A variational analysis of the spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian operator - d2/dx2 + x2 + l(l + 1)/x2 + λ|x| -α, where α is a real positive parameter, is reported in this work. The formalism makes use of the functional space spanned by the solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the linear harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian supplemented by a Dirichlet boundary condition, and a standard procedure for diagonalizing symmetric matrices. The eigenvalues obtained by increasing the dimension of the basis set provide accurate approximations for the ground state energy of the model system, valid for positive and relatively large values of the coupling parameter λ. Additionally, a large coupling perturbative expansion is carried out and the contributions up to fourth-order to the ground state energy are explicitly evaluated. Numerical results are compared for the special case α = 5/2. © 1989 American Institute of Physics.

In this work, the dissociation dynamics of heteronuclear diatomic molecules is investigated by means of the classical driven Morse oscillator. The interaction of the molecule and the laser field is represented through the product of the molecule dipole function and the electric field of the laser. This interaction may lead to the breaking of the chemical bound, that is, to the dissociation of the molecule. The work was developed in two parts. In the first part, we studied the dissociation as a function of the range of the permanent dipole. In the second part, we maximized the dissociation probability manipulating the parameters of the external field. We have observed that the dissociation can be controlled by means of variations of parameters associated with the range of the permanent dipole

We consider the problem of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a scalar field in the framework of recently introduced dressed coordinates. We compute all the probabilities associated with the decay process of an excited level of the oscillator. Instead of doing direct quantum mechanical calculations we establish some sum rules from which we infer the probabilities associated to the different decay processes of the oscillator. Thus, the sum rules allows to show that the transition probabilities between excited levels follow a binomial distribution. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V.

We compute the partition function of an anyon-like harmonic oscillator. The well known results for both the bosonic and fermionic oscillators are then re-obtained as particular cases of our function. The technique we employ is a non-relativistic version of the Green function method used in the computation of one-loop effective actions of quantum field theory.

A variational analysis of the spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian -d2/dr2 + r2 + lambda/r5/2, lambda > 0, is reported. A trial function automatically satisfying both the Dirichlet boundary condition at the origin and the boundary condition at infinity is introduced. The results are excellent for a very large range of values of the coupling parameter lambda, suggesting that the present variational function is appropriate for the treatment of the spiked oscillator in all its regimes (strong, moderate, and weak interactions).

Some postulates are introduced to go from the classical Hamilton-Jacobi theory to the quantum one. We develop two approaches in order to calculate propagators, establishing the connection between them and showing the equivalence of this picture with more known ones such as the Schrödinger's and the Feynman's formalisms. Applications of the above-mentioned approaches to both the standard case of the harmonic oscillator and to the harmonic oscillator with time-dependent parameters are made. © 1991 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

The problem of a harmonic oscillator coupling to an electromagnetic potential plus a topological-like (Chern-Simons) massive term, in two-dimensional space, is studied in the light of the symplectic formalism proposed by Faddeev and Jackiw for constrained systems.

The chaotic oscillation in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) under an impulsive force was discussed using mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. It was found that sustained chaotic oscillation resulted in a BEC under the action of an impulsive force generated by suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or the harmonic oscillator trapping potential. The analysis suggested that the final state interatomic attraction played an important role in the generation of the chaotic dynamics.

Successful experiments in nonlinear vibrations have been carried out with cantilever beams under harmonic base excitation. A flexible slender cantilever has been chosen as a convenient structure to exhibit modal interactions, subharmonic, superharmonic and chaotic motions, and others interesting nonlinear phenomena. The tools employed to analyze the dynamics of the beam generally include frequency- and force-response curves. To produce force-response curves, one keeps the excitation frequency constant and slowly varies the excitation amplitude, on the other hand, to produce frequency-response curves, one keeps the excitation amplitude fixed and slowly varies the excitation frequency. However, keeping the excitation amplitude constant while varying the excitation frequency is a difficult task with an open-loop measurement system. In this paper, it is proposed a closed-loop monitor vibration system available with the electromagnetic shaker in order to keep the harmonic base excitation amplitude constant. This experimental setup constitutes a significant improvement to produce frequency-response curves and the advantages of this setup are evaluated in a case study. The beam is excited with a periodic base motion transverse to the axis of the beam near the third natural frequency. Modal interactions and two-period quasi-periodic motion are observed involving the first and the third modes. Frequency-response curves, phase space and Poincaré map are used to characterize the dynamics of the beam.

Eigenstates of a particle in a localized and unconfined harmonic potential well are investigated. Effects due to the variation of the potential parameters as well as certain results from asymptotic expansions are discussed. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
