conditions change from acidic to neutral. Near the gel point, these hybrid gels have the typical scaling behavior expected from percolation theory. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The temperature dependence has been investigated for the photoinduced birefringence in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from the azocopolymer 4-[N- ethyl -N-(2-hydroxyethyl)] amino-2'-chloro-4'-nitroazobenzene (MMA-DR13) mixed with cadmium stearate. The buildup and relaxation of the birefringence in the range from 20 to 296 K were fitted with a Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) function, with a beta-value of 0.78-0.98 for the build-up and 0.18-0.27 for the decay. This is consistent with a distribution of time constants for the kinetics of the birefringence processes. The maximum birefringence increased with increasing temperature up to 120 K because the free volume fluctuation also increased with temperature. Above 120 K, the birefringence decreased with temperature as thermal diffusion dominates. In the latter range of temperature, an Arrhenius behavior is inferred for both build-up and decay of birefringence. In each case two activation energies were obtained: 0.8 and 5 kJ/mol for the build-up and 10 and 30 kJ/mol for the decay. The energies for the build-up are much lower than those associated with motion of the polymer chain, which means that the dynamics is governed by the orientation of the chromophores. For the decay, local motion of lateral groups of the polymer chains becomes important as the activation energies are within the range of gamma-relaxation energies. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Siloxane-poly(oxyethylene) hybrids obtained by the sol-gel process and containing short polymer chain have been doped with potassium triflate (KCF3SO3). The local structure of these hybrids was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy near the potassium K-edge. Small angle X-ray scattering was used to determine the structure at the nanometer scale. Results revealed that at low and medium potassium concentration (n = [O][K] >= 8, where n represents the molar ratio of ether-type oxygen atoms per alkaline cation) the cations interact mainly with the polymer chains, while at larger doping level (n < 8) the formation of a polyehter:KCF3SO3 Complex is observed. The nanoscopic structure of the hybrids is also affected by doping. By increasing the doping level, decreasing trends in the electronic density contrast between siloxane nanoparticles and polyether matrix and in the siloxane interparticle distance are observed. At high doping level the small angle X-ray scattering patterns are strongly modified, showing the disappearance of the correlation peak and the formation of a potassium-containing nanophase. Two groups of hybrid organic-inorganic composites exhibiting ionic conduction properties, so called ORMOLYTES (organically modified electrolytes), have been prepared by the sol-gel process. The first group has been prepared from mixture of a lithium salt and 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane(IsoTrEOS),O,O′-bis(2-aminopropyl) polypropyleneglycol. These materials produce chemical bonds between the organic (polymer) and the inorganic (silica) phases. The second group has been prepared by an ultrasonic method from a mixture of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), polypropyleneglycol and a lithium salt. The organic and inorganic phases are not chemically bonded in these samples. The Li+ ionic conductivity, σ, of all these materials has been studied by AC impedance spectroscopy up to 100°C. Values of σ up to 10-6 Ω-1·cm-1 have been found at room temperature. A systematic study of the effects of lithium concentration, polymer chain length and the polymer to silica weight ratio on σ shows that there is a strong dependence of σ on the preparation conditions. The dynamic properties of the Li+ ion and the polymer chains as a function of temperature between -100 and 120°C were studied using 7Li solid-state NMR measurements. The ionic conductivity of both families are compared and particular attention is paid to the nature of the bonds between the organic and inorganic components.

The luminescence spectra and extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements of a series of Eu3+-based organic/inorganic xerogels were reported and related to the local coordination of the lanthanide cations. The hybrid matrix of these organically modified silicates, classed as U(2000) ureasils, is a siliceous network to which short organic chains containing oxyethylene units are covalently grafted by means of urea bridges. The luminescent centers were incorporated as europium triflate, Eu(CF3SO3)3, and europium bromide, EuBr3, with concentrations 200≥n≥20 and n=80, 40, and 30, respectively - where n is the number of ether oxygens in the polymer chains per Eu3+ cation. EXAFS measurements were carried out in some of the U(2000)nEu(CF3SO3)3 xerogels (n=200, 80, 60, and 40). The obtained coordination numbers N ranging from 12.8, n=200, to 9.7, n=40, whereas the average Eu3+ first neighbors distance R is 2.48-2.49 Å. The emission spectra of these multiwavelength phosphors superpose a broad green-blue band to a series of yellow-red narrow 5D0→7F0-4 Eu3+ lines and to the eye the hybrids appeared to be white, even at room temperature. The ability to tune the emission of the xerogels to colors across the chromaticity diagram is achieved by changing the excitation wavelength and the amount of salt incorporated in the hybrid host. The local environment of Eu3+ is described as a continuous distribution of closely similar low-symmetry network sites. The cations are coordinated by the carbonyl groups of the urea moieties, water molecules, and, for U(2000)nEu(CF3SO3)3, by the SO3 end groups of the triflate anions. No spectral evidences have been found for the coordination by the ether oxygens of the polyether chains. A mean radius for the first coordination shell of Eu3+ is calculated on the basis of the emission energy assignments. The results obtained for U(2000)nEu(CF3SO3)3, 2.4 Å for 90 ≥n≥40 and 2.6 and 2.5 Å for n=30 and 20, respectively, are in good agreement with the values calculated from EXAFS measurements. The energy of the intraconfigurational charge-transfer transitions, the redshift of the 5D0→7F0 line, with respect to the value calculated for gaseous Eu3+, and the hypersensitive ratio between the 5D0→7F2 and 5D0→7F1 transitions, point out a rather low covalency nature of the Eu3+ first coordination shell in these xerogels, comparing to the case of analogous polymer electrolytes modified by europium bromide. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Hybrid organic-inorganic ionic conductors, also called ormolytes (organically modified electrolytes), were obtained by dissolution of LiClO 4 in siloxane-poly(propylene glycol) matrixes. The dynamic features of these nanocomposites were studied and correlated to their electrical properties. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to probe the effects of the temperature and nanocomposite composition on the dynamic behaviors of both the ionic species ( 7Li) and the polymer chains ( 13C). NMR, dc ionic conductivity, and DSC results demonstrate that the Li + mobility is strongly assisted by the segmental motion of the polymer chain above its glass transition temperature. The ac ionic conductivity in such composites is explained by use of the random free energy barrier (RFEB) model, which is agreement with their disordered and heterogenous structures. These solid ormolytes are transparent and flexible, and they exhibit good ionic conductivity at room temperature (up to 10 -4 S/cm). Consequently, they are very promising candidates for use in several applications such as batteries, sensors, and electrochromic and photoelectro-chemical devices.

Surface-relief gratings are photoinscribed on ionically adsorbed layer-by-layer (LBL) films of an azodye, Brilliant Yellow (BY), which was layered alternately with a polyelectrolyte. Photoinscription is performed by impinging an interference pattern of p- or s-polarized laser light with moderate intensity onto the LBL film, which is unlikely to cause thermal effects. Large-scale mass transport occurs due to the force associated with the field gradient of the light pattern. The ionic interactions between adjacent layers appear to provide the means for the chromophores to drag the polymer chains upon photoizomerization. LBL films were produced from two different polyelectrolytes and under two distinct pH values leading to markedly different film properties especially concerning photodegradation. Exposure to the laser light, for instance, leads to higher photodegradation in the poly(dimethyl diallylammonium chloride)/BY system, in comparison to the poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/BY films. Mass transport in the latter case is predominantly light-driven, which is consistent with the higher amplitude of modulation for p-polarized light (70 nm) compared to that caused by s-polarized light (18 nm). © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, we report on a new route of PEGylation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) by polycondensation reaction with carboxylate groups. Structural and magnetic characterizations were performed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The XRD confirmed the spinel structure with a crystallite average diameter in the range of 3.5-4.1 nm in good agreement with the average diameter obtained by TEM (4.60-4.97 nm). The TGA data indicate the presence of PEG attached onto the SPIONs' surface. The SPIONs were superparamagnetic at room temperature with saturation magnetization (M S) from 36.7 to 54.1 emu/g. The colloidal stability of citrate- and PEG-coated SPIONs was evaluated by means of dynamic light scattering measurements as a function of pH, ionic strength, and nature of dispersion media (phosphate buffer and cell culture media). Our findings demonstrated that the PEG polymer chain length plays a key role in the coagulation behavior of the Mag-PEG suspensions. The excellent colloidal stability under the extreme conditions we evaluated, such as high ionic strength, pH near the isoelectric point, and cell culture media, revealed that suspensions comprising PEG-coated SPION, with PEG of molecular weight 600 and above, present steric stabilization attributed to the polymer chains attached onto the surface of SPIONs. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.
