Brazil’s transition from a political and legal system to a democracy was accompanied by numerous legal and institutional reforms. In a context of struggle towards a broad political participation in public policies and risen criticism towards state actions, the extent and effects of these reforms have not been sufficiently deep to impact the problems and redefine the agenda. The main goal of this academic research is to understand the resistance to change and new paradigms that define the broad agenda of public safety.

Análise dos fatores externos no desempenho do basquetebol

O presente estudo teve com objetivo analisar alguns fatores externos que podem interferir durante uma partida de basquetebol e tentar desvendar quais destes são encarados pelos jogadores como os que têm a maior influência durante o jogo. Buscamos através de um questionário, onde haviam oito questões, estudar a influência da torcida, dos pais, e do técnico com relação ao desempenho de jogadores de basquete da cidade de Rio Claro - SP. Foram entrevistados treze jovens do sexo masculino praticantes de basquetebol na cidade de Rio Claro - SP, na faixa etária de 15 a 17 anos, com tempo de pratica variando de um a quatro anos e treinando cinco vezes por semana. Os principais resultados obtidos foram: A maioria dos entrevistados respondeu que sofre uma influência negativa da torcida adversária; 46,15% dos entrevistados não sofrem nenhum tipo de influência devido à presença dos pais na torcida; A conduta do técnico durante os treinos e os jogos pode influenciar no resultado do jogo; 84,62% responderam que os árbitros podem ter seu desempenho diminuído com a pressão da torcida; A maioria dos entrevistados (69,24%) acha que o técnico, por estar junto da equipe durante os treinos e os jogos, tem uma influência maior no desempenho dos atletas.

Medicalização em um serviço público de Saúde Mental: um estudo sobre a prescrição de psicofármacos

News of the fifth version of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) bringing an enlarged listing of diagnostic possibilities has fomented discussion concerning the tendency, recognizable in contemporary psychiatric practices, of including ordinary suffering of everyday life in psychiatric diagnosis and submit same to psychopharmacological treatment. The present paper brings to this discussion data obtained from field research about the prescription of psychopharmacs in the psychiatric care of a public mental health service. The results reveal that the psychiatry of the service keeps practically all of its users under prescription, and that medical discharge is extremely rare. The paper organizes elements critical to this practice and concludes that due to its inadequacy as to the objectives of promotion of personalized care concerned with autonomy and citizenship, present in the current national guidelines for public policies in mental health.

Religião, política e eleições na Folha Universal

The Folha Universal, newspaper produced by the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Iurd, abbreviation in Portuguese for Universal Church of the Kingdom of God), reaches an average weekly circulation from 2.5 to 3.5 million copies. Studies indicate that the Folha Universal is not merely an institutional newspaper. It is systematically dedicated to be a source of political information to their readers, in order to publicize candidates and politicians who defend the Iurd’s proposals for the Brazilian public life. This paper describes results of an empirical study on the frames built by the Folha Universal about the social demands, economic and political governance considered as priorities to the public management by the Iurd around five themes of analysis: public safety; children and adolescents care; public health; environment; politics and economy. The results indicate that, as characteristics of the Folha Universal in the four months prior to the 2010 Brazilian elections, aspects that differ from those indicated by previous studies on the newspaper. Previously detected in the pages of Folha Universal as a mean for finding solutions to social problems, the theology of prosperity was in our sample replaced by the formulation of public policies.

DNA human identification for the family rights: one year of agreement between UNESP/laboratory of paternity and public defender service in São Paulo State

The universities have realized the importance of extending their knowledge to the population through the provision of services. Thus, this paper presents the data obtained in an agreement between UNESP/Laboratory of Paternity and Public Defender Service in São Paulo State to make DNA paternity tests.

Knowledge of professionals from public service on oral health promotion for babies

Health promotion seeks to integrate oral health practices to other public health, by building healthy public policy and the development of strategies directed to all people in the community. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge and actions on the infants’ oral health promotion by dentists, pediatricians and nurses. Were interviewed dentists (n=34), pediatricians (n=31) and nurses (n=26) from Basic Health Units, Family Health Units and Centers for Education and Recreation in Araraquara - SP about knowledge and actions on oral health promotion for infants, by filling out a pre-tested questionnaire. Data were analyzed by association tests. Generally, the professionals are aware of and perform actions on oral health promotion for infants. Most participants were female; mean age of 39.9 years, worked in Basic Health Units, had over 10 years of graduation, demonstrated knowledge on and considered oral health promotion in infants very important. The time since graduation and actions on oral health promotion for infants were associated (p<0.05) with issues concerning the use of dental floss. That most of the professionals who participated in this study know about, take actions on oral health promotion for infants and consider them crucial.
