Pruning methods to MLP neural networks considering proportional apparent error rate for classification problems with unbalanced data

This article deals with classification problems involving unequal probabilities in each class and discusses metrics to systems that use multilayer perceptrons neural networks (MLP) for the task of classifying new patterns. In addition we propose three new pruning methods that were compared to other seven existing methods in the literature for MLP networks. All pruning algorithms presented in this paper have been modified by the authors to do pruning of neurons, in order to produce fully connected MLP networks but being small in its intermediary layer. Experiments were carried out involving the E. coli unbalanced classification problem and ten pruning methods. The proposed methods had obtained good results, actually, better results than another pruning methods previously defined at the MLP neural network area. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Websislapam: sistema de avaliações de pessoas baseado em tecnologias WEB

This work, entitled Websislapam: People Rating System Based on Web Technologies, allows the creation of questionnaires, and the organization of entities and people who participate in evaluations. Entities collect data from people with the help of resources that reduce typing mistakes. The Websislapam maintains a database and provides graphical reporting, which enable the analysis of those tested. Developed using Web technologies such as PHP, Javascript, CSS, and others. Developed with the paradigm of object-oriented programming and the MySQL DBMS. For the theoretical basis, research in the areas of System Database, Web Technologies and Web Engineering were performed. It was determined the evaluation process, systems and Web-based applications, Web and System Engineering Database. Technologies applied in the implementation of Websislapam been described. In a separate chapter presented the main features and artifacts used in the development of Websislapam. A case study demonstrates the practical use of the system

A novel approach for solving constrained nonlinear optimization problems using neurofuzzy systems

A neural network model for solving constrained nonlinear optimization problems with bounded variables is presented in this paper. More specifically, a modified Hopfield network is developed and its internal parameters are completed using the valid-subspace technique. These parameters guarantee the convergence of the network to the equilibrium points. The network is shown to be completely stable and globally convergent to the solutions of constrained nonlinear optimization problems. A fuzzy logic controller is incorporated in the network to minimize convergence time. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed approach.

A simple feedback control for a chaotic oscillator with limited power supply

We proposed a simple feedback control method to suppress chaotic behavior in oscillators with limited power supply. The small-amplitude controlling signal is applied directly to the power supply system, so as to alter the characteristic curve of the driving motor. Numerical results are presented showing the method efficiency for a wide range of control parameters. Moreover, we have found that, for some parameters, this kind of control may introduce coexisting periodic attractors with complex basins of attraction and, therefore, serious problems with predictability of the final state the system will asymptote to. A STORM* environment for building multimedia presentations

This paper describes an environment for constructing multimedia applications which are used to present different multimedia database objects in accordance with spatiotemporal constraints and from different sources. The main contribution of this paper is to propose an environment which integrates both a modelling case tool and an object-oriented database system.

Studying properties of Lagrangian bounds for many-to-many assignment problems

Classical and modified Lagrangian bounds for the optimal value of optimization problems with a double decomposable structure are studied. For the class of many-to-many assignment problems, this property of constraints is used to design a subgradient algorithm for solving the modified dual problem. Numerical results are presented to compare the quality of classical and modified bounds, as well as the properties of the corresponding Lagrangian solutions.
