Forty-two mares were randomly assigned in a 3 x 2 factorial experiment which included three intervals between rectal palpation (6/6h, 12/12h and once a day palpation) and two frequencies of inseminations (daily or every other day). The mares were inseminated with semen from only one stallion, diluted in minimal contamination extender. There were no differences in the conception rate at first cycle, conception/cycle, conception total, efficiency of pregnancy in either system of rectal palpation, independently of the frequency of insemination utilized. Also there were no differences among intervals of rectal palpation concerning the following reproductive characteristics: number of cycles/mare, cycles/pregnant mare, cycles/ pregnancy, pregnancy/cycle, number of inseminations/mare, inseminations/ pregnant mare and insemination/open mare. There were no differences in pregnancy rate at first cycle, pregnancy rate/cycle, pregnancy rate total and efficiency of pregnancy between the two frequency of insemination. However, the frequency of insemination influenced the number of inseminations/mare, number of inseminations/ pregnant mare and inseminations/open mare. The highest values were observed with the mares inseminated daily. Therefore, insemination every other day can be recommended. If necessary the mare may be palpated rectally at intervals of six hours without reducing the pregnancy rate.

The kidding intervals (IDP) of dairy goats raised in Southeastern Brazil were studied to quantify the influence of environmental factors and to estimate genetic parameters by means of least squares (MMQ) and restricted maximum likelihood (REML). The data analyzed were obtained from five farms and three breeds (Alpine, Saanen, and Toggenburg). The overall mean and standard error of IDP, as estimated by MMQ, were 339 +/- 12.70 days. The interaction of year x season of parturition influenced IDP. In two of the years studied, goats kidding at the end of the kidding season showed a shorter IDP when compared to those that were kidding after the end of the season. A quadratic trend of IDP over years was observed across the three kidding periods. For the three seasons. IDP increased from 1986 until mid-1989 and decreased thereafter. The heritability and repeatability of IDP, as estimated by MMQ and REML, were: 0.046 +/- 0.071 and 0.103 +/- 0.043, and 0.00026 and 0.08411, respectively. These estimates indicate that little genetic gain can be expected from selection for this trait.

One hundred forty seven cycles of mares were allocated in a completely randomized experiment, with different number of replications and divided in four treatments (T1 = 24 hours preovulation; T2 = 48 hours preovulation; T3 = 48 hours preovulation and in tbe same day of ovulation; T4 = 72 hours preovulation and in the same day of ovulation), in order to study the effect of AI/ovulation interval on mare fertility. The mares were inseminated three times for wek (monday, wednesday and friday), with semen of only one stallion diluted in extender skim milk-glucose, using a volume of 15ml, with 400 x 10(6) sptz viable, cooled at 14 degrees C/3.6 hours, and transported in modified container Celle. Conception rates were not different according to the treatments. So, observed spermatic survival for 60 hours showed the practicability of the inseminations on monday, wednesday and friday.

Objetive. To estimate the heritability of interval calving in crossbred cattle. Materials and methods. Information from database of La Leyenda farm, in the municipality of Caucasia (Antioquia) was used. A single-trait animal model was used, that included genetic group, year of birth, season of birth and the number of calvings as fixed effects and the additive direct genetic, permanent environmental and residual as random effects. Results. The heritability estimated was 0.15 +/- 0.07 and the phenotypic mean was 544 +/- 97 days. Conclusions. The heritability for the interval between calvings was low, indicating that little genetic progress can be achieved by selecting for this characteristic.

The objective of this study was to determine the optimal water interval and its relationship with soybean yield. For this study, an experiment was carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, in a Haplustox medium textured soil. The experimental design consisted of a completely randomized with subdivided plots (six compaction levels and four soybean cultivars), with four replications. The soil compaction levels were: T 0 = 0, T 1* = 1, T 1 = 1, T 2 = 2, T 4 = 4 and T 6 = 6 strides of a 11 ton tractor, on the same place, side by side on soil surface. In T 1* the compaction occurred when the soil was dry. In December, 2003 the soybean (Glycine max), cultivars IAC Foscarin 31, MG/BR 46 (Conquista), BRS/MG 68 (Vencedora) and IAC 8 - 2 were sown. After sowing, indeformed soil samples were collected in layers of 0.03-0.06, 0.08-0.11, 0.15-0.18 and 0.22-0.25 m for determination of soil water content and resistance to penetration curve and the optimal water content. According to model, the critical soil bulk density (Dsc) for soybean yield varied between cultivars from 1.56 to 1.64 Mg m -3. The soil bulk density at which the yield of soybean cultivars decreased was greater than the Dsc.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of soil compaction caused by tractor wheel traffic on the limiting water range (LLWR), shoot growth and levels of compaction and four replications in a completely randomized experimental design. Soil samples with preserved structure were collected in the layers: 0.02-0.05; 0.08-0.11; 0.15-0.18 and 0.22-0.25m to determine macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity, bulk density, resistance to penetration and LLWR. The evaluated corn parameters were: plant and first spike height, steam diameter, number of spikes per plant, plant dry matter, dry matter of 1000 seeds and seed productivity. The soil compaction restricted all corn parameters except the number of spikes per plant and dry matter of 1000 seeds. The LLWR was reduced by the soil resistance to penetration, even in the tilled soil with bulk density of 1.12 Mg m-3. Only the treatment with 11 Mg tractor, repeated four times on the area, demonstrated bulk density above critical bulk density in the LLWR that was 1.37 Mg m-3, where the seed productivity was significantly smaller.
