The complete I-V characteristics of SnO(2)-based varistors, particularly of the Pianaro system SCNCr consisting in 98.9%SnO(2)+1%CoO+0.05%Nb(2)O(5)+0.05%Cr(2)O(3), all in mol%, have been seldom reported in the literature. A comparative study at low and high currents of the nonohmic behavior of SCNCr- and ZnO-based varistors (modified Matsuoka system) is proposed in this work. The SCNCr system showed higher nonlinearity coefficients in the whole range of measured current. The electrical breakdown field (E(b)) was twice as high for the SCNCr system (5400 V/cm) than for the ZnO varistor (2600 V/cm) due to a smaller average grain size of the former (4.5 mu m) with respect to the latter (8.5 mu m). Nevertheless, we consider that another important factor responsible for the high E(b) in the SCNCr system is the great number of electrically active interfaces (85%) as determined with electrostatic force microscopy (EFM). It was also established that the SCNCr system might be produced in disks of smaller dimensions than that of commercial ZnO-based product, with a 5.0 cm(-1) minimal area-volume (A/V) ratio. The SCNCr reached the saturation current in a short time because of the high resistivity of the grains, which is five times higher than that of the grains in ZnO-based varistors.

Highly crystalline ZnO and Ga-modified zinc oxide (ZnO:Ga) nanoparticles containing 1, 3 and 5 atom% of Ga3+ were prepared by precipitation method at low temperature. The films were characterized by XRD, BET, XPS and SEM. No evidence of zinc gallate formation (ZnGa2O4), even in the samples containing 5 atom% of gallium, was detected by XRD. XPS data revealed that Ga is present into the ZnO matrix as Ga3+, according to the characteristic binding energies. The particle size decreased as the gallium level was increased as observed by SEM, which might be related to a faster hydrolysis reaction rate. The smaller particle size provided films with higher porosity and surface area, enabling a higher dye loading. When these films were applied to dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as photoelectrodes, the device based on ZnO: Ga 5 atom% presented an overall conversion efficiency of 6% (at 10 mW cm(-2)), a three-fold increase compared to the ZnO-based DSSCs under the same conditions. To our knowledge, this is one of the highest efficiencies reported so far for ZnO-based DSSCs. Transient absorption (TAS) study of the photoinduced dynamics of dye-sensitized ZnO:Ga films showed that the higher the gallium content, the higher the amount of dye cation formed, while no significant change on the recombination dynamics was observed. The study indicates that Ga-modification of nanocrystalline ZnO leads to an improvement of photocurrent and overall efficiency in the corresponding device.

The effect of Cr2O3 on the electrical properties of the multicomponent ZnO varistors was investigated using voltage-current curves and impedance spectroscopy. The structure and morphological modifications were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. It was observed in samples with addition 0.1 mol% Cr2O3 that there was an improvement in the electrical properties of the varistors, but the increase in concentration had a deleterious effect on the potential barrier at the grain boundary. The excess Cr2O3 segregates at the grain-boundary region and increases the donor concentration, leading to a higher leakage current.

The effects of Cr2O3 on the properties of (Zn, Co, Ta)-doped SnO2 varistors were investigated in this study. The samples with different Cr2O3 concentrations were sintered at 1400 degrees C for 2 h. The properties of (Zn, Co, Ta, Cr)-doped SnO2 varistors were evaluated by XRD. dilatornetry, SEM, I-V and impedance spectroscopy. DC electrical characterization showed a dramatic increase ill the breakdown electrical field and in the nonlinear coefficient with the increase in Cr2O3 concentration. The grain size was found to decrease from 13 to 5 mu m with increasing the Cr2O3 content. The impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show two time constants, one at low frequencies and the other at high frequencies. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. SnO2 ceramics doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation of SnZnWO8 and ZnWO6 at the grain boundaries without strong influence on the densification process. The electrical characterization (log E x log J) shows that the ternary system SnO2-ZnO-WO3 exhibits a very high resistivity of around 10(14) Omega M. Independently of the WO3 concentration, the electrical conductivity of the Sn02-ZnO-WO3 system is always lower than that of the undoped tin dioxide. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Two ways of application of intensive milling in ZnO varistors processing were compared. First was intensive milling of mixture of previously prepared constituent phases. In this case, intensive milling was applied only to obtain highly activated nanocrystalline varistor powder mixtures. Second application is intensive milling of simple mixture of oxides that could result not only in activation and formation of nanocrystal line powders, but also in mechanochernical reaction and synthesis of constituent phases. Powders and ceramics samples were characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. as well as by de electrical measurements (nonlinearity coefficients, leakage current and breakdown field). Differences in microstructural and electrical properties of obtained varistors were discussed and optimal milling and processing conditions were recommended. The best electrical characteristics were found in sample ZI -DMCP-m, which exhibited leakage current of 2.5 mu A/cm(2), nonlinear coefficient reaching 58 and breakdown field of 8950 V/cm. The phenomenon of electrical degradation in ZnO varistors was studied by application of high-intensity current pulses. A wave shape of 8 X 20-mu-s and rectangular waves of 1 and 2 ms were used. The degradation was estimated by reference electric-field variation and by Schottky voltage barrier deformation. The results showed that current pulses reduce both the height and the width of the barrier voltage. It was also observed that the donor density N(d) did not change but the surface states density N(s) decreased with degradation.

The effects of La2O3 on the properties of (Zn, Co, Ta) doped SnO2 varistors were investigated in this study. The samples with different La2O3 concentrations were sintered at 1400 degrees C for 2 h and their properties were characterized by XRD, SEM, I-V and impedance spectroscopy. The grain size was found to decrease from 13 pm to 9 gm with increasing La2O3 content. The addition of rare earth element leads to increase the nonlinear coefficient and the breakdown voltage. The enhancement was expected to arise from the possible segregation of lanthanide ion due to its larger ionic radius to the grain boundaries, thereby modifying its electrical characteristics. Furthermore, the dopants such as La may help in the adsorption of O' to O '' at the grain boundaries characteristics. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Undoped and indium-doped Zinc oxide (ZnO) solid films were deposited by the pyrosol process at 450 degrees C on glass substrates From solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2, 5, and 10 at.%. Electrical measurements performed at room temperature show that the addition of indium changes the resistance of the films. The resistivities of doped films are less than non-doped ZnO films by one to two orders of magnitude depending on the dopant concentration in the solution. Preferential orientation of the films with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate was detected by X-ray diffraction and polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structures measurements at the Zn K edge. This orientation depends on the indium concentration in the starting solution. The most textured films were obtained for solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2 and 5 at.%. When In/Zn = 10 at.%, the films had a nearly random orientation of crystallites. Evidence of the incorporation of indium in the ZnO lattice was obtained from extended X-ray absorption fine structures at the In and Zn K edges. The structural analysis of the least resistive film (Zn/In = 5 at.%) shows that In substitutes Zn in the wurtzite structure. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Structural and electrical properties of ZnO varistors were investigated as a function of spinel composition. Six varistor mixtures differing only in chemical composition of spinel, were prepared by mixing separately synthesized constituent phases (DSCP method). Compositions of constituent phases in sintered samples were investigated by changes of lattice parameters of the phases, as well as by EDS analysis of the constituent phases. It was found that compositions of ZnO, intergranular and spinel phases were partially changed during sintering due to redistribution of additives, that was controlled by starting spinel composition and its stability. Electrical characterization showed significant difference in electrical properties of investigated varistors: nonlinearity coefficients ranging from 22 to 55 and leakage currents differing by the order of magnitude. Activation energies of conduction were obtained from ac impedance spectroscopy measurements. Calculated values of activation energies were in the range 0.61-1.0 eV confirming difference in defect structure of ZnO grain boundaries in varistors containing different spinel phases.
