Cassava starch has been shown to make transparent and colorless flexible films without any previous chemical treatment. The functional properties of edible films are influenced by starch properties, including chain conformation, molecular bonding, crystallinity, and water content. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in combination with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) has been applied for the elucidation of the structure and conformation of carbohydrates. This technique associated with chemometric data processing could indicate the relationship between the structural parameters and the functional properties of cassava starch-based edible films. Successful prediction of the functional properties values of the starch-based films was achieved by partial least squares regression data. The results showed that presence of the hydroxyl group on carbon 6 of the cyclic part of glucose is directly correlated with the functional properties of cassava starch films.

We have used the periodic quantum-mechanical method with density functional theory at the B3LYP level in order to study TiO2/Sn doped (1 1 0) surfaces and have investigated the structural, electronic and energy band properties of these oxides. Our calculated relaxation directions for TiO2 is the experimental one and is also in agreement with other theoretical results. We also observe for the doped systems relaxation of lattice positions of the atoms. Modification of Sri, O and Ti charges depend on the planes and positions of the substituted atoms. Doping can modify the Fermi levels, energy gaps as well as the localization and composition of both valence and conduction band main components. Doping can also modify the chemical, electronic and optical properties of these oxides surfaces increasing their suitability for use as gas sensors and optoelectronic devices. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Statecharts are an extension to finite state machines with capability for expressing hierarchical decomposition and parallelism. They also have a mechanism called history, to remember the last visit to a superstate. An algorithm to create a reachability tree for statecharts is presented. Also shown is how to use this tree to analyse dynamic properties of statecharts; reachability from any state configuration, usage of transitions, reinitiability, deadlocks, and valid sequence of events. Owing to its powerful notation, building a reachability tree for statecharts presents some difficulties, and we show how these problems were solved in the tree we propose.

Peat was taken from the Sergipe State, Brazil and characterized by several techniques: elemental and thermal analyses; Fourier infrared (FTIR) and solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies; scanning electron microscopy (SEM), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Also, the Sergipe State peat samples were compared with other peat sample from later from Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The lowest O/C and E 4/E 6 ratios and differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves of the Santo Amaro (SAO) sample indicated that this sample had the highest degree of decomposition. FTIR results showed that Itabaiana (ITA) and São Paulo (SAP) samples presented more prominent peak at 1086 cm -1 attributed the presence of Si-O than SAO sample spectra. The SAO sample showed two more intense peaks at 2920 cm -1 and 2850 cm -1. These results were corroborated by 13C NMR and thermal gravimetric (TG) where the relative abundance of the alkyl-C groups was greater in the SAO sample. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD) of SAO sample is characteristic of amorphous matter however, the SAP and ITA samples revealed the large presence of quartz mineral. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) showed that the surface of peat samples have porous granules of organic material. The ITA and SAP peat samples are alike while SAO peat sample is richer in organic material. Only the SAO sample has truthful characteristics of peat. The results of this study showed that the samples are very different due to variable inorganic and organic material contents. ©2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Objective: The present study aimed at evaluating the PROP1 and HESX1 genes in a group of patients with septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) and pituitary hormone deficiency (combined – CPHD; isolated GH deficiency – GHD). Eleven patients with a clinical and biochemical presentation consistent with CPHD, GHD or SOD were evaluated. Subjects and methods: In all patients, the HESX1 gene was analyzed by direct sequence analysis and in cases of CPHD the PROP1 gene was also sequenced. Results: A polymorphism (1772 A > G; N125S) was identified in a patient with SOD. We found three patients carrying the allelic variants 27 T > C; A9A and 59 A > G; N20S in exon 1 of the PROP1 gene. Mutations in the PROP1 and HESX1 genes were not identified in these patients with sporadic GHD, CPHD and SOD. Conclusion: Genetic alterations in one or several other genes, or non-genetic mechanisms, must be implicated in the pathogenic process.
