The effect in rats of an anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) electrolytic lesion on salivary secretion induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) or intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of a cholinergic agonist (pilocarpine) was investigated. Sham- or AV3V-lesioned rats anesthetized with urethane and with a stainless steel cannula implanted into the lateral ventricle (LV) were used. The amount of salivary secretion was studied over a seven-minute period after i.c.v. or i.p. injection of pilocarpine. In sham-operated rats, i.p. injection of pilocarpine (1 mg/kg b.w.) (after 6 h, 2, 7, and 15 days) produced salivary secretion (486 +/- 21, 778 +/- 85, 630 +/- 50, and 560 +/- 55 mg/7 min, respectively). This effect was reduced 6 h, 2, and 7 days after an AV3V lesion (142 +/- 22, 113 +/- 32, and 290 +/- 62 mg/7 min, respectively), but not 15 days after an AV3V lesion (516 +/- 19 mg/7 min). I.c.v. injection of pilocarpine (120 mug in 1 muL), in sham-operated rats after 6 h, 2, 7, and 15 days also produced salivary secretion (443 +/- 20, 417 +/- 81, 496 +/- 14, and 427 +/- 47 mg/7 min, respectively). The effects of i.c.v. pilocarpine were also reduced 6 h, 2, and 7 days after an AV3V lesion (143 +/- 19, 273 +/- 14, and 322 +/- 17 mg/7 min, respectively), but not after 15 days (450 +/- 28 mg/7 min). The results demonstrate that the central nervous system, and particularly the AV3V region, is important for the effect of pilocarpine on salivary secretion in rats. Moreover, they suggest that activation of central pathways may play an important part in the salivary secretion to peripheral pilocarpine in rats.

In this study the Minos element was analyzed in 26 species of the repleta group and seven species of the saltans group of the genus Drosophila. The PCR and Southern blot analysis showed a wide occurrence of the Minos transposable element among species of the repleta and the saltans groups and also a low number of insertions in both genomes. Three different analyses, nucleotide divergence, historical associations, and comparisons between substitution rates (d(N) and d(S)) of Minos and Adh host gene sequences, suggest the occurrence of horizontal transfer between repleta and saltans species. These data reinforce and extend the Arca and Savakis [Genetica 108 (2000) 263] results and suggest five events of horizontal transfer to explain the present Minos distribution: between D. saltans and the ancestor of the mulleri and the mojavensis clusters; between D. hydei and the ancestor of the mulleri and the mojavensis clusters; between D. mojavensis and D. aldrichi; between D. buzzatii and D. serido; and between D. spenceri and D. emarginata. An alternative explanation would be that repeated events of horizontal transfer involving D. hydei, which is a cosmopolitan species that diverged from the others repleta species as long as 14 Mya, could have spread Minos within the repleta group and to D. saltans. The data presented in this article support a model in which distribution of Minos transposon among Drosophila species is determined by horizontal transmission balanced by vertical inactivation and extinction. This study determined how many times alates of Paratrechina flavipes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) can copulate in the field and laboratory. In the field, females preferred to mate once and the mating number of males is unknown. In the laboratory, females mated singly but males could inseminate two or three females. The duration of succeeding copulations was greater than the first copulation. Multiple mating males died sooner than single mating ones. The results suggest that male death is promoted by sperm consumption.

The code STATFLUX, implementing a new and simple statistical procedure for the calculation of transfer coefficients in radionuclide transport to animals and plants, is proposed. The method is based on the general multiple-compartment model, which uses a system of linear equations involving geometrical volume considerations. Flow parameters were estimated by employing two different least-squares procedures: Derivative and Gauss-Marquardt methods, with the available experimental data of radionuclide concentrations as the input functions of time. The solution of the inverse problem, which relates a given set of flow parameter with the time evolution of concentration functions, is achieved via a Monte Carlo Simulation procedure.Program summaryTitle of program: STATFLUXCatalogue identifier: ADYS_v1_0Program summary URL: http://cpc.cs.qub.ac.uk/summaries/ADYS_v1_0Program obtainable from: CPC Program Library, Queen's University of Belfast, N. One such pathway, associated with the food chain, is the grass-animal-man sequence. The distribution of trace elements in humans and laboratory animals has been intensively studied over the past 60 years [R.C. Pendlenton, C.W. Mays, R.D. Lloyd, A.L. Brooks, Differential accumulation of iodine-131 from local fallout in people and milk, Health Phys. 9 (1963) 1253-1262]. In addition, investigations on the incidence of cancer in humans, and a possible causal relationship to radioactive fallout, have been undertaken [E.S. Weiss, M.L. Rallison, W.T. London, W.T. Carlyle Thompson, Thyroid nodularity in southwestern Utah school children exposed to fallout radiation, Amer. J. Public Health 61 (1971) 241-249; M.L. Rallison, B.M. Dobyns, F.R. Keating, J.E. Rall, F.H. Tyler, Thyroid diseases in children, Amer. J. Med. 56 (1974) 457-463; J.L. Lyon, M.R. Klauber, J.W. Gardner, K.S. Udall, Childhood leukemia associated with fallout from nuclear testing, N. Engl. J. Med. 300 (1979) 397-402]. From the pathways of entry of radionuclides in the human (or animal) body, ingestion is the most important because it is closely related to life-long alimentary (or dietary) habits. Those radionuclides which are able to enter the living cells by either metabolic or other processes give rise to localized doses which can be very high. The evaluation of these internally localized doses is of paramount importance for the assessment of radiobiological risks and radiological protection. The time behavior of trace concentration in organs is the principal input for prediction of internal doses after acute or chronic exposure. The General Multiple-Compartment Model (GMCM) is the powerful and more accepted method for biokinetical studies, which allows the calculation of concentration of trace elements in organs as a function of time, when the flow parameters of the model are known. However, few biokinetics data exist in the literature, and the determination of flow and transfer parameters by statistical fitting for each system is an open problem.Restriction on the complexity of the problem: This version of the code works with the constant volume approximation, which is valid for many situations where the biological half-live of a trace is lower than the volume rise time. Another restriction is related to the central flux model. The model considered in the code assumes that exist one central compartment (e.g., blood), that connect the flow with all compartments, and the flow between other compartments is not included.Typical running time: Depends on the choice for calculations. Using the Derivative Method the time is very short (a few minutes) for any number of compartments considered. When the Gauss-Marquardt iterative method is used the calculation time can be approximately 5-6 hours when similar to 15 compartments are considered. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Glycogen synthase, an enzyme involved in glycogen biosynthesis, is regulated by phosphorylation and by the allosteric ligand glucose-6-phosphate (G6P). In addition, enzyme levels can be regulated by changes in gene expression. We recently cloned a cDNA for glycogen synthase (gsn) from Neurospora crassa, and showed that gsn transcription decreased when cells were exposed to heat shock (shifted from 30degreesC to 45degreesC). In order to understand the mechanisms that control gsn expression, we isolated the gene, including its 5' and 3' flanking regions, from the genome of N. crassa. An ORF of approximately 2.4 kb was identified, which is interrupted by four small introns (II-V). Intron I (482 bp) is located in the 5'UTR region. Three putative Transcription Initiation Sites (TISs) were mapped, one of which lies downstream of a canonical TATA-box sequence (5'-TGTATAAA-3'). Analysis of the 5'-flanking region revealed the presence of putative transcription factor-binding sites, including Heat Shock Elements (HSEs) and STress Responsive Elements (STREs). The possible involvement of these motifs in the negative regulation of gsn transcription was investigated using Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assays (EMSA) with nuclear extracts of N. crassa mycelium obtained before and after heat shock, and DNA fragments encompassing HSE and STRE elements from the 5'-flanking region. While elements within the promoter region are involved in transcription under heat shock, elements in the 5'UTR intron may participate in transcription during vegetative growth. The results thus suggest that N. crassa possesses trans-acting elements that interact with the 5'-flanking region to regulate gsn transcription during heat shock and vegetative growth.

Purpose: This study was undertaken to evaluate clinical and pathologic findings that predicted pelvic lymph node metastasis and parametrial and vaginal involvement in patients with stage IB carcinoma of the cervix. Methods: 71 patients with diagnosis of stage IB (FIGO) cervical cancer were prospectively studied from December 1997 to August 2002. The patient's age, clinical stage (IB1 or IB2), histological classification, grade of differentiation, tumor volume, and lymphatic vascular space invasion (LVSI) were evaluated. Statistical methods included chi(2) test and Fisher's exact test to evaluate significant differences between the groups. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: the clinical stage was IB1 in 51 patients (71.8%) and IB2 in 20 patients (28.2%). The histological classification identified squamous cell carcinoma in 60 patients (84.5%) and adenocarcinoma in 11 patients (15.5%). The average tumoral volume was 22.8 &PLUSMN; 8 24.3 cm(3) (0.3-140.0 cm(3)). The tumor was well differentiated (G1) in 8 (11.3%), moderately differentiated (G2) in 40 (56.3%) and poorly differentiated in 23 (32.4%) of the cases. The presence of LVSI was detected in 14 patients (19.7%) and was associated with pelvic lymph node metastasis and vaginal and parametrial involvement (p = 0.002, p = 0.001 and p < 0.001; respectively). The average number of positive pelvic lymph nodes was significantly higher in the patients with LVSI compared with patients without LVSI (2.47 +/- 2.8 vs. 0.33 +/- 0.74; p = 0.001). There was no association of age, clinical stage, histological classification, grade of differentiation or tumor volume with pelvic lymph node metastasis and vaginal and parametrial involvement. Conclusion: the presence of LVSI is significantly associated with pelvic lymph node metastasis and vaginal and parametrial involvement in patients with stage IB cervical carcinoma. In the present study, the effects of electrolytic lesions of the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) region and of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) on the pressor response induced by bilateral carotid occlusion (BCO) in conscious intact and aortic baroreceptor-denervated (AD) rats were investigated. In intact control rats, BCO during 60 s produced a pressor response that could be divided into an early response (ER = 50 +/- 3 mmHg) that reachs a peak during the first 20 s and a sustained late response (LR), smaller than ER (32 +/- 2 mmHg), observed during the last 30 s. In intact-innervated rats, AV3V lesion (2 days) reduced ER (22 +/- 3 mmHg) and LR (16 +/- 2 mmHg), whereas the bilateral MFB lesions (6 days) mainly reduced LR (9 +/- 1 mmHg). Rats with simultaneous lesion of both the AV3V region and the MFB showed additional reduction of the ER (15 +/- 3 mmHg), but not LR (11 +/- 1 mmHg) when compared to the effect of MFB lesions alone. Compared to the AV3V lesion alone, LR but not ER was reduced in rats with a double lesion. In sham-lesioned rats, AD induced a significant increase in the pressor response to BCO (ER = 75 +/- 4 mmHg and LR = 65 +/- 3 mmHg) when compared to intact controls. A similar reduction in ER and LR was observed in AD rats after AV3V (ER = 35 +/- 3 mmHg and LR = 40 +/- 2 mmHg) and MFB (ER = 49 +/- 6 mmHg and LR = 41 +/- 5 mmHg) lesions alone or combined (ER = 40 +/- 6 mmHg and LR = 35 +/- 7 mmHg). The results showed that simultaneous lesions of both the AV3V region and the MFB practically abolished the pressor response to BCO. They also suggested that aortic baroreceptor activity plays a significant role in the effects of AV3V and MFB lesions on the pressor response to BCO.

Inferior Alveolar Nerve (IAN) transposition is an option for prosthetic rehabilitation in cases of moderate or even severe bone reabsorption for patients that do not tolerate removable dentures. The aim of the present report is to describe an inferior alveolar nerve transposition with involvement of the mental foramen for implant placement. The surgical procedure was performed under local anesthesia, by the inferior alveolar, lingual and buccal nerve blocking technique. Centripetal osteotomy was performed, and bone tissue was removed, leaving the nerve tissue free in the foramen area. After that, transsection of the incisor nerve was performed, and lateral osteotomy was started from the buccal direction, toward the trajectory of the IAN. The procedure was concluded, by making use of a delicate resin spatula to manipulate the vascular-nervous bundle. The drilling sequence for placing the dental implants was performed, and autogenous bone was harvested using a bone collector attached to the surgical suction appliance. After the implants were placed, the bone tissue previously collected during the osteotomies and drilling processes was placed in order to protect the IAN from contact with the implants. The surgical protocol for inferior alveolar nerve transposition, followed by implant placement presented excellent results, with complete recovery of the sensitivity, seven months after the surgical procedure.

We study the Boussinesq equation from the point of view of a multiple-time reductive perturbation method. As a consequence of the elimination of the secular producing terms through the use of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy, we show that the solitary-wave of the Boussinesq equation is a solitary-wave satisfying simultaneously all equations of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy, each one in an appropriate slow time variable. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Armitermes euamignathus Silvestri (Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) is a mound building termite that is common in Brazilian regions of the Cerrado vegetation. Multiple neotenic reproductives were found in three isolated nests of these species localized in other secondary habitats different from Cerrado vegetation. The number of second form queens was always higher than the number of secondary males. In two of these nests, the primary king was present along with the second form reproductives. Eggs and brood were found in the three nests but mature alates were present in only one. Multiple neotenic reproductives were never found in the studied Cerrado region where the nests contained only the primary pair. A study of oviposition rate between primary queens and nymphoid reproductives showed an increased number of eggs in the colony headed by neotenic reproductives.

The yeast form of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the causative agent of a deep mycosis in humans, is known to be phagocytized by, and to multiply inside, macrophages. In this work we describe the involvement of gp43, a major antigenic protein of P. brasiliensis, in the initial steps of attachment of the fungus to macrophages. Anti-gp43 F(ab) polyclonal fragments were capable of inhibiting phagocytosis in a concentrationdependent manner. Sheep red blood cells sensitized with purified gp43 were more endocytized than SRBC alone, and this process was also inhibited by anti-gp43 F(ab) fragments. Inhibition tests indicated the involvement of fucose and mannose residues in the phagocytosis of the fungus and of SRBC-gp43 by macrophages. Taken together, these results suggest that gp43 may be involved in the adherence and uptake of the fungus by murine peritoneal macrophages, and that this binding may be dependent on monosaccharide residues that are part of the gp43 glycoprotein. © 1998 ISHAM.

A high rate of root exposure and consequently the exposure of the furcation area is usually observed in multirooted teeth. In maxillary molar teeth, this fact may endanger the three existent furcations (buccal, mesial and distal), causing serious problems. In this research, distance measures from the buccal furcation to the mesial (F1M) and distal (F1D) surfaces of the mesio-buccal and disto-buccal roots; from the mesial furcation to the buccal (F2B) and palatal (F2P) surfaces of the mesio-buccal and palatal roots and from the distal furcation to the buccal (F3B) and palatal (F3P) surfaces of the disto-buccal and palatal roots, respectively were established. One hundred maxillary first molar teeth were used, 50 of the right and 50 of the left side. Reference marks and demarcations were determined on the furcations and also on the root surfaces involved in the measures. We concluded that these measurements are important because they may effectivelly contribute to diagnosis, prevention and treatment of periodontal problems.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of two working cast fabrication techniques using strain-gauge analysis. Methods: Two working cast fabrication methods were evaluated. Based on a master model, 20 working casts were fabricated by means of an indirect impression technique using polyether after splinting the square transfer copings with acrylic resin. Specimens were assigned to 2 groups (n=10): Group A (GA): type IV dental stone was poured around the abutment analogs in the conventional way; Group B (GB), the dental stone was poured in two stages. Spacers were used over the abutment analogs (rubber tubes) and type IV dental stone was poured around the abutment analogs in the conventional way. After the stone had hardened completely, the spacers were removed and more stone was inserted in the spaces created. Six strain-gauges (Excel Ltd.), positioned in a cast bar, which was dimensionally accurate (perfect fit) to the master model, recorded the microstrains generated by each specimen. Data were analyzed statistically by the variance analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (α= 5%). Results: The microstrain values (με) were (mean±SD): GA: 263.7±109.07με, and GB: 193.73±78.83με. Conclusion: There was no statistical difference between the two methods studied.

The present study evaluated the effects of histamine 10 -2 M on longitudinal preparations of rat portal vein. It was observed that histamine 10 -2 M induced relaxation of rat portal vein preparations pre-contracted with phenylephrine 10 -4 M. On the other hand, no pharmacological effects were observed in preparations not pre-contracted. The observed histamine-induced relaxing effect was absent in preparations pre-contracted with KCl (120 mM) or in the presence of depolarizing nutritive solution. However, the histamine-induced relaxation was still present in the endothelium-removed preparations. The histamine-induced relaxation also was not prevented by astemizole (10 -6 M, 10 -5 M and 10 -4 M), cimetidine (10 -5 M, 10 -4 M and 10 -3 M) or thioperamide (10 -6 M, 10 -5 M and 10 -4 M), selective antagonists H 1, H 2 and H 3, respectively. The presence of L-NAME 10 -4 M or L-NAME 10 -4 M plus indomethacin 10 -5 M also did not prevent the histamine-induced relaxation observed in rat portal vein. Thus, the histamine-induced relaxation observed in rat portal vein appears to involve a non-endothelial hyperpolarizing mechanism independent of H 1, H 2 and H 3 receptors.
