Bathymetric distribution and recruitment of the spider crab Libinia spinosa H. Milne Edwards 1834 in the Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba regions, northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil (Crustacea, Brachyura, Majoidea, Pisidae)

The objective of this study was to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of Libinia spinosa H. MILNE EDWARDS 1834 on unconsolidated sublittoral bottoms in two regions off the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, and to analyze the influence of environmental factors on the occurrence of this species and observe the recruitment pattern of its young. Crabs were collected monthly (July 2001 through June 2003) at depths of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 In, from a fishing boat equipped with two double-rig nets. Samples of water and sediment were collected for analysis of environmental factors. A total of 2112 spider crabs was obtained (701 juveniles and 1411 adults). The highest abundance was observed at depths of 20 and 25 m, in both regions. These localities were characterized by substrate composed of very fine sand and silt-clay. In regard to the temporal distribution, juveniles and adults predominated in the summer and winter months respectively. From these results, one can infer that the distribution of L. spinosa is related to environmental factors favorable for its life cycle; sediment type is the factor which most strongly determines its presence. © E. Liberdade hipotecada: o processo de independência cubana na imprensa brasileira (1895-1902)

O autor realiza uma detalhada análise da repercussão do processo de independência cubana na imprensa brasileira, por meio do exame dos periódicos Jornal do Commercio e O Estado de S. Paulo no período compreendido entre 1895 e 1902. Os posicionamentos e opiniões emitidos pelos jornais foram observados a partir de uma perspectiva comparada e com base na configuração política e ideológica de cada veículo. O livro também investiga, ainda levando em conta o posicionamento desses jornais, as propostas ou opiniões acerca da inserção do Brasil no âmbito das relações políticas internacionais, sobretudo no que diz respeito aos Estados Unidos. À época, este país começavam a despontar como uma das grandes potências políticas e econômicas do planeta e a consolidar um papel hegemônico nas Américas. A história da independência cubana é a mais longa do continente, e uma das mais dramáticas: Cuba chegou tarde à independência, em comparação com os outros países hispano-americanos e mesmo assim não a conquistou por completo, pois ficou por um longo período sob a tutela política dos Estados Unidos. O extenso processo de independência de Cuba culminou com mudanças importantes para a América Latina, marcando o fim da presença colonial espanhola no continente e abrindo caminho para uma nova fase da política externa dos EUA para a região, de caráter francamente imperialista

Estudos sobre o subdesenvolvimento capitalista: as teorias de Paul A. Baran, Andre G. Frank e Ruy M. Marini

The underdevelopment is a high relevance subject in researches and studies for the general social sciences. In this monographic paper, the marxist analysis perspective of the phenomenon approached is considerate of great importance to make a deep overlook, historical and structural, about the origins and solutions possibilities for the issues caused by it over several countries. Has been done here a theoretical analysis of three studious marxist authors of the subject: Paul A. Baran, Andre G. Frank and Ruy M. Marini. How they thought underdevelopment? Which were their scientific contributions to this theme? The main goal of this paper is to do a comparative analysis of these authors, synthesize their considerations about the underdevelopment issues and organized a theoretical and conceptual framework for a better understanding of the matters in capitalist development/underdevelopment relationship. To accomplish that, we elected four variables that supports this comparative exercises, they are: the origins, the causes, the consequences and the way-out of the underdevelopment conditions. This monographic work was made through studies of some principals books and articles of the cited authors as well as the reading of others authors that commented their theories and concepts. The considerations about the underdevelopment vitality under a world capitalist logical, rescues the debate on the transformation of this entire society project for another, been this movement the only way possible to reverse the path of the world people’s history and the major part of humankind that still lives into the “necessity kingdom”

Tradução anotada, autor-tradutor invisível: Richard Francis Burton na Brasiliana

The aim of this paper is to analyze the translation of the work by the translator-traveller Richard Francis Burton, Explorations of the Highlands of the Brazil, with a full account of the gold and diamond mines, made by Américo Jacobina Lacombe, trying to relate the work of the latter to the editorial goals of the Brasiliana Collection. As a subseries of the Biblioteca Pedagógica Brasileira [Brazilian Pedagogical Library] published by Companhia Editora Nacional, Brasiliana was conceived in agreement with the 1930s and 1940s policies to expand lay education and make it possible for Brazilians to get to better know the greatness of their country. The paper will focus on the numerous translator’s notes, since many of them reveal Lacombe’s didactic purpose of informing readers about Brazilian history and geography. The analysis also examines the effacement of Burton’s translations from Portuguese into English in his book.

Respiratory responses of the tropical millipede Plusioporus setiger (Broelemann, 1902) (Spirostreptida: Spirostreptidae) to normoxic and hypoxic conditions

1. 1. Oxygen consumption and its relationship to declining oxygen tension was examined in the tropical spirotreptid millipede, Plusioporus setiger. 2. 2. At 25°C and normoxia, the allometric equations relating the weight-specific oxygen consumption rates and body weight were V ̇O2 = 2.1266 × W-53 for males, and V ̇O2 = 2.0915 × W-64 for females, but no significant difference was detected from the b-values. 3. 3. Plusioporus setiger regulated respiration down to 35.40 mmHg O2 when suddenly exposed to a lowered oxygen tension, or 17.70 mmHg O2, when examined in a stepwise declining oxygen tension. 4. 4. O2 dependence indices ( K1 K2) were relatively low, also expressing regulation, but no relation to size (weight) was recorded. 5. 5. After exposure to hypoxia, P. setiger showed a typical pattern of under repayment, on the return to normoxia. © 1987.
