We give the correct prescriptions for the terms involving ∂ -1 xδ(x - y), in the Hamiltonian structures of the AKNS and DNLS systems, necessary for the Jacobi identities to hold. We establish that the sl(2) and sl(3) AKNS systems are tri-Hamiltonians and construct two compatible Hamiltonian structures for the sl(n) AKNS system. We give a method for the derivation of the recursion operator for the sl(n + 1) DNLS system, and apply it explicitly to the sl(2) case, showing that such a system is tri-Hamiltonian. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

In this paper we employ the construction of the Dirac bracket for the remaining current of sl(2) q deformed Kac-Moody algebra when constraints similar to those connecting the sl(2)-Wess-Zumino-Witten model and the Liouville theory are imposed to show that it satisfies the q-Virasoro algebra proposed by Frenkel and Reshetikhin The crucial assumption considered in our calculation is the existence of a classical Poisson bracket algebra induced in a consistent manner by the correspondence principle, mapping the quantum generators into commuting objects of classical nature preserving their algebra.

We study the existence of periodic solutions in the neighbourhood of symmetric (partially) elliptic equilibria in purely reversible Hamiltonian vector fields. These are Hamiltonian vector fields with an involutory reversing symmetry R. We contrast the cases where R acts symplectically and anti-symplectically. In case R acts anti-symplectically, generically purely imaginary eigenvalues are isolated, and the equilibrium is contained in a local two-dimensional invariant manifold containing symmetric periodic solutions encircling the equilibrium point. In case R acts symplectically, generically purely imaginary eigenvalues are doubly degenerate, and the equilibrium is contained in two two-dimensional invariant manifolds containing nonsymmetric periodic solutions encircling the equilibrium point. In addition, there exists a three-dimensional invariant surface containing a two-parameter family of symmetric periodic solutions.

The location of invariant tori for a two-dimensional Hamiltonian mapping exhibiting mixed phase space is discussed. The phase space of the mapping shows a large chaotic sea surrounding periodic islands and limited by a set of invariant tori. Given the mapping considered is parameterised by an exponent γ in one of the dynamical variables, a connection with the standard mapping near a transition from local to global chaos is used to estimate the position of the invariant tori limiting the size of the chaotic sea for different values of the parameter γ. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. We consider a family of two-dimensional nonlinear area-preserving mappings that generalize the Chirikov standard map and model a variety of periodically forced systems. The action variable diffuses in increments whose phase is controlled by a negative power of the action and hence effectively uncorrelated for small actions, leading to a chaotic sea in phase space. For larger values of the action the phase space is mixed and contains a family of elliptic islands centered on periodic orbits and invariant Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) curves. The transport of particles along the phase space is considered by starting an ensemble of particles with a very low action and letting them evolve in the phase until they reach a certain height h. For chaotic orbits below the periodic islands, the survival probability for the particles to reach h is characterized by an exponential function, well modeled by the solution of the diffusion equation. On the other hand, when h reaches the position of periodic islands, the diffusion slows markedly. We show that the diffusion coefficient is scaling invariant with respect to the control parameter of the mapping when h reaches the position of the lowest KAM island. © 2013 American Physical Society.

A rescale of the phase space for a family of two-dimensional, nonlinear Hamiltonian mappings was made by using the location of the first invariant Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) curve. Average properties of the phase space are shown to be scaling invariant and with different scaling times. Specific values of the control parameters are used to recover the Kepler map and the mapping that describes a particle in a wave packet for the relativistic motion. The phase space observed shows a large chaotic sea surrounding periodic islands and limited by a set of invariant KAM curves whose position of the first of them depends on the control parameters. The transition from local to global chaos is used to estimate the position of the first invariant KAM curve, leading us to confirm that the chaotic sea is scaling invariant. The different scaling times are shown to be dependent on the initial conditions. The universality classes for the Kepler map and mappings with diverging angles in the limit of vanishing action are defined. © 2013 Published by Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper we present a set of generic results on Hamiltonian non-linear dynamics. We show the necessary conditions for a Hamiltonian system to present a non-twist scenario and from that we introduce the isochronous resonances. The generality of these resonances is shown from the Hamiltonian given by the Birkhof-Gustavson normal form, which can be considered a toy model, and from an optic system governed by the non-linear map of the annular billiard. We also define a special kind of transport barrier called robust torus. The meanders and shearless curves are also presented and we show the most robust shearless barrier associated with the rotation numbers.

Starting out with an anomaly free lagrangian formulation for chiral scalars, which includes a Wess-Zumino term (to cancel the anomaly), we formulate the corresponding hamiltonian problem. Then we use the (quantum) Siegel invariance to choose a particular solution, which turns out to coincide with the one obtained by Floreanini and Jackiw. © 1988.

Bloch and Wannier functions of the Kohn type for a quite general one-dimensional Hamiltonian with inversion symmetry are studied. Important clarifications on null minigaps and the symmetry of those functions are given, with emphasis on the Kronig-Penney model. The lack of a general selection rule on the miniband index for optical transitions between edge states in semiconductor superlattices is discussed. A direct method for the calculation of Wannier-Kohn functions is presented.

The problem of a spinless particle subject to a general mixing of vector and scalar inversely linear potentials in a two-dimensional world is analyzed. Exact bounded solutions are found in closed form by imposing boundary conditions on the eigenfunctions which ensure that the effective Hamiltonian is Hermitian for all the points of the space. The nonrelativistic limit of our results adds a new support to the conclusion that even-parity solutions to the nonrelativistic one-dimensional hydrogen atom do not exist. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. A semi-analytical approach is proposed to study the rotational motion of an artificial satellite, under the influence of torque due to the solar radiation pressure, and taking into account the influence of Earth's shadow. Using Andoyer variables the equations for the rotational motion are presented in extended Hamiltonian form. In order to get a solution for the state variables close to an actual motion, the considered model for the shadow function takes into account physical and geometric factors and three specific regions: shadow, penumbra and full light. A mapping for the shadow function is proposed and a semi-analytical process is applied. When the satellite is totally illuminated or it is inside the penumbra, a known analytical solution is used to compute the satellite's attitude. A numerical simulation shows, when the penumbra region is included, the attenuation of the rotational motion during the transition from the shadow to the illuminate region and vice versa. A first order analytical model for optimal small amplitude attitude maneuvers of spacecraft with cylindrical symmetry in an elliptical orbits is presented. The optimization problem is formulated as a Mayer problem with the control torques provided by a power limited propulsion system. The state is defined by Seffet-Andoyer's variables and the control by the components of the propulsive torques. The Pontryagin Maximum Principle is applied to the problem and the optimal torques are given explicitly in Serret-Andoyer's variables and their adjoints. For small amplitude attitude maneuvers, the optimal Hamiltonian function is linearized around a reference attitude. A complete first order analytical solution is obtained by simple quadrature and is expressed through a linear algebraic system involving the initial values of the adjoint variables. A numerical solution is obtained by taking the Euler angles formulation of the problem, solving the two-point boundary problem through the shooting method, and, then, determining the Serret-Andoyer variables through Serret-Andoyer transformation. Numerical results show that the first order solution provides a good approximation to the optimal control law and also that is possible to establish an optimal control law for the artificial satellite's attitude. Three sets of non-singular canonical variables for the rotational motion are analyzed. These sets are useful when the angle between z-axis of a coordinate system fixed in artificial satellite ( here defined by the directions of principal moments of inertia of the satellite) and the rotational angular momentum vector is zero or when the angle between Z-inertial axis and rotational angular momentum vector is zero. The goal of this paper is to compare all these sets and to determine the benefits of their uses. With this objective, the dynamical equations of each set were derived, when mean hamiltonian associate with the gravity gradient torque is included. For the torque-free rotational motion, analytical solutions are computed for symmetrical satellite for each set of variables. When the gravity gradient torque is included, an analytical solution is shown for one of the sets and a numerical solution is obtained for one of the other sets. By this analysis we can conclude that: the dynamical equation for the first set is simple but it has neither clear geometrical nor physical meaning; the other sets have geometrical and physical meaning but their dynamical equations are more complex.
