The thermal properties of plums (Prunus domestica) and prunes were investigated in the moisture content of 14.2-80.4% (wet basis) near room temperature (approximately 28 degrees C). The apparent density of the fruits increased from 1042.9 to 1460.0 kg/m(3), and the bulk density increased from 706.6 to 897.5 kg/m(3) as the plums were dried, following classical empirical models as a function of moisture content. It was found that specific heat, effective thermal diffusivity, and effective thermal conductivity of the prunes increased with the moisture content of the samples, which can be represented by using different empirical models.

A non-variational technique for computing the stress-energy tensor is presented. The prescription is used, among other things, to obtain the correct field equations for Prasanna's highly nonlinear electrodynamics.

A computer-assisted method for analysing photoacoustic spectra has been developed in the Windows(TM) environment with the use of an easy graphical interface, the computer simulation was carried out with the aim of using the entire expression of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory, thus permitting multiple applications. The simulation was applied to a system that mimics the electron transfer process in which the concentration of octaethylporphin donor molecules was constant whereas the concentration of duroquinone and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1, l-benzoquinone acceptor molecules varied. The increment of the acceptor concentration influenced the photoacoustic amplitude and phase signals. In the phase signal a significant shift to smaller values was observed, denoting a faster heat generation. The analysis of the photoacoustic signal enabled the determination of the thermal diffusivity, the result obtained through the simulation was about (7 +/- 1) x 10(-7) m(2) s(-1) indicating that changes in the photoacoustic phase signals were due to the electron transfer process rather than changes in the thermal properties of the sample.

The recipe used to compute the symmetric energy-momentum tensor in the framework of ordinary field theory bears little resemblance to that used in the context of general relativity, if any. We show that if one stal ts fi om the field equations instead of the Lagrangian density, one obtains a unified algorithm for computing the symmetric energy-momentum tensor in the sense that it can be used for both usual field theory and general relativity.

We evaluate the one-loop vacuum polarization tensor for three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED), using an analytic regularization technique, implemented in a gauge-invariant way. We show thus that a gauge boson mass is generated at this level of radiative correction to the photon propagator. We also point out in our conclusions that the generalization for the non Abelian case is straightforward.

In this work we report on the use of the Thermal Lens method to verify the evolution of the thermal diffusivity of sunflower and soybean vegetable oils utilized in preparation of twenty five snacks portions. Our results show that the thermal diffusivity for sunflower oil does not change between 1 and 25 portions of fried snacks. By another hand, the soybean thermal diffusivity exhibits a little decrease for higher portion of fried snacks, indicating that for this oil the triglyceride level is reduced as a degradation process.

We derive an one-parameter family of consistency conditions to braneworlds in the Brans-Dicke gravity. The General Relativity case is recovered by taking a correct limit of the Brans-Dicke parameter. We show that it is possible to build a multiple AdS brane scenario in a six-dimensional bulk only if the brane tensions are negative. Besides, in the five-dimensional case, it is showed that no fine tuning is necessary between the bulk cosmological constant and the brane tensions, in contrast to the Randall-Sundrum model. We investigate the effects of light-cone fluctuations over the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of a real massless minimally coupled scalar field defined in a (d+1)-dimensional flat space-time with topology R×Td. For modeling the influence of light-cone fluctuations over the quantum field, we consider a random Klein-Gordon equation. We study the case of centered Gaussian processes. After taking into account all the realizations of the random processes, we present the correction caused by random fluctuations. The averaged renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy associated with the scalar field is presented. © 2013 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Here we obtain all possible second-order theories for a rank-2 tensor which describe a massive spin-2 particle. We start with a general second-order Lagrangian with ten real parameters. The absence of lower-spin modes and the existence of two local field redefinitions leads us to only one free parameter. The solutions are split into three one-parameter classes according to the local symmetries of the massless limit. In the class which contains the usual massive Fierz-Pauli theory, the subset of spin-1 massless symmetries is maximal. In another class where the subset of spin-0 symmetries is maximal, the massless theory is invariant under Weyl transformations and the mass term does not need to fit into the form of the Fierz-Pauli mass term. In the remaining third class neither the spin-1 nor the spin-0 symmetry is maximal and we have a new family of spin-2 massive theories. © 2013 American Physical Society.

In situ megascale hydraulic diffusivities (D) of a confined loess aquifer were estimated at various scales (10 <= L <= 1500 m) by a finite difference model, and laboratory microscale diffusivities of a loess sample by empirical formulas. A scatter plot reveals that D fits to a single power function of L, providing that microscale diffusivities are assigned to L = 1 m and that differences in diffusivity observed between micro- and megascales are assigned to medium heterogeneity appraised by variations in the curvature and slope of natural hydraulic head waves propagating through the aquifer. Subsequently, a general power relationship between D and L is defined where the base and exponent terms stand for the aquifer storage capability under a confined regime of flow, for the microscale hydraulic conductivity and specific yield of loess, and for the changes in curvature and slope of hydraulic head waves relative to values defined at unit scale.[GRAPHICS]Editor Z.W.
