The nonohmic electrical features of (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics, which have very strong gigantic dielectric is believed originate from potential barriers at the grain boundaries. In the present study, we used the admittance and impedance spectroscopy technique to investigate (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics with low nonohmic electrical properties. The study was conducted under two different conditions: on as-sintered ceramics and on ceramics thermally treated in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. The results confirm that thermal treatment in oxygen-rich atmospheres influence the nonohmic properties. Annealing at oxygen-rich atmospheres improve the nonohmic behavior and annealing at oxygen-poor atmospheres decrease the nonohmic properties, a behavior already reported for common metal oxide nonohmic devices and here firstly evidenced for the (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite related materials. The results show that oxygen also influences the capacitance values at low frequencies, a behavior that is indicative of the Schottky-type nature of the potential barrier.

The Indanthrene Olive Green B (C.I. Vat Green 3; C.I. 69500), VG3 dye, a vat dye bearing an anthraquinonoid group and a ketonic group, can be detected by differential pulse voltammetry in alkaline solution using glassy carbon electrode. on the adsorbed form the dyes are reduced into three cathodic steps at -0.54 V, -0.65 V and -0.93 V vs Ag/AgCl. The leuco form generated after previous electrolysis at controlled potential of -1 V can be detected by voltammetry due to its reoxidation peak at -0.08 V. An analytical method is proposed for determining the vat dye using modified glassy carbon electrode by electrochemical activation in alkaline medium. Linear relationship was observed between l(Pu) vs concentration from I X 10(-5) mol L-1 to 6.0 X 10(-4) mol L-1. The detection limit was calculated to be 9.3 X 10(-6) mol L-1. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The nonlinear refractive index, n(2), of films based on the new glass system Sb(2)O(3)-Sb(2)S(3) was measured at 1064 nm with laser pulses of 15 ps, using a single-beam nonlinear image technique in presence of a phase object. The films were prepared from bulk glasses by RF-sputtering. A large value of n(2) = 3 x 10-(15) m(2)/W, which is three orders of magnitude larger than for CS(2), was determined. The result shows the strong potential of antimony-sulfide glass films for integrated nonlinear optics. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the identification of a potential pheromone for Gnathotrichus materiarius (Fitch) (Col., Scolytidae). The population sex ratio is close to 1:1, and males initiate attacks on host trees. Headspace and hindgut samples from single males showed the presence of the putative pheromone 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol, sulcatol. Unmated males released sulcatol for at least 12 days, and ceased producing the pheromone after 20 days. The peak sulcatol release occurred after 2 days. Males cease production of sulcatol 24 h after being paired with females. Single females were unable to initiate galleries, and no sulcatol was detected from their headspace and hindgut samples. The chiral ratio of the pheromone, observed from headspace samples, was 31% (S)-(+)- and 69% (R)-(-)-sulcatol.

High critical temperature superconductors are evolving from a scientific research subject into large-scale application devices. In order to meet this development demand they must withstand high current capacity under mechanical loads arising from thermal contraction during cooling from room temperature down to operating temperature (usually 77 K) and due to the electromagnetic forces generated by the current and the induced magnetic field. Among the HTS materials, the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox, compound imbedded in an Ag/AgMg sheath has shown the best results in terms of critical current at 77 K and tolerance against mechanical strain. Aiming to evaluate the influence of thermal stress induced by a number of thermal shock cycles we have evaluated the V-I characteristic curves of samples mounted onto semicircular holders with different curvature radius (9.75 to 44.5 mm). The most deformed sample (epsilon = 1.08%) showed the largest reduction of critical current (40%) compared to the undeformed sample and the highest sensitivity to thermal stress (I-c/I-c0 = 0.5). The V-I characteristic curves were also fitted by a potential curve displaying n-exponents varying from 20 down to 10 between the initial and last thermal shock cycle.

The use of sewage sludge in agricultural land as a means of sludge disposal and recycling has been shown to be economical and suitable because of the presence of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. However, municipal sludges often contain high quantities of toxic metals and other compounds that must be removed for its safe use in agricultural soils. The biological leaching of metals from sewage sludges has been shown to be a promising technique for metal detoxifying in such complex matrix. The process efficiency is dependent on several physico-chemical parameters, such as total solids concentration, metal forms, pH-ORP, and temperature. Scale-up of the process has not yet been defined and is still pursuing the correct operational design. Current research involving the bioleaching of metals from sewage sludge and its application to land, which affects soil physical properties, are presented and discussed.

In the present work, electroactive grain boundaries of highly dense metal oxide SnO2-based polycrystalline varistors were determined by electrostatic force microscopy (EFM). The EFM technique was applied to identify electroactive grain boundaries and thus estimate the amount of active grain boundary, which, in the metal oxide SnO2-based varistor, was calculated at around 85%, i.e., much higher than that found in traditional metal oxide ZnO-based varistors. The mean potential barrier height value obtained from the EFM analysis was in complete agreement with the values calculated from the C-V measurements, together with a complex capacitance plane analysis that validates the methodology proposed here. Superovulation would potentially increase the efficiency and decrease the cost of embryo transfer by increasing embryo collection rates. Other potential clinical applications include improving pregnancy rates from frozen semen, treatment of subfertility in stallions and mares, and induction of ovulation in transitional mares. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of purified equine follicle stimulating hormone (eFSH; Bioniche Animal Health USA, Inc., Athens, GA) in inducing superovulation in cycling mares. In the first experiment, 49 normal, cycling mares were used in a study at Colorado State University. Mares were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: group 1, controls (n = 29) and groups 2 and 3, eFSH-treated (n = 10/group). Treated mares were administered 25 mg of eFSH twice daily beginning 5 or 6 days after ovulation (group 2). Mares received 250 (of cloprostenol on the second day of eFSH treatment. Administration of eFSH continued until the majority of follicles reached a diameter of 35 mm, at which time a deslorelin implant was administered. Group 3 mares (n = 10) received 12 mg of eFSH twice daily starting on day 5 or 6. The treatment regimen was identical to that of group 2. Mares in all 3 groups were bred with semen from 1 of 4 stallions. Pregnancy status was determined at 14 to 16 days after ovulation. In experiment 2, 16 light-horse mares were used during the physiologic breeding season in Brazil. On the first cycle, mares served as controls, and on the second cycle, mares were administered 12 mg of eFSH twice daily until a majority of follicles were 35 mm in diameter, at which time human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) was administered. Mares were inseminated on both cycles, and embryo collection attempts were performed 7 or 8 days after ovulation. Mares treated with 25 mg of eFSH developed a greater number of follicles (35 mm) and ovulated a greater number of follicles than control mares. However, the number of pregnancies obtained per mare was not different between control mares and those receiving 25 mg of eFSH twice daily. Mares treated with 12 mg of eFSH and administered either hCG or deslorelin also developed more follicles than untreated controls. Mares receiving eFSH followed by hCG ovulated a greater number of follicles than control mares, whereas the number of ovulations from mares receiving eFSH followed by deslorelin was similar to that of control mares. Pregnancy rate for mares induced to ovulate with hCG was higher than that of control mares, whereas the pregnancy rate for eFSH-treated mares induced to ovulate with deslorelin did not differ from that of the controls. Overall, 80% of mares administered eFSH had multiple ovulations compared with 10.3% of the control mares. In experiment 2, the number of large follicles was greater in the eFSH-treated cycle than the previous untreated cycle. In addition, the number of ovulations during the cycle in which mares were treated with eFSH was greater (3.6) than for the control cycle (1.0). The average number of embryos recovered per mare for the eFSH cycle (1.9 ± 0.3) was greater than the embryo recovery rate for the control cycle (0.5 ± 0.3). In summary, the highest ovulation and the highest pregnancy and embryo recovery rates were obtained after administration of 12 mg of eFSH twice daily followed by 2500 IU of hCG. Superovulation with eFSH increased pregnancy rate and embryo recovery rate and, thus, the efficiency of the embryo transfer program.

Cell culture of Maytenus ilicifolia were established in order to produce and to quantify the antitumoral and antioxidant quinonemethide triterpenes. In vitro calli were induced from leaf explants of native plants and cultured in semi-solid medium under controlled conditions of humidity, temperature and photoperiod. The quinonemethide triterpenes showed maximum accumulation in the logarithmic phase growth of the cell culture. A rapid, sensitive and reliable reverse-phase HPLC method was used for quantitative determination of the antitumoral and antioxidant quinonemethide triterpenes, 22β-hydroxymaytenin and maytenin in callus of Maytenus ilicifolia. Well resolved peaks with good detection response and linearity in the range 1.0 - 100 μg/mL were obtained. This quantitative work was performed by an external standard method.
