It is known that chromium electroplating is related to the reduction in the fatigue strength of base metal. However, chromium results in protection against wear and corrosion combined with chemical resistance and good lubricity. Environmental requirements are an important point to be considered in the search for possible alternatives to hard chrome plating. Aircraft landing gear manufactures are considering WC thermal spray coating applied by the high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) process an alternative candidate, which shows performance at least comparable to results, obtained for hard chrome plating. The aim of this study is to compare the influence of WC-17Co and WC-10Co-4Cr coatings applied by HVOF process and hard chromium electroplating on the fatigue strength of AISI 4340 steel, with and without shot peening. S-N curves were obtained in axial fatigue test for base material, chromium plated and tungsten carbide coated specimens. Tungsten carbide thermal spray coating results in higher fatigue strength when compared to hard chromium electroplated. Shot peening prior to thermal spraying showed to be an excellent alternative to increase fatigue strength of AISI 4340 steel. Experimental data showed higher axial fatigue and corrosion resistance in salt fog exposure for samples WC-10Co-4Cr HVOF coated when compared with WC-17Co. Fracture surface analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated the existence of a uniform coverage of nearly all substrates. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Recovered substrates have been extensively used in the aerospace field. Cadmium electroplating has been widely applied to promote protective coatings in aeronautical components, resulting in excellent corrosion protection combined with a good performance in cyclic loading. Ecological considerations allied to the increasing demands for corrosion resistance have resulted in the search for possible alternatives. Zinc-nickel (Zn-Ni) alloys have received considerable interest recently, because these coatings show advantages such as a good resistance to white and red rust, high plating rates, and acceptance in the market. In this study, the effect of electroplated Zn-Ni coatings on AISI 4340 high-strength steel was analyzed for rotating bending fatigue strength, corrosion, and adhesion resistance. The compressive residual stress field was measured by x-ray diffraction prior to fatigue tests. Optical microscopy documented coating thickness, adhesion characteristics, and coverage extent for nearly all substrates. Fractured fatigue specimens were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three different Zn-Ni coating thicknesses were tested, and comparisons with the rotating bending fatigue data from electroplated Cd specimens were performed. Experimental results differentiated the effects of the various coatings on the AISI 4340 steel behaviour when submitted to fatigue testing and the influence of coating thickness on the fatigue strength.

Background: the aim of this study was to evaluate the progression of experimental peri-implantitis in dogs using implants with different surface coatings. Methods: Thirty-six dental implants with four different surface coatings, commercially pure titanium (cpTi), titanium plasma-sprayed (TPS), hydroxyapatite (HA), and acid-etched (AE), were placed in six mongrel dogs. Five months after implantation, peri-implantitis was induced by cotton ligatures to facilitate plaque accumulation for 60 days. After 60 days, the ligatures were removed and supragingival plaque control was initiated for 12 months. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), vertical bone level (VBL), horizontal bone level (HBL), and mobility were obtained at baseline, and 20, 40, 60 (acute phase), and 425 days (chronic phase) after ligature removal. Results: PD and CAL changed around all implant surfaces after ligature placement (P < 0.0001). However, the means of PD and CAL were not statistically significant among the different surfaces (P > 0.05). The range of CAL variation, calculated between baseline and 60 days (acute phase) and between 60 and 425 days (chronic phase), decreased (P < 0.05). Bone loss increased during the entire experiment (P < 0.0001). The HA surface showed the greatest bone loss measurement (5.06 +/- 0.38 mm) and the TPS showed the smallest bone loss (4.27 +/- 0.62 mm). However, statistical significance was not assessed for different coatings (P > 0.05).Conclusions: the clinical data at the initial phase showed rapid and severe peri-implant tissue breakdown. However, removal of ligatures did not convert the acute destructive peri-implant phase to a non-aggressive lesion and the progression of peri-implantitis was observed at chronic phase. The,experimental peri-implantitis in dogs may be a useful model to evaluate the progression of peri-implantitis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of lethal photosensitization and guided bone regeneration (GBR) on the treatment of ligature-induced peri-implantitis in different implant surfaces. The treatment outcome was evaluated by clinical and histometric methods. A total of 40 dental implants with four different surface coatings (10 commercially pure titanium surface (cpTi); 10 titanium plasma-sprayed (TPS); 10 acid-etched surface; 10 surface-oxide sandblasted) were inserted into five mongrel dogs. After 3 months, the animals with ligature-induced peri-implantitis were subjected to surgical treatment using a split-mouth design. The controls were treated by debridment and GBR, while the test side received an additional therapy with photosensitization, using a GaAlAs diode laser, with a wavelength of 830 nm and a power output of 50 mW for 80 s (4 J/cm(2)), and sensitized toluidine blue O (100 mu g/ml). The animals were sacrificed 5 months after therapy. The control sites presented an earlier exposition of the membranes on all coating surfaces, while the test group presented a higher bone height gain. Re-osseointegration ranged between 41.9% for the cpTi surface and 31.19% for the TPS surface in the test sites; however differences were not achieved between the surfaces. The lethal photosensitization associated with GBR allowed for better re-osseointegration at the area adjacent to the peri-implant defect regardless of the implant surface.

Comparative wear and corrosion properties of Cr3C2-NiCr (CC-TS) (a high-velocity oxyfuel [HVOF]) and hard chromium (HC) coating's obtained on a steel substrate have been studied. The structural characterization was done before and after measurements by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and scanning white light interferometry. Wear and corrosion properties were evaluated by ball on disk (ASTM G99-90), rubber wheel (ASTM G65-91), and electrochemical measurements of open circuit and polarization curves. The best corrosion and wear resistance was for the CC-TS obtained by HVOF. The open-circuit potential values measured for both samples after 18 h of immersion we're: -0.240 and -0.550 V, respectively, for CC-TS and HC, versus Ag/AgCl,KClsat. Three orders of magnitude lower volume loss were found for CC-TS (HVOF) after friction tests compared with HC.

The influence of heat-treatments on the electrochemical behavior of thermal spray Cr3C2-NiCr coatings prepared by high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) was studied in NaCl solution, at 25 degrees C, using open-circuit potential (E-OC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Coating characterization were performed before and after the heat-treatments and electrochemical tests by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Auger electron spectroscopy. In addition to the changes in the original powder composition occurring during HVOF process, heat-treatment performed at 450 degrees C caused no significant changes in electrochemical response compared with untreated sample, and at 760 degrees C the main difference was the formation of a thin and defective layer of Cr2O3 at the coating surface, which increased the total impedance at the first day of immersion. Higher influence on the electrochemical was noted for samples treated at 880 degrees C, which also showed higher E-OC and total impedance, and lower corrosion current. This behavior was interpreted considering the formation of a chromium oxide layer on the coating surface, dissolution and decomposition of smaller carbide particles and their surface enrichment with Cr due to C diffusion and dissolution into the matrix, and possible Ni, Cr, and Fe diffusion to coating/substrate interface. Titanium alloys are hoped to be used much more for applications as implant materials in the medical and dental fields because of their basic properties, such as biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and specific strength compared with other metallic implant materials. Thus, the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy that has recently been developed for biomedical use, that is, primarily developed for orthopaedic use, is to be studied in this paper, for application in dental implants. The biocompatibility test in vivo was carried out in dogs and the osseointegration was verified through histological analysis of the samples of the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy with and without hydroxyapatite coating that were inserted in the alveoli. Within the controlled conditions the samples did not show any toxic effects on the cells. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Electro-optical properties of sol-gel derived 2 mol% antimony or niobium doped tin dioxide films have been measured. The electron density has been calculated considering all the relevant scattering mechanisms and experimental conductivity data measured in the range -197 to 25 degrees C. The results support the hypothesis that both ionised impurity scattering and grain boundary scattering have comparable effects in the resistivity of coatings, for free electron density congruent to 5 x 10(18) cm(-3). We have measured variation of photoconductivity excitation with wavelength using xenon and deuterium lamp as light sources. Results show that the main band in the photoconductivity spectrum is dependent on the spectral light source emission, the excitation peak reaching 5 eV (deuterium lamp). This band is due to the recombination process involving oxygen species and photogenerated electron-hole pairs. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work the technique of X-ray reflectometry was applied to study zirconiumsulfate films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating process on a borosilicate glass surface. The influence of withdrawal speed and temperature of thermal treatment on the film structure are analyzed. The thermal evolution of the density and thickness of the film was compared with these properties measured for a monolithic xerogel by helium picnometry and thermomechanical analysis. The fitting of experimental curves by classical reflectivity model showed the presence of an additional layer at the top surface of the coating. Layer thickness increases with increase of withdrawal speed in agreement with the Landau-Levich model. The apparent and real densities are similar for coatings fired below 400 degrees C, which shows that the films are free of pores. The shrinkage during firing is anisotropic, occurring essentially perpendicular to the coating surface. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: the purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the healing potential and reosseointegration in ligature-induced peri-implantitis defects adjacent to various dental implant surfaces following lethal photosensitization. Methods: A total of 36 dental implants with 4 different surface coatings (9 commercially pure titanium surface [CPTi]; 9 titanium plasma-sprayed [TPS]; 9 hydroxyapatite [HA]; and 9 acid-etched [AE]) were inserted in 6 male mongrel dogs 3 months after extraction of mandibular premolars. After a 2-month period of ligature-induced peri-implantitis and 12 months of natural peri-implantitis progression, only 19 dental implants remained. The dogs underwent surgical debridement of the remaining dental implant sites and lethal photosensitization by combination of toluidine blue O (100 mug/ml) and irradiation with diode laser. All exposed dental implant surfaces and bone craters were meticulously cleaned by mechanical means, submitted to photodynamic therapy, and guided bone regeneration (GBR) using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes. Five months later, biopsies of the implant sites were dissected and prepared for ground sectioning and analysis. Results: the percentage of bone fill was HA: 48.28 +/- 15.00; TPS: 39.54 +/- 12.34; AE: 26.88 +/- 22.16; and CPTi: 26.70 +/- 16.50. The percentage of reosseointegration was TPS: 25.25 +/- 11.96; CPTi: 24.91 +/- 17.78; AE: 17.30 +/- 15.41; and HA: 15.83 +/- 9.64.Conclusion: These data suggest that lethal photosensitization may have potential in the treatment of peri-implantitis.

The X-ray reflectivity technique was applied in the study of tin oxide films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating on borosilicate glasses. The influence of the withdrawal speed and temperature of thermal treatment on the film structure was analyzed. We have compared the thermal evolution of the density and the shrinkage of the films with these properties measured for the monolithic xerogel by helium picnometry and thermomechanical analysis. In agreement with the Landau-Levich model, the layer thickness increases by increasing the withdrawal speed. Nevertheless, it decreases with the increase of the thermal treatment temperature, due to the densification process. The values of apparent density are smaller than the skeletal density, which shows that the films are porous. The comparison between the film and the monolith indicates that shrinkage during firing is anisotropic, occurring essentially perpendicular to the coating surface.

Polysiloxane hybrid films were deposited on stainless steel by dip-coating using a sol prepared by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS), followed by radical polymerization of methacrylic moieties. The TEOS/MPTS ratio was chosen equal to 2 and the Ce/Si ratio varied between 0.01 and 0.1. The effects of cerium concentration and valence (Ce(III) and Ce (IV)) on the structural features of polysiloxane films were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The corrosion protection of stainless steel by the hybrid coatings was investigated by XPS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curves, after immersion in saline and acid solutions. The NMR results have shown for Ce(IV) doped films a high degree of polycondensation of up to 89%. Electrochemical analysis has evidenced that hybrid films with the lowest Ce concentration act as an efficient diffusion barrier by increasing the corrosion resistance and reducing the current densities up to 3 orders of magnitude compared to bare stainless steel. The analysis of structural effects induced by Ce(III) and Ce(IV) species, performed by XPS, indicates that the improved corrosion protection of Ce(IV) doped films might be mainly related to the enhanced polymerization of siloxane groups. The electrochemical behavior of a coating of cobalt oxide on cold-rolled steel in alkaline sodium sulfate was Studied using the electrochemical techniques of open-circuit potential measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The coating was prepared at different annealing temperatures ranging from 350 to 750 degreesC and characterized by SEM, EDX and XRD. Below 550 degreesC the composition of the coating was basically of Co3O4. At 750 degreesC CoO was formed and big cracks appeared on the film exposing an inner layer of iron oxides. Analysis of the EIS data is very difficult because of the complexity of the interface structure. It can be inferred that the charge transfer resistance of the coatings prepared at 350 and 450 C were higher than those for the coatings prepared at temperatures above 550 degreesC.
