Aim: The present study was developed in a deforested stream located in a region that exhibits marked seasonality with the purpose to investigate whether ecological descriptors of the quantitative structure (i.e., composition, abundance, biomass, species richness, diversity) and feeding of fishes do change between the dry and wet periods. Methods: Sampling was conducted bimonthly from April 2004 to February 2005 by using a standardized effort with electrofishing equipment and environmental variables measurements. Results: We collected 713 fishes belonging to 23 species. The most abundant species were Gymnotus carapo (24.0%) and Poecilia reticulata (23.8%). Species richness, abundance, and biomass showed to be higher in the wet period, but these differences were not significant and did not influence the multivariate pattern of the assemblage (ANOSIM, R = 0.148). Nevertheless, average dissimilarity between community structure in the dry and wet periods was 52.7%, mainly due to the differential contribution of P. reticulata, notably more abundant in the wet season, under quasi-hypoxic water conditions. Examination of 333 gastric contents of 12 species evidenced that food variety was higher in the dry period. of these species, 67% (Astyanax altiparanae, Astyanax fasciatus, Geophagus brasiliensis, Gymnotus carapo, Hypostomus ancistroides, Phalloceros harpagos, Poecilia reticulata, and Rhamdia quelen) kept the diet throughout the year, being classified in the same trophic groups in both periods, and detritus was the most important item for half of them, followed by aquatic insects. Overall, no significant differences in the community's diet between periods were registered (ANOSIM, R = [long dash]0.04). Conclusions: This relative constancy suggests a quite regular availability of resources (mainly shelters in submerged marginal grasses and detritus) along the year.

A study of the voltammetric behaviour of the food colours brilliant blue FCF (C.I. 42090), erythrosine (C. I. 45430) and quinolin e yellow (C. I. 47005) in the pH range 2-10 have been carried out by cathodic stripping voltammetry. At pH 4.5 (acetate buffer) with an accumulation potential of 0 V and accumulation time of 30 s, the voltammograms presented well-defined reduction peaks at potential - 0.76 V for brilliant blue FCF, - 0.85 V for quinoline yellow and - 0.54 V for erythrosine. Linear calibration graphs were obtained from 8 to 80 mug l(-1) brilliant blue, from 4 to 43 mug l(-1) quinoline yellow and from 10 to 70 mug l(-1) erythrosine. The method has been successfully applied to identify and quantify binary mixtures of these dyes and applied for determining brilliant blue FCF in commercial food products.

The general objective of this work was to develop a monitoring and management model for aquatic plants that could be used in reservoir cascades in Brazil, using the reservoirs of AES-Tiete as a study case. The investigations were carried out at the reservoirs of Barra-Bonita, Bariri, Ibitinga, Promissao, and Nova-Avanhandava, located in the Tiete River Basin; Agua Vermelha, located in the Grande River Basin; Caconde, Limoeiro, and Euclides da Cunha, which are part of the Pardo River Basin; and the Mogi-Guacu reservoir, which belongs to the Mogi-Guacu River basin. The main products of this work were: development of techniques using satellite-generated images for monitoring and planning aquatic plant control; planning and construction of a boat to move floating plant masses and an airboat equipped with a DGPS navigation and application flow control system. Results allowed to conclude that the occurrence of all types of aquatic plants is directly associated with sedimentation process and, consequently, with nutrient and light availability. Reservoirs placed at the beginning of cascades are more subject to sedimentation and occurrence of marginal, floating and emerged plants, and are the priority when it comes to controlling these plants, since they provide a supply of weeds for the other reservoirs. Reservoirs placed downstream show smaller amounts of water-suspended solids, with greater transmission of light and occurrence of submerged plants.

The present study was undertaken to determine anthropometrical parameters in male adult Wistar rats. We tested the hypothesis that the anthropometrical index may identify obesity and may predict its adverse effects on lipid profile and oxidative stress in rats. Two experimental protocols were performed. in the first experiment, 50 male Wistar rats, 21 days old and fed a control chow were studied up to 150 days of age. in the second experiment, male Wistar rats, 60 days old, were divided into three groups (n = 8): control (C) given free access to a control chow; (S) receiving the control chow and drinking 30% sucrose ad libitum and (HQ fed a high-carbohydrate diet ad libitum. The first experiment showed that food consumption, energy intake and body weight increased with increasing age, while specific rate of body mass gain was significantly decreased. There were no significant differences in body length and thoracic circumference of rats from 60 days of age. The abdominal circumference (AC) and body mass index (BMI) significantly increased with enhancing age in rats up to 90 days of age and remained constant thereafter. In the second experiment, after 30 days of dietary treatment, the final body weight, body mass gain, carcass fat and BMI were higher in S and HC rats than in C. There were no significant alterations in body length and carcass protein among the groups. Triacylglycerol (TG), total cholesterol (CT), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and lipid hydroperoxide (LH) were higher in S and HC rats than in C. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) decreased in HC rats and total antioxidant substances (TAS) decreased in S and HC rats. There were positive correlations between BMI with carcass fat, BMI with LH and BMI and serum TG concentration. In conclusion, the BMI for male adult Wistar rats ranged between 0.45 and 0.68 g/cm(2). Obesity may be easily estimated from the BMI in rats. Alterations in BMI were associated with dyslipidemic profile and oxidative stress in serum of rats and BMI may predict these adverse consequences of the obesity in rats.

This work aims to analyse the composition, abundance and distribution of the Penaeidea species which occur in the Ubatuba Bay (23 degrees 26'S and 45 degrees 02'W). The samples were monthly collected from October/1992 to September/1993. Each collect was composed of two parallel radials: the first (radial ''A'') was carried out in the mid region of the bay and the second one (radial ''B'') in the bay mouth. The trawls took one hour in a boat equipped with one otter-trawl (10 mm of mesh). The registered environmental factors were depth, bottom water temperature, granulometric composition and organic content of the sediment. After the trawls, the shrimp were separated from other marine organisms and counted. Eight species of shrimp were obtained: Xiphopenaeus kroyeri; Artemesia longinaris; Penaeus (L.) schmitti; P. (F.) brasiliensis; Trachypenaeus; constrictus; Sicyonia typica; S. dorsalis and Pleoticus muelleri. The most abundant species were X. kroyeri, A. longinaris, P. muelleri and T. constrictus. It was verified a very strong seasonality among the species. The X. kroyeri species occurred in both radials along the months but its abundance decreased from a November to March. Such fact is attributed to the temperature which reached a minimum value of 20 degrees C during this period. The species A. longinaris and P. muelleri were more frequent in the radial B which was caracterized by 14 +/- 1.3 m of depth, low organic content in the sediment (2.97%) and granulometric composition of medium sand. The distribution and abundance of these shrimps in the bay, beyond the hydrological features can be related to biotic factors as food availability, migration, inter and intra specific relations (competition, predation, etc.).

Food intake and plasma thyroid hormone levels (T4 and T3) were higher in pigs acclimated to cold (12°) than hot (32°) environments. The exposure of cold pigs to hot ambient temperature decreased food intake and plasma T4 and T3, whereas for hot acclimated animals the change in ambient temperature (from 32 to 12° C) increased food intake and plasma thyroid hormone levels, but the new steady state level of food intake was reached only after 96 hr of temperature transfer despite the rapid change in plasma levels of thyroid hormones. Cold-acclimated pigs, when transferred to a hot environment after thyroidectomy, also reduced food intake, but hot pigs shifted to cold ambient temperature after thyroidectomy did not significantly increase food ingestion. The results of this experiment suggest that food intake adjustment depends on the previous living temperature and that thyroid hormones seem to play an important role in increasing the metabolically active mass that probably sustains the new steady state level of food intake, particularly in a cold environment.

Most manufactured foods contain chemicals added as a deliberate part of the manufacturing process. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the mutagenicity and antimutagenicity of annatto, a natural pigment extracted from the Bixa orellana L. and widely used as a colorant in foods. The micronucleus test was performed in bone marrow cells from Swiss male mice treated with one of the three concentrations of annatto (1330, 5330 and 10,670 ppm), incorporated into the diet. The animals were fed with the diets for 7 days and sacrificed 24 h after the last treatment. For the evaluation of the antimutagenic potential of annatto, at day 7, the animals received an intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (50 mg/kg body weight). Under the concentrations tested annatto did not present mutagenic or antimutagenic activities on the mice bone marrow cells. However, an increased frequency of micronucleated cells was observed when the highest concentration (10,670 ppm) was administered simultaneously with cyclophosphamide. In conclusion, the data indicate that annatto colour, for the conditions used, is neither mutagenic nor an inhibitor of induced mutations, although it should be used carefully since high doses may increase the effect of a mutagen. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. The reproductive cycle of Potimirim glabra, especially the female size at sexual maturity, reproductive period and fecundity, was studied at two sites of one of the northern littoral streams in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Prawns were collected monthly for one year. The minmum size at sexual maturity was estimated from the smallest ovigerous female (cephalothorax length = CL), and the reproductive period was determined monthly by examining the relative frequency of ovigerous females. Size comparisons between sampling sites was carried out using the Mann-Whitney u test. The relationship between environmental factors and reproductive aspects was verified using the Spearman's rank correlation. At Site 1, the collected ovigerous females had a CL mean size of 4.24±0.36 mm (n=481); at Site 2, ovigerous females (n=391) had a CL mean size of 5.48±0.49 mm. The reproductive pattern in Camburi is seasonal, with the highest frequency of ovigerous females in February. The frequency of ovigerous females was positively correlated to organic matter content in the substratum, rainfall and temperature. Increased percentage organic matter may indicate greater food availability whereas higher rainfall increases the velocity of the current, thereby aiding the larvae, which depend on brackish water to complete their development, to reach the estuarine region. The temperature acts on the speed of larval development. At Site 1, the mean fecundity obtained was 202±72.31 eggs (90 females; CL from 2.7 to 4.7mm PL), whereas at Site 2, it was 433.3±120.7 eggs (46 females; CL from 4.0 to 5.5mm PL). © 2010 Balaban.

The sequential extraction procedure of Zinc and lead performed in a Brazilian soil showed that it presents high pollution potential once over 90% of total lead is present in fractions where the metals can be easily mobilized. The fraction contents are as follow: F1 = 174 and 15 mg kg-1; F2 = 3155 and 9.7 mg kg -1; F3 = 99 and 1.6 mg kg -1; Residual fraction = 38 and 5.5 mg kg -1 for lead and zinc, respectively. The comparison with non contaminated soil only Pb 2+ concentration is above its intervention reference concentration, 900 mg kg -1.

Background: Ethanol (EtOH) alters the all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) levels in some tissues. Retinol and ATRA are essential for cell proliferation, differentiation, and maintenance of prostate homeostasis. It has been suggested that disturbances in retinol/ATRA concentration as well as in the expression of retinoic acid receptors (RARs) contribute to benign prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer. This study aimed to evaluate whether EtOH consumption is able to alter retinol and ATRA levels in the plasma and prostate tissue as well as the expression of RARs, cell proliferation, and apoptosis index. Methods: All animals were divided into 4 groups (n = 10/group). UChA: rats fed 10% (v/v) EtOH ad libitum; UChACo: EtOH-naïve rats without access to EtOH; UChB: rats fed 10% (v/v) EtOH ad libitum; UChBCo: EtOH-naïve rats without access to EtOH. Animals were euthanized by decapitation after 60 days of EtOH consumption for high-performance liquid chromatography and light microscopy analysis. Results: EtOH reduced plasma retinol concentration in both UChA and UChB groups, while the retinol concentration was not significantly different in prostate tissue. Conversely, plasma and prostate ATRA levels increased in UChB group compared with controls, beyond the up-regulation of RARβ and -γ in dorsal prostate lobe. Additionally, no alteration was found in cell proliferation and apoptosis index involving dorsal and lateral prostate lobe. Conclusions: We conclude that EtOH alters the plasma retinol concentrations proportionally to the amount of EtOH consumed. Moreover, high EtOH consumption increases the concentration of ATRA in plasma/prostate tissue and especially induces the RARβ and RARγ in the dorsal prostate lobe. EtOH consumption and increased ATRA levels were not associated with cell proliferation and apoptosis in the prostate. © 2012 by the Research Society on Alcoholism.
