Avaliou-se a eficiência de métodos de aplicação de inseticidas granulados sistêmicos para o controle das cigarras Quesada gigas (Olivier) e Dorisiana drewseni (Stål) do cafeeiro (Coffea arabica). O ensaio foi conduzido em cafezal cv. Mundo Novo com idade de seis anos, espaçamento de 3,5 X 1,5 m, com uma planta/cova, no ano agrícola 1992/1993. Utilizou-se um delineamento em blocos casualizados, com 21 tratamentos e 4 repetições, cada uma contendo parcelas de cinco plantas. Os tratamentos consistiram nas aplicações dos produtos triadimenol + disulfoton 1,5% + 7,5% (26 g/cova), aldicarb 150G (10,00 g/cova), ethoprophos 100G (30,00 g/cova), phorate 5G (80,00 g/cova) e terbufos 5G (40,00 g/cova) em quatro modalidades de aplicação: aplicador costal manual Mebuki TF8; canequinha, lançando o produto para o ápice da planta; aplicador tratorizado Kamaq CK2-AG; e sulcos em meia lua, abertos manualmente, na projeção da copa. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 70, 105 e 140 dias após aplicação dos produtos, onde foram efetuadas aberturas de trincheiras de 50 X 50 X 50cm por cova, procedendo-se a contagem do número de ninfas vivas. Concluiu-se que o aplicador costal manual e canequinha revelaram-se os mais eficientes (86,0 - 93,5% e 76,8 - 86,7%, respectivamente); aplicação tratorizada e sulcos na projeção de copa tiveram sua eficiência variável com o produto utilizado; terbufos apresentou maior redução da população (98,2 - 100%) e phorate (79,6 - 99,1%) e a mistura triadimenol + disulfoton (82,3 - 97,3%) apresentaram alta eficiência, não diferindo do terbufos. Aldicarb apresentou desempenho satisfatório (68,1 - 85,0%) conforme o modo de aplicação e ethoprophos não foi eficaz quando aplicado com o aplicador costal manual (58,4%), canequinha (45,1%) e sulco (31,9%).

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o propósito de estudar o comportamento granulométrico de grãos de soja em função da variação do teor de água. A pesquisa foi realizada com seis variedades, sendo duas transgênicas e quatro comuns, com os teores de água de 10%, 12%, 15%, 20% b.s. A granulometria foi determinada utilizando-se de seis subamostras de 120 grãos para cada teor de água, e as suas dimensões (comprimento, largura e espessura) obtidas por meio de paquímetro digital. Os resultados indicaram que cada variedade de soja comportou-se de maneira diferenciada e que as comuns tiveram comportamento granulométrico diferenciado das transgênicas.

The macro- and microstructures of the rabbit celiac-mesenteric ganglion complex are described in 20 young animals. We found ten celiac ganglia, twenty-seven cranial mesenteric ganglia and eleven celiac-mesenteric ganglia. The celiac ganglia had a rectangular shape in nine cases (90%) and a circular one in one case (10%). The cranial mesenteric ganglia presented triangular (66.7%), rectangular (11.1%), L-shape (18.5%) and semilunar (3.7%) arrangements. The celiac-mesenteric ganglia were organized in three patterns: a single left celiac-mesenteric ganglion having a caudal portion (72.7%); celiac-mesenteric ganglia without a caudal portion (18.2%) and a single celiac-mesenteric ganglion with two portions: left and right (9.1%).The microstructure was investigated in nine celiac-mesenteric ganglia. The results showed that the celiac-mesenteric ganglion is actually a ganglion complex constituted of an agglomerate of ganglionic units separated by nerve fibers, capillaries and septa of connective tissue. Using the semi-thin section method we described the cellular organization of the celiac-mesenteric ganglion complex. Inside of each ganglionic unit, there were various cell types: principal ganglion neurons (PGN), glial cells (satellite cells) and SIF cells (small intensely fluorescent cells or small granular cells), which are the cytologic basis for each ganglionic unit of the rabbit's celiac-mesenteric ganglion complex.

Com o objetivo de estudar o parcelamento e a largura da faixa de aplicação como meios para aumentar a recuperação pelo milho do nitrogênio da uréia aplicada em superfície, foi conduzido no ano agrícola 93/94, em um Latossolo Vermelho Escuro, em condições de campo, um experimento delineado em blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições. Sete tratamentos foram utilizados: testemunha (sem N em cobertura); aplicação de N parcelada (50 kg ha-1 de N aos 38 dias após semeadura - d.a.s e 50 kg ha-1 de N aos 60 d.a.s.) para faixas de 10, 20 e 40 cm; aplicação de N (100 kg ha-1 de N aos 38 d.a.s.) para faixas de 10 e 40 cm e, aplicação de N parcelada (50 kg de N/ha aos 38 d.a.s. e 50 kg ha-1 de N aos 60 d.a.s.) para faixa de 20 cm de largura, neste caso, uréia granulada. A aplicação de uréia parcelada em cobertura, em faixas de 10, 20 e 40 cm de largura, não afetaram a massa de matéria seca, o conteúdo, a quantidade e a recuperação do N pela planta de milho. A recuperação de N pela planta de milho foi maior para a aplicação de 220 kg ha-1 de uréia em uma única aplicação em faixas de 10cm de largura em relação a de 40 cm. O parcelamento da uréia aumentou os valores de massa seca, conteúdo, quantidade e recuperação do N na planta de milho em relação a aplicação em uma única vez.

The discovery of the superconductivity of MgB(2) was of great importance, because this material is one of the few known binary compounds and has one of the highest critical temperatures (39 degrees K). As MgB(2) is a granular compound, it is fundamentally important to understand the mechanisms of the interaction of the defects and the crystalline lattice, in addition to the eventual processes involving the grain boundaries that compose the material. In this sense, the mechanical spectroscopy measurements constitute a powerful tool for this study, because through them we can obtain important information about phase transitions, the behavior of interstitial or substitutional elements, dislocations, grain boundaries, diffusion, instabilities, and other imperfections of the lattice. For this paper, the samples were prepared using the PIT method and were characterized by density, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electric resistivity, magnetization, and mechanical spectroscopy. The samples were measured in their as-cast condition and after an ultra-high-vacuum heat treatment. The results showed complex spectra, in which were identified relaxation processes due to dislocation movement, interaction among interstitial elements and dislocations, auto-diffusion, and movement of grain boundaries. Some of these processes disappeared with the heat treatment.

The hydrodynamic characterization and the performance evaluation of an aerobic three phase fluidized bed reactor in wastewater fish culture treatment are presented in this report. The objective of this study was to evaluate the organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorous removal efficiency in a physical and biological wastewater treatment system of an intensive Nile Tilapia laboratory production with recirculation. The treatment system comprised of a conventional sedimentation basin operated at a hydraulic detention time HDT of 2.94 h and an aerobic three phase airlift fluidized bed reactor AAFBR operated at an 11.9 min HDT. Granular activated carbon was used as support media with density of 1.64 g/cm(3) and effective size of 0.34 mm in an 80 g/L constant concentration. Mean removal efficiencies of BOD, COD, phosphorous, total ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen were 47%, 77%, 38%, 27% and 24%, respectively. The evaluated system proved an effective alternative for water reuse in the recirculation system capable of maintaining water quality characteristics within the recommended values for fish farming and met the Brazilian standards for final effluent discharges with exception of phosphorous values. Slow sand filtration is an efficient water treatment technique used for treating surface water with relatively low levels of contamination. Despite the slow sand filtration at pathogen, algae and cyanobacteria removal efficiency, it has some restrictions in relation to the required area for slow filters, and the cleaning activities for the filters and the stone pre-filters when used in the treatment. This research evaluated during 120 days the use of non woven & sand pre-filtration columns as part of a slow filtration process for the apparent color, turbidity, algae, cyanobacteria, phytoflagellates and diatomaceous. The columns shown an efficient removal of the monitored parameters and demonstrated as a vantage their faster and easier cleaning process and less awkward than the required to the stone pre-filters. The turbidity removal efficiency increased progressively during the experiment, especially after the first 35 days of the start; the apparent color removal by the pre-filtration columns was of 85%, and working together with the polishing of activated carbon columns was up to 95; the diatomaceous, phytoflagellates, algae and cyanobacteria removal by the columns achieve a weekly average of 95%, its recommended to use filtration rates lower to 1,5m(3)/m(2)/d.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi monitorar o desempenho de remoção de nitrogênio amoniacal no tratamento das águas residuárias da produção intensiva de tilápia nilótica em sistema com recirculação de água. O sistema foi constituído por um sedimentador convencional e um reator aeróbio de leito fluidizado trifásico com circulação, operados com tempos de detenção hidráulica de 176.4 e 11.9 minutos respectivamente. O meio suporte utilizado no reator foi o carvão ativado granular com densidade aparente de 1.64 g/cm3 e tamanho efetivo de 0.34 mm; a concentração do meio suporte no reator foi mantida constante em 80 g/L. A eficiência média de remoção do nitrogênio amoniacal total foi de 41.2%. O sistema avaliado é uma alternativa efetiva para o reuso da água em sistemas de recirculação para aqüicultura. Embora a variabilidade das concentrações do nitrogênio amoniacal afluente cujo valor médio foi de 0.136 mg/L, o efluente do reator conservou as características de qualidade da água estáveis, com concentrações médias de nitrogênio amoniacal de 0.079 mg/L e do oxigênio dissolvido de 6.70 mg/L, recomendáveis para a criação dos peixes e nas faixas de valores permitidos pela legislação Brasileira (Resolução CONAMA No. 357 de março 5 de 2005) para lançamento de efluentes finais nos corpos de água receptores.

Photopyroelectric spectroscopy (PPES), in the 400 < lambda < 900 nm wavelength range, was used to study thermal properties of differently doped polyaniline (PAN) films. The photopyroelectric intensity signal V-n(lambda) and its phase F-n(lambda) were independently measured, as well as the intensity V-n(f) and the phase F-n(f) (f being the chopping frequency) for a given A of the saturation part of the PPES spectrum. Equations of both the intensity and the phase of the PPES signal, taking into account the thermal and the optical characteristics of the PAN films and the pyroelectric detector, were used to fit the experimental results. From the fittings we obtained, with great accuracy, the values of thermal conductivity k and thermal diffusivity coefficient a of PAN films of different doping degrees. It was observed that, in contrast with the strong doping-dependence of the electrical conductivity, the thermal parameters of PAN films remained practically unchanged under doping. This apparent discrepancy is explained by the granular metal model of doped PAN. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Background Mucocutaneous lesions in paracoccidioidomycosis are granulomatous and result from tissue responses to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the aetiological agent.Objectives and methods In this study we investigate the expression of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-10 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta 1 by immunohistochemistry in skin and mucosa lesions from patients with the chronic form of paracoccidioidomycosis, evaluated before and at day 20 of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment. Cytokine production by peripheral blood monocytes was also studied by enzyme immunoassay.Results Intense immunostaining for TNF-alpha was detected in mononuclear cells that infiltrated granulomas in all skin and mucosa lesions before treatment simultaneously with low IL-10 granular deposits in these cells. At day 20 of treatment, there was reduced TNF-alpha and IL-10 deposition. Immunoreactive TGF-beta 1 was observed diffusely in the dermis and generally in the cytoplasm of macrophages and giant cells, before treatment, and as increased TGF-beta 1 deposits in the fibrosis area at day 20 of treatment. Peripheral blood monocytes from patients with paracoccidioidomycosis, evaluated before treatment, produced high endogenous levels of TNF-alpha, TGF-beta 1 and IL-10 in relation to healthy controls. Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated monocytes from patients secreted lower levels of TNF-alpha in both periods of evaluation while no impairment in capacity of IL-10 and TGF-beta production was observed.Conclusions Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole therapy was effective in decreasing fungal load in the lesions, allowing patient immune response to control the infection leading to the healing of the lesions.

A clinical review of three potentially severe fungal diseases, which are characterized in many cases by mucosal involvement, is presented. They are paracoccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and mucormycosis. Mucosal involvement for paracoccidioidomycosis and rhinocerebral mucormycosis is frequent. Thus, oral involvement may provide early clue for diagnosis. In paracoccidioidomycosis, the mucosal lesion classically shows superficial ulcers with granular appearance and hemorrhagic points, usually on lips, palate, and jugal mucosa. In mucormycosis, necrosis of the palate followed for purulent discharge is a hallmark of rhinocerebral disease. Treatment with amphotericin B desoxycholate or the new second-generation triazoles is highly efficacious.
