In this work we present a generalization of an exact sequence of normal bordism groups given in a paper by H. A. Salomonsen (Math. Scand. 32 (1973), 87-111). This is applied to prove that if h : M-n --> Xn+k, 5 less than or equal to n < 2k, is a continuous map between two manifolds and g : M-n --> BO is the classifying map of the stable normal bundle of h such that (h, g)(*) : H-i (M, Z(2)) --> H-i (X x BO, Z(2)) is an isomorphism for i < n - k and an epimorphism for i = n - k, then h bordant to an immersion implies that h is homotopic to an immersion. The second remark complements the result of C. Biasi, D. L. Goncalves and A. K. M. Libardi (Topology Applic. 116 (2001), 293-303) and it concerns conditions for which there exist immersions in the metastable dimension range. Some applications and examples for the main results are also given.

It is shown that the local isomorphism between the conformal group of Minkowski spacetime and the group SO(4,2) makes sense only if one eliminates from SO(4,2) one of the Sitter boosts contained in it. © 1992.

Starting from a decomposition of the self-dual field in (2 + 1) dimensions, we build up an alternative quantum theory which consists of a self-dual model coupled to a Maxwell-generalized Chern-Simons theory. We discuss the fermion-boson equivalence of this quantum theory by comparing it with the Thirring model. Using these results we were able to compute the mass of the bosonized fermions up to third order in 1/m. Some problems related to the number of poles of the effective propagator are also addressed.

In this work we prove in a precise way that the soldering formalism can be applied to the Srivastava chiral boson (SCB), in contradiction with some results appearing in the literature. We promote a canonical transformation that shows directly that the SCB is composed of two Floreanini-Jackiw particles with the same chirality in which the spectrum is a vacuumlike one. As another conflicting result, we prove that a Wess-Zumino (WZ) term used in the literature consists of a scalar field, once again denying the assertion that the WZ term adds a new degree of freedom to the SCB theory in order to modify the physics of the system. © 2001 The American Physical Society.

Wood is generally considered an anisotropic material. In terms of engineering elastic models, wood is usually treated as an orthotropic material. This paper presents an analysis of two principal anisotropic elastic models that are usually applied to wood. The first one, the linear orthotropic model, where the material axes L (Longitudinal), R(radial) and T(tangential) are coincident with the Cartesian axes (x, y, z), is more accepted as wood elastic model. The other one, the cylindrical orthotropic model is more adequate of the growth caracteristics of wood but more mathematically complex to be adopted in practical terms. Specifically due to its importance in wood elastic parameters, this paper deals with the fiber orientation influence in these models through adequate transformation of coordinates. As a final result, some examples of the linear model, which show the variation of elastic moduli, i.e., Young's modulus and shear modulus, with fiber orientation are presented.

Assume that X is an oriented smooth (n+k)-manifold. Then the kernel of the forgetful map F considered in this work consists of immersions f: Mn → X nullbordant as a continuous map. Using an exact sequence of normal bordism groups previously given, we present a homological characterization of the kernel of the forgetful map F. Also, we prove that Ωi(X, εs - ηs and Hi(X,Z) are -isomorphic for i≤3 and C2-isomorphic for i≤2, where C2,3 (resp. C2 is the class of abelian groups whose elements have order 2p. 3q (resp. 2p), and ηs is an orientable stable vector bundle over X. © 2009 Pushpa Publishing House.

In this paper, the dynamical response of a coupled oscillator is investigated, taking in consideration the nonlinear behavior of a SMA spring coupling the two oscillators. Due to the nonlinear coupling terms, the system exhibits both regular and chaotic motions. The Poincaré sections for different sets of coupling parameters are verified. © 2011 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Bieri-Eckmann [6] introduced the concept of relative cohomology for a group pair (G, S), where G is a group and S is a family of subgroups of G and, by using that theory, they introduced the concept of Poincaré duality pairs (G, S) and provided a topological interpretation for such pairs through Eilenberg-MacLane pairs K(G, S, 1). A Poincaré duality pair is a pair (G, S) that satisfies two isomorphisms, one between absolute cohomology and relative homology and the second between relative cohomology and absolute homology. In this paper, we present a proof that those two isomorphisms are equivalent. We also present some calculations on duality pairs by using the cohomological invariant defined in [1] and studied in [2-4]. © 2012 Pushpa PublishingHouse.
