Structural effects of lithium additive on 0.9PMN-0.1PT powders prepared by Ti-modified columbite route were studied. The substitution of Li+ ions for Mg2+ ions in the B-site sub-lattice of 0.9PMN-0.1PT perovskite structure was explained in terms of lead and oxygen vacancies generation originated as consequence of the ionic compensation of negatively charged Li'(Mg) sites. The rise in mass transport as consequence of the increasing of Pb2+ and O2- vacancies produces more agglomerated particles during the powder synthesis and changes the mechanical characteristics between grain and grain boundary of sintered ceramic. The relation between K-m and T-m values, the difference between ionic radii of B cation and the molar volume were used to explain the changes in the relaxor behavior and diffusiveness of phase transition as function of lithium doping, which are corroborated by the results obtained through the ferroelectric characterization.

CaBi2Nb2O9 (CBNO) thin films were deposited on platinum-coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method, and were annealed in air and in an oxygen atmosphere. The structure, surface morphology and electrical properties of CBNO thin films have been investigated. The presence of an oxygen atmosphere during crystallization of the films affected the structure perfection and morphology, as well as ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. A reduction in P-r and piezoelectric coefficient, an increase of V-c and displacement of the Curie point is evident in the films crystallized in an oxygen atmosphere. The impact of exposure to the oxygen atmosphere on the creation of defects caused by bismuth and oxygen vacancies between layers was also investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The nature of defects in polycrystalline Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) thin films with x=0.00, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 was evaluated by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements. The influence of oxygen vacancies and substitution of Bi for La atoms were discussed. In the BLT thin films, it was found that the oxygen ions at the metal-oxygen octahedral were much more stable than those at the [Bi2O2] layers. on the other hand, for Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) thin film, oxygen vacancies could be induced both at the titanium-oxygen octahedral and at the [Bi2O2] layers. The oxygen-vacancy defect pairs determined in BIT and Bi3.75La0.25Ti3O12 (BLT025) can pin the polarization of surrounding lattices leading to fatigue of capacitors. Meanwhile, the concentration of similar defect pairs is relatively low in heavily doped BIT films and then good fatigue resistance is observed.

The effect of calcination temperature during the formation of the solid solution Sn(0.9)Ti(0.1)O(2) doped with 1.00 mol % CoO and 0.05 mol % Nb(2)O(5) is presented. The structural characteristics of this system were studied using X-ray diffraction, and the changes in phase formation were analyzed using the Rietveld method. With an increase in calcination temperature, there is increasing miscibility of Ti into the (Ti,Sn)O(2) phase and near 1000 degrees C, and the remaining TiO(2) (anatase) was transformed into the rutile phase. The sintering process, monitored using dilatometry, suggests two mass transport mechanisms, one activated close to 900 degrees C associated with the presence of TiO(2) (anatase) and the second mechanism, occurring between 1200 and 1300 degrees C, is attributed to a faster grain boundary diffusion caused by oxygen vacancies. In this work, a new organic-inorganic hybrid material has been synthesized by the incorporation of croconate ion into a calcium polyphosphate coacervate. The hybrid so obtained was characterized by means of electronic and vibrational spectroscopies. The material is a homogeneous mixture described by a structural model, which includes helical chains of polyphosphate ions, where the calcium ion occupies the internal vacancies of the structure. The croconate ion appears to be occupying the regions outside the polymeric structure, surrounded by several water molecules. The electronic spectrum of the incorporated material shows a broad band peaking at the same wavelength region (363 nm) observed for the aqueous solution of croconate ion, and manifesting the Jahn-Teller effect as evidenced by the doublet structure of the band. The infrared spectrum is widely dominated by the absorption bands of the polyphosphate ion and the appearance of the carbonyl stretching band at ca. 1550 cm(-1) indicates the presence of croconate ion incorporated in the structure. The Raman spectrum of the material shows several vibrational bands related to the oxocarbon moiety; most of them are shifted in comparison with the free ion. These shifts can be understood in terms of strong hydrogen bonding interactions between water molecules and the oxocarbon moiety. The low temperature methodology proposed here can be well used in the preparation of new phosphate glasses containing organic moieties opening the route to an entirely new class of hybrid glasses. Kinetics of short-range ordering (SRO) in Ag with 21, 23 and 28 at% Zn is investigated by residual resistometry during isochronal and isothermal heat treatment for different states of post-deformation defect annealing after cold-rolling to about 30 and 60% thickness reduction. Resistivity changes due to pure ordering can be separated from the as-measured total resistivity change which includes defect annealing. Although the initial state of SRO of the as-rolled material can be estimated to be comparably low, for as-rolled and partially annealed states by appropriate thermal treatment evolution of SRO is achieved which corresponds quite well to that of recrystallized samples. It is observed, however, that quenched-in surplus vacancies contribute considerably to the ordering process for the recrystallized state and that this contribution is still increased by the grain growth during the final stage of annealing. It therefore turns out that SRO-kinetics under equilibrium vacancy conditions can be better observed in a state of post-deformation annealing, for which deformation induced point defects are annealed-out, but a relatively high dislocation density is still present to act as a vacancy sink. The dielectric properties of (Ba, Sr)TiO3 films were found to be remarkably sensitive to the postannealing treatment atmosphere. This study demonstrates that postannealing in an oxygen atmosphere increases the dielectric relaxation phenomenon and that postannealing in a nitrogen atmosphere produces a slight dielectric relaxation. Such dependence of the dielectric relaxation was related both to oxygen vacancies and to the presence of negatively charged oxygen, trapped at the grain boundary and/or at the electrode/dielectric film interface. The sintering of ZrO2. MgO . ZnO powder has been investigated by TMA (Thermal Mechanical Analyser) and its phases analysed by XRD (X-ray diffraction pattern). The data obtained from sintering was studied by the Bannister equation and its dominant sintering mechanism was calculated. It was observed that the ZnO addition in the ZrO2. MgO solid solution lead to increased zirconia stabilization, According to the vacancies model, the ZnO addition did not lead to zirconia phases stabilization (PSZ). An analysis of the rate control in the initial stage of the sintering (region I) showed a mechanism of volume diffusion type. In other regions (regions II and III), the grain growth did lead to the Bannister equation deviation, which was observed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). These results were different from those demonstrated by other authors who studied the ZrO2. Y2O3 solid solution and obtained a mechanism of grain boundary diffusion type. The cubic perovskite related material CaCu3Ti4O12 has attracted a great deal of attention due to the high values of the static dielectric constant, of order 104, approximately constant in the temperature range 100-600 K. The substitution of Ca by Cd results in a similar temperature dependence but a static dielectric constant more than one order of magnitude lower. A theoretical electronic structure study is performed on CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) and CdCu3Ti4O12 (CdCTO) using a tight binding with overlap method. Although the calculations are performed in a paramagnetic configuration, excellent agreement with experiment was found for the calculated band gap of CCTO. In spite of the fact that the band structures of both systems look practically the same, a significant difference is found in the calculated bond strength of Ca-O and Cd-O pairs, driven by the presence of Ti, with Ca-O interaction in CCTO loosened with respect to Cd-O interaction in the cadmium compound. It is suggested that O vacancies are more easily formed in CCTO, this being related to the lower electronegativity of Ca as compared to Cd. The formation of oxygen vacancies could be the origin of the difference in the static dielectric constant of the two compounds.

A combined experimental and theoretical study was conducted to analyze the photoluminescence (PL) properties of ordered and disordered CaWO4 (CW) and CaMoO4 (CM) powders. Two mechanisms were found to be responsible for photoluminescence emission in CW and CM powders. The first one, in the disordered powders, was caused by oxygen complex vacancies [MO3 center dot V-O(x)], [MO3 center dot V-O(center dot)] and [MO3 center dot V-O(center dot center dot)], where M=W or Mo, which leads to additional levels in the band gap. The second mechanism, in ordered powders, was caused by an intrinsic slight distortion of the [WO4] or [MoO4] tetrahedral in the short range. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Photoluminescence (PL) behavior of SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) powders was explained by means of beta-Bi2O3 phase on the SBN lattice. Oxygen vacancies and recombination of electrons holes in the valence band lead to the formation of [NbO5 center dot V-O(x)], [NbO5 center dot V-O(center dot)] and [NbO5 center dot V-O(center dot center dot)] complex clusters which are the main reason for the PL at room temperature. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy were used as tools to investigate the structural changes in SBN lattice allowing to correlate [NbO5 center dot V-O(center dot)]/[NbO6](') ratio with the evolution of the visible PL emission in the SBN powders.
