Bilateral common carotid occlusion (BCO) over a period of 60 s in conscious rats produces a biphasic presser response, consisting of an early (peak) and late (plateau) phase. In this study we investigated 1) the effects of lesions of the commissural nucleus of the solitary tract (commNTS) on the cardiovascular responses produced by BCO in conscious rats and 2) the autonomic and humoral mechanisms activated to produce the presser response to BCO in sham- and commNTS-lesioned rats. Both the peak and plateau of the presser response produced by BCO increased in commNTS-lesioned rats despite the impairment of chemoreflex responses induced by intravenous potassium cyanide. In sham rats sympathetic blockade with intravenous prazosin and metoprolol, but not vasopressin receptor blockade with the Manning compound, reduced both components of BCO. In commNTS-lesioned rats the sympathetic blockade or vasopressin receptor blockade reduced both components of BCO. The results showed 1) the sympathetic nervous system, but not vasopressin, is important for the presser response to BCO during 60 s in conscious sham rats; 2) in commNTS-lesioned rats, despite chemoreflex impairment, BCO produces an increased presser response dependent on sympathetic activity associated with vasopressin release; and 3) the increment in the presser response to BCO in commNTS-lesioned rats seems to depend only on vasopressin secretion.

Cholinergic and adrenergic agonists and antagonists were injected directly into the subfornical organ (SFO), via implanted cannulae, and the volume of water ingested was recorded over a period of 1 hour after injection. Application of 2 nmol carbachol caused intense water intake in 100% of the animals (8.78±0.61 ml), with a very short intake latency. When the 2 nmol carbachol dose was preceded by increased doses of atropine, a progressive reduction in water intake was observed, with complete blockage of the thirst-inducing response to carbachol at the 20 nmol dose level with atropine. Followed by several doses of hexamethonium, the water intake caused by application of 2 nmol carbachol was reduced, although the response was not totally blocked. Injection of 80 nmol of nicotine had a significant thirst-inducing inducing effect in 50% of the animals studied (1.06±0.18 ml) and increase in water intake was further reduced by application of increased doses of hexamethonium. Raising the dose levels of noradrenaline into th SFO caused an increase in water intake although to a lesser degree than was observed after carbachol injection. When the 40 nmol dose of noradrenaline was preceded by increased doses of propranolol (5 to 40 nmol), there was a gradual reduction in water intake, with total blockage at the 40 nmol dose. Application of phentolamine in doses of 10 to 80 nmol caused no reduction in water intake after 40 nmol of noradrenaline. Application of isoproterenol at doses from 20 to 160 nmol into the SFO caused a dosedependent increase in water intake which was blocked by previous applications of propranolol. These results support the hypothesis that the water intake caused by chemical stimulation of the SFO is mainly due to muscarinic cholinergic receptors, although the influence of nicotinic receptors or participation of adrenergic mediation should not be ruled out. © 1984.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been shown to modulate neuronal synaptic transmission and may play a role on the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system. In this study we investigated the effects produced by hydrogen peroxide (H 2O 2) injected alone or combined with the anti-oxidant agent N-acetil-l-cysteine (NAC) or catalase into the fourth brain ventricle (4th V) on mean arterial pressure and heart rate of conscious rats. Moreover the involvement of the autonomic nervous system on the cardiovascular responses to H 2O 2 into the 4th V was also investigated. Male Holtzman rats (280-320 g) with a stainless steel cannula implanted into the 4th V and polyethylene cannulas inserted into the femoral artery and vein were used. Injections of H 2O 2 (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 μmol/0.2 μL, n = 6) into the 4th V produced transient (for 10 min) dose-dependent pressor responses. The 1.0 and 1.5 μmol doses of H 2O 2 also produced a long lasting bradycardia (at least 24 h with the high dose of H 2O 2). Prior injection of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (250 nmol/1 μL/rat) into the 4th V blockade the pressor response and attenuated the bradycardic response to H 2O 2 (1 μmol/0.5 μL/rat, n = 7) into the 4th V. Intravenous (i.v.) atropine methyl bromide (1.0 mg/kg, n = 11) abolished the bradycardia but did not affect the pressor response to H 2O 2. Prazosin hydrochloride (1.0 mg/kg, n = 6) i.v. abolished the pressor response but did not affect the bradycardia. The increase in the catalase activity (500 UEA/1 μL/rat injected into the 4th V) also abolished both, pressor and bradycardic responses to H 2O 2. The results suggest that increased ROS availability into 4th V simultaneously activate sympathetic and parasympathetic outflow inducing pressor and bradycardic responses. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Introduction: Spirituality/religiosity is associated to well-being. In this article, we describe the association between spirituality/religiosity and cardiovascular system. Materials and methods: We performed searches using Medline, SciELO, Lilacs and Cochrane databases using crossing between the keywords “spirituality,” “cardiovascular system,” “parasympathetic nervous system,” and “sympathetic nervous system.”Results: The electronic search yielded 65 references by crossing the terms “spirituality” and “cardiovascular system.” Among these, the first round of elimination resulted in exclusion of 55 titles and abstracts that were not clearly related to the subject of the review. The titles of the remaining 10 abstracts were submitted to a final evaluation that accounted for the inclusion criteria. An investigation into the reference lists confirmed the absence of relevant documents. Summaries of the analysed studies were selected. Discussion: Among 10 studies selected, 8 of them indicated that spirituality/religiosity is very important for the cardiovascular system, whereas only 2 found no significant association between the two variables in women. Conclusion: We suggest that spirituality/religiosity is an alternative and non-pharmacological therapy for cardiovascular disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) could be investigated in a noninvasive way by the heart rate variability analysis (HRV) which has contributed to several health areas such as physiotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To gather information regarding the use of HRV on physiotherapy aims at providing an update of the findings for the area on journals of national circulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The journals of national circulation classified as greater than B2 or B2 and with free access and complete texts in some internet sites were searched on 21 area WebQualis resulting on selection of Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia, Fisioterapia e Pesquisa and Fisioterapia em Movimento using the keywords: autonomic nervous system, sympathetic nervous system, physiotherapy and heart rate variability. RESULTS: The search resulted in 19 articles being 17 clinical trials and two case reports. CONCLUSION: The HRV has been used as a resource of interventions evaluation, as pathological conditions common to clinical practice investigation and to physiological conditions interpretation in physiotherapy. The HRV is principally used to the cardiorespiratory specialty of physiotherapy.
