Blend films of poly (o-ethoxyaniline) (POEA) and collagen were fabricated by casting under optimized conditions and characterized by Raman scattering and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies. The UV-vis spectra showed that the addition of collagen in the aqueous solution of POEA promotes a dedoping of the POEA. This effect was also observed for the blend films as supported by Raman scattering and a mechanism for the chemical interaction between POEA-collagen is proposed. The influences of different percentage of collagen as well as the pH of stock solutions during the fabrication process of the blend films were also investigated. It was found that the preparation method plays an important role in the flexibility and freestanding properties of the films. Complementary, the surface morphology was studied by atomic force microscopy and the conductivity by dc measurements. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

High amylose cross-linked to different degrees with sodium trimetaphosphate by varying base strength (2% or 4%) and contact time (0.5-4 h) was evaluated as non-compacted systems for sodium diclophenac controlled release. The physical properties and the performance of these products for sodium diclophenac controlled release from non-compacted systems were related to the structures generated at each cross-linking degree. For samples at 2% until 2 h the swelling ability, G' and eta* values increased with the cross-linking degree, because the longer polymer chains became progressively more entangled and linked. This increases water uptake and holding, favoring the swelling and resulting in systems with higher viscosities. Additionally, the increase of cross-linking degree should contribute for a more elastic structure. The shorter chains with more inter-linkages formed at higher cross-linking degrees (2%4h and 4%) make water caption and holding difficult, decreasing the swelling, viscosity and elasticity. For 2% samples, the longer drug release time exhibited for 2%4h sample indicates that the increase of swelling and viscosity contribute for a more sustained drug release, but the mesh size of the polymeric network seems to be determinant for the attachment of drug molecules. For the 4% samples, smaller meshes size should determine less sustained release of drug. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on the assembly between inorganic 2D host structure and polymer have received considerable attention in the last few years. This emerging class of materials presents several applications according to their structural and functional properties. Particularly, among others, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) provide the opportunity of preparing new organically modified 2D nanocomposites. Pyrrole carboxylic acid derivatives, namely 4-(lH-pyrrol-1-yl)benzoate, 3-(pyrrol-i-yl)-propanoate,7-(pyrrol-1-yl)-heptanoate, and aniline carboxylic acid derivative, namely 3-aminobenzoic acid, have been intercalated in LDHs of intralamellar composition Zn2Al(OH)(6). The LDHs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method at constant pH followed by hydrothermal treatment for 72 h. The materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction patterns (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron spin resonance (ESR). The basal spacing found by the PXRD technique gives evidence of the formation of bilayers of the intercalated anions. ESR spectra present a typical signal with a superhyperfine structure with 6 + 1 lines (g = 2.005 +/- 0.0004), which is assigned to the interaction between a carboxylate radical from the guest molecules and a nearby aluminium nucleus (I = 5/2) from the host structure. Additionally, the ESR data suggest that the monomers are connected to each other in limited number after thermal treatment. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The structural and electronic properties of bulk and both oxidized and reduced SnO2(110) surfaces as well as the adsorption process of O-2 on the reduced surface have been investigated by periodic DFT calculations at B3LYP level. The lattice parameters, charge distribution, density of states and band structure are reported for the bulk and surfaces. Surface relaxation effects have been explicitly taken into account by optimizing slab models of nine and seven atomic layers representing the oxidized and reduced surfaces, respectively. The conductivity behavior of the reduced SnO2(110) surface is explained by a distribution of the electrons in the electronic states in the band gap induced by oxygen vacancies. Three types of adsorption approaches of O-2 on the four-fold tin at the reduced SuO(2)(110) surface have been considered. The most exothermic channel corresponds to the adsorption of O-2 parallel to the surface and to the four-fold tin row, and it is believed to be associated with the formation of a peroxo O-2(2-) species. The chemisorption of O-2 on reduced SnO2(110) surface causes a significant depopulation of states along the band gap and it is shown to trap the electrons in the chemisorbed complex producing an electron-depleted space-charge layer in the inner surface region of the material in agreement with some experimental evidences. Arsenic is an environmental pollutant that induces congenital malformations in experimental models and can contribute to human birth defects. The environmental exposure to arsenic is relatively small when compared with the doses required to cause teratogenicity in mice and other laboratory animals. In order to study the action of zinc in the arsenic-induced teratogenicity, in the present work mice were either pretreated with zinc and later with arsenic or were treated simultaneously with zinc and arsenic in vivo and in vitro. Following administration of arsenate on gestation day 8, pregnant females were killed on the 17th day of gestation; maternal and fetal data were collected by laparotomy and used to calculate reproductive parameters. Fetuses were analyzed for the presence of external malformation and, after the appropriate processing, visceral and skeletal analyses were accomplished. Conceptuses were exposed in whole embryo culture to arsenicals on gestation day 8 (3-6 somite stage). After a 26 h culture period, morphological development was assessed. Neither pretreatment with zinc nor simultaneous administration of zinc prevented arsenic teratogenicity in these experimental models. (C) 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The purpose of this study was to investigate gait spatial parameters at the point of departure, with obstacle heights adjusted to individual body scale. Undergraduate student volunteers (M age=22.4 yr., SD=2.1; 6 women, 1 man) were asked to step once, then cross over an obstacle and stop. This behavior was video recorded to extract kinematic data. The obstacle heights corresponded to high (knee-height) and low obstacles (half the knee-height). Points of departure corresponded to far (length of the lower limb) and close (half the length of the lower limb). The close point of departure influenced the trailing foot's placement ahead of the obstacle as well as step length. The high obstacle influenced the trailing foot's toe clearance. An interaction between factors was observed for leading foot toe clearance. Results indicate that body scale affected the participants' locomotor behavior during the obstacle-avoidance task.

Ectotherm antipredator behaviour might be strongly affected both by body temperature and size: when environmental temperatures do not favour maximal locomotor performance, large individuals may confront predators, whereas small animals may flee, simply because they have no other option. However, integration of body size and temperature effects is rarely approached in the study of antipredator behaviour in vertebrate ectotherms. In the present study we investigated whether temperature affects antipredator responses of tegu lizards, Tupinambis merianae, with distinct body sizes, testing the hypothesis that small tegus (juveniles) run away from predators regardless of the environmental temperature, because defensive aggression may not be an effective predator deterrent, whereas adults, which are larger, use aggressive defence at low temperatures, when running performance might be suboptimal. We recorded responses of juvenile (small) and adult (large) tegu lizards to a simulated predatory attack at five environmental temperatures in the laboratory. Most differences between the two size classes were observed at low temperatures: large tegus were more aggressive overall than were small tegus at all temperatures tested, but at lower temperatures, the small lizards often used escape responses whereas the large ones either adopted a defensive posture or remained inactive. These results provide strong evidence that body size and temperature affect the antipredator responses of vertebrate ectotherms. We discuss the complex and intricate network of evolutionary and ecological parameters that are likely to be involved in the evolution of such interactions. The interaction between cationic surfactants and isopropylacrylamide-acrylic acid-ethyl methacrylate (IPA:AA:EMA) terpolymers has been investigated using steady-state fluorescence and spectrophotometric measurements to assess the effect of the polymer composition on the aggregation process and terpolymers' thermosensitivities. Micropolarity studies using pyrene show that the interaction of cationic surfactants with IPA:AA:EMA terpolymers occurs at surfactant concentrations much smaller than that observed for the pure surfactant in aqueous solution. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) values decrease with both the hydrocarbon length of the surfactant and the content of ethyl methacrylate. These results were interpreted as a manifestation of the increasing contribution of attractive hydrophobic and electrostatic forces between negatively charged polymer chains and positively charged surfactant molecules. The increase of ethyl methacrylate in the copolymers lowers the CAC due to the larger hydrophobic character of the polymer backbone. The cloud point determination reveals that the lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) depend strongly on the copolymer composition and surfactant nature. The binding of surfactants molecules to the polymer chain screens the electrostatic repulsion between the carboxylic groups inducing a conformational transition and the dehydration of the polymer chain.

It is well known that experimental data, coming from solar and atmospheric neutrino detectors and also from experiments which look for neutrino oscillations. strongly suggest that neutrinos must have a mass different from zero. However at least the solar and/or the atmospheric neutrino data can be related to new flavor changing interactions beyond the standard model instead to the finite mass of neutrinos. This new physics may induce i) extra effects in neutrino-matter interactions, ii) CP violation in pion and lepton decays and, iii) muonium to antimuonium transition. We give two examples of models in which all those effects arise even with strictly massless neutrinos: the 331 model and multi-Higgs doublet extension of the standard model (mHDM) with flavor changing neutral currents in the charged lepton sector. It means that in this kind of models if neutrino masses were eventually needed, they will be independent of the parameters of the new interactions.
