A presença das mulheres nas ciências exatas

Most well-known and studied names in schoolbooks are men's. It gives one the idea that the world of numbers does not belong to female individuals. In order to verify that this thought is a misconception, a research is carried out about women who, despite all prejudice, have faced many adversities, leaving us many contributions on exact sciences and being relevant until the present date. Nowadays, there is not as much sexual discrimination. Women’s under-representation in exact sciences is due to other motives, such as issues of choice and the option of part-time jobs for professional/familiar balance. Maybe because of this, women have little acknowledgment, as it can be seen in Nobel Prize, where of its 851 awards, only 44 were for women. They are present at different degrees of education, such as licentiate graduation, bachelor’s or master’s, but still outnumbered. In engineering projects, it’s fundamental to determine the active loads in components in order to guarantee acceptable values of safety and reliability according to project specifications. On the other hand, force measurement methods might be very complex and impracticable in some cases and, so that, load cells with eletric resistance strain gages can be applied as a simple and accurate option to measure the required load. The main purpose of this paper is to present the development of a load cell that measures uniaxial forces using electric resistance strain gages without being influenced by the location of the loading in a cantilever beam. For that, it was taken as basis a secondary purpose which is to present a general study of basic and wide concepts about transducers, load cells and extensometers primarily. Information such as: loading and measurements types, characteristics of the presented devices as well as factors that influence its functioning, the most common kinds of Wheatstone bridge links, the main points of a load cell project, cements used to fix extensometers and, finally, the project itself with the tests of the built transducer are presented. By the end of this paper, all the results are shown and analyzed, concluding about the designed load cell and the work itself

Reconstruction of maxillary ridge atrophy caused by dentoalveolar trauma, using autogenous block bone graft harvested from chin: a case report

Background Dentoalveolar trauma, especially when involving front teeth, negatively affect the patient’s life; in particular, tooth avulsion is a complex injury that affects multiple tissues, and no treatment option offers stable long-term outcomes. The aim of this study was to report a case of reconstruction of atrophic anterior alveolar ridge after tooth loss, performed with autograft harvested from the chin, and subsequent prosthetic rehabilitation with the use of an osseointegrated implant. Case report A 23-years-old Caucasian girl, presented an atrophic alveolar bone in the area of tooth 11, as a result of tooth resorption 10 years after a tooth reimplantation procedure. Reconstruction was performed with autogenous bone harvested from the chin. After 6-months healing period to allow autograft incorporation, a dental implant was inserted. After further 6- months, a screw-retained implant supported metal-ceramic prosthesis was fabricated. Results The prosthetic rehabilitation was successful, and after a follow-up period of 5 years, the achieved result was stable.Conclusion It can be concluded that the autogenous bone graft harvested from the chin, is a safe and effective option for alveolar ridge defects reconstruction, allowing a subsequent placement of a dental implant supporting a prosthetic restoration.

Geografia e imagem publicitária: um diálogo possível

The aim of present work is the interpretation of a Coca Cola soft drink advertising image that is shown on a billboard in the city of Presidente Prudente, in São Paulo state. The billboard shows a scene of the video titled Happiness Factory which was presented on television in 2008. Decoding this kind of image, which is integrated to the theoretical and methodical option, favors the visual perception of shapes and their meanings as a reading of the image and the inclusion of the studies of phenomenology of cultural geography to the social reality could reveal some other dimensions, such as the symbolic, the imaginary, the aesthetic ones.This fact will contribute to widen the social trait of Geography and it represents our object of study.The reading will be done after some reflexion on the function of an external advertisement, that is, within the urban context of Presidente Prudente when refering to billboard being studied. It will also be discussed the importance of becoming a critical reader when interpreting advertising messages presented by the communication means in general.

Utilização de extratos vegetais em proteção de plantas

Usage of pesticies in excessive doses or in an inadequate way to control diseases, pests and weeds, has promoted significant environmental damage, contamination of animals, intoxication of farmers, among others. These factors lead to occur the resistance of weeds, pests and pathogens, the appearance of iatrogenic diseases, biological imbalance and reduction in biodiversity. Seeking less aggressive alternatives, plant extracts have been used successfully. Compared to synthetic products, they offer great advantages as generating new compounds, which pathogens are unable to inactivate, and are less toxic, of rapid degradation in the environment, they have broad modes of action, and are derived from renewable resources. It should be emphasized that there are some limitations on its use. The extracts have potencial as insecticide, fungicide, herbicide and nematicide and are considered of good efficiency. The methodologies for obtaining can be achieved through cold extraction, open and closed hot system. The use of plant extracts reappears as a promising and unique option for integrated management in plant protection, being considered as an alternative to control plant pathogens, demonstrating excellent results without causing harm to the environment and living beings.

Husserl on Geometry and Spatial Representation

Husserl left many unpublished drafts explaining (or trying to) his views on spatial representation and geometry, such as, particularly, those collected in the second part of Studien zur Arithmetik und Geometrie (Hua XXI), but no completely articulate work on the subject. In this paper, I put forward an interpretation of what those views might have been. Husserl, I claim, distinguished among different conceptions of space, the space of perception (constituted from sensorial data by intentionally motivated psychic functions), that of physical geometry (or idealized perceptual space), the space of the mathematical science of physical nature (in which science, not only raw perception has a word) and the abstract spaces of mathematics (free creations of the mathematical mind), each of them with its peculiar geometrical structure. Perceptual space is proto-Euclidean and the space of physical geometry Euclidean, but mathematical physics, Husserl allowed, may find it convenient to represent physical space with a non-Euclidean structure. Mathematical spaces, on their turn, can be endowed, he thinks, with any geometry mathematicians may find interesting. Many other related questions are addressed here, in particular those concerning the a priori or a posteriori character of the many geometric features of perceptual space (bearing in mind that there are at least two different notions of a priori in Husserl, which we may call the conceptual and the transcendental a priori). I conclude with an overview of Weyl's ideas on the matter, since his philosophical conceptions are often traceable back to his former master, Husserl.

Bioacoustic analysis of advertisement call in Hyla nana and Hyla sanborni (Anura, Hylidae) in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil

As características relacionadas à comunicação sonora em duas espécies aparentadas, Hyla nana e H. sanborni, pertencentes ao grupo nana de espécies, foram estudadas, entre agosto de 1997 e junho de 1999, em duas poças permanentes de grande porte em área aberta na região de Botucatu, Estado de São Paulo. Foram obtidas gravações de 131 exemplares, 71 indivíduos de H. nana e 58 de H. sanborni, durante início de atividade de vocalização e atividade de vocalização em coro. Houve diferença nos ritmos de emissão de notas dos cantos entre o início das atividades e durante os coros. O canto de anúncio das espécies consiste na emissão de séries consecutivas de notas simples, pulsadas, com taxa de repetição rápida. Hyla nana e H. sanborni apresentam dois tipos de notas em seu canto de anúncio, denominados aqui como tipos A e B. Notas do tipo A, introdutórias, apresentam maior duração e número de pulsos, e suas emissões foram mais freqüentes durante o início das atividades de vocalização. As notas introdutórias são as primeiras da série emitida em atividade de coro. As notas do tipo B, secundárias, são curtas e com menor número de pulsos, sendo emitidas durante as vocalizações em coro. Os dois tipos de notas encontrados diferem significativamente em sua estrutura temporal. As duas espécies apresentaram segregação acústica tanto na estrutura espectral como na temporal de seus cantos de anúncio.

Natural History of the Lutz's Frog Cycloramphus lutzorum Heyer, 1983 (Anura: Cycloramphidae) in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: Description of the Advertisement Call, Tadpole, and Karyotype

We describe the advertisement call, tadpole, karyotype, and additional information on the natural history of Cycloramphus lutzorum from southern Brazil. Sonograms were generated from digitally recorded calls. Tadpoles were collected in the field for description in the lab, and an adult was collected for karyotyping. Data on seasonal activity were gathered monthly from November 2005 to November 2007. All tadpoles (N = 21), juveniles (N = 18), and adults (N = 52) were found exclusively in streams. Reproduction, as identified by calling frogs, occurred from July through November. Frogs call all day long, but mostly at dusk, from rock crevices inside the stream edges near the splash zone. The call is short and loud, with 11 pulsed notes, of 491-641 ms, with a dominant frequency of 0.98-1.39 kHz. We describe the exotrophic and semiterrestrial tadpoles, always found in constantly humid vertical rock walls in the stream. Tadpoles of C. lutzorum are recognized by differences in labial tooth row formula, eye diameter, body shape, position of nares, and development of tail. Like congeneric species, the karyotype of C. lutzorum comprises 26 metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. Cycloramphus lutzorum is restricted to and adapted for living in fast flowing streams, many of which are threatened by deforestation, pollution, and habitat loss. Therefore, we recommend the status of C. lutzorum be changed from its current "Data Deficient" to "Near Threatened (NT)" in the IUCN species red list.
