We report the effect of solvent on the rhodamine 6G encapsuled into channels of mesoporous silica, synthesized by two-step process that gives intermediary stable hybrid micelles. Mesoporous materials have been obtained by the method that involves surfactant micelles (mainly cationic) and inorganic precursor of the structure to be obtained. MSU-X type mesoporous silica has been synthesized with polyethylene oxide surfactant as the directing-structure agent and tetraethyl orthosilicate Si(OEt)(4) as the silica source. The influence of the solvent on the encapsulation of rhodamine dye was systematically explored, specially its influence on the luminescence properties. Rhodamine 6G encapsuled into mesoporous silica channel was characterized by UV-Vis and luminescence spectroscopies, scanning electron microscopy, small angle x ray scattering and N(2) sorption-desorption. The pore size and the solvent effects into luminescence dye encapsuled into mesoporous silica channels are observed in the visible absorption and emission spectra of rhodamine 6G. The intense photo luminescence band of rhodamine 6G dye is in 500 to 600 nm region. The observed shift of the absorption and emission bands can be assigned to the effect of the solvents dielectric constant and pore size of mesoporous silica.

Nickel nanoparticles into silica-carbon matrix composites were prepared by using the polymeric precursor method. The effects of the polyester type and the time of pyrolysis on the mesoporosity and nickel particle dispersion into non-aqueous amorphous silica-carbon matrix were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, adsorption/desorption isotherms and TEM. A well-dispersed metallic phase could be only obtained by using ethylene glycol. Weightier polyesters affected the pyrolysis process due to a combination of more amounts of carbonaceous residues and delaying of pyrolysis process. The post-pyrolyzed composites were successfully cleaned at 200 degrees C for I h in oxygen atmosphere leading to an increase in the surface area and without the occurrence of carbon combustion or nickel nanoparticles oxidation. The matrix composites presented predominantly mesoporous with pore size well defined in 38 angstrom, mainly when tetraethylene glycol was used as polymerizing agent. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Production of biodiesel by esterification of palmitic acid over mesoporous aluminosilicate Al-MCM-41
Resumo:
Biodiesel has been obtained by esterification of palmitic acid with methanol, ethanol and isopropanol in the presence of Al-MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieves with Si/Al ratios of 8.16 and 32. The catalytic acids were synthesized at room temperature and characterized by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen absorption (BET/BJH), infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The reaction was carried out at 130 degrees C whilst stirring at 500 rpm, with an alcohol/acid molar ratio of 60 and 0.6 wt% catalyst for 2 h. The alcohol reactivity follows the order methanol > ethanol > isopropanol. The catalyst Al-MCM-41 with ratio Si/Al = 8 produced the largest conversion values for the alcohols studied. The data followed a rather satisfactory approximation to first-order kinetics. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Non-crystalline silica was obtained with different particle sizes. Samples were prepared from soluble sodium silicate (water glass) and sulfuric acid solutions. Dialysis was performed for sodium sulfate elimination. Products were dried in a microwave oven, milled and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectrum and sedigraphic analysis. Products milled for more than 120 minutes showed uniform particle size distribution with average silica particle size of 4.5 mu m.

The use of AC/DC magnetic susceptibility and impedance measurements to detect oxygen depletion effects in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 +/-delta and NiMn2O4+delta spinel-type compounds is reported. For the NiMn2O4, for which no Mn4+ was found, three superposed Debye relaxations were observed in the range 260-180 K. Otherwise, in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, the argon annealed has contributed to a decrease in T-C, but the amount of Mn4+ is still too high to allow the observation of a relaxation in this frequency window. Starting from linear equations for the complex scalar field, the two- and three-point Green's functions are obtained in the infrared approximation. We show that the infrared singularity factorizes in the vertex function as in spinor QED, reproducing in a simple and straightforward way the result of lengthy perturbative calculations.

The immobilization of soluble catalyst {Tp(Ms)}TiCl3 (Tp(Ms*)HB(3-mesityl-pyrazolyl)(2)(5-mesityl-pyrazolyl)(-)) on silica and MAO-modified silicas containing 4.0, 8.0 and 23.0 wt.% Al/SiO2 yields active supported catalysts for ethylene polymerization. Among the supported catalysts studied by XRF spectroscopy, higher titanium content was obtained using MAO-modified silica containing 8.0 wt.% Al/SiO2 as support. For the ethylene polymerization reactions carried out in hexane at 60degreesC using a combination of triisobutylaluminum (TiBA) and methylaluminoxane (MAO) (1:1), the activities varied between 24.4 and 113.5 kg of PE/mol [Ti] h. The highest activity is reached using MAO-modified silica containing 4.0 wt.% Al/SiO2 as support. The viscosity-average molecular weights ((M) over bar (v)) of the PE's produced with the supported catalysts varying from 1.44 to 9.94 x 10(5) g/mol with melting temperatures in the range of 125-140degreesC. The use of other Lewis acid cocatalysts, including TiBA, diethylaluminium chloride (DEAC), and trimethylaluminum (TMA) resulted also in the formation of active catalysts for ethylene polymerization. However, the activities are lower than that one using a combination of TiBA and MAO. The viscosity-average molecular weights (R,) of PE's are influenced by varying the cocatalysts as well as the Al/Ti molar ratio. The supported catalyst generated in situ under ethylene atmosphere is roughly four times more active than supported one containing 4.0 wt.% Al/SiO2. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the singular filtration properties of an ultrafiltration membrane made with mesoporous silica that exhibits cylindrical pores aligned mostly normal to the support. This membrane supported on tubular commercial macroporous alumina supports was prepared by the interfacial growth mechanism between stable silica-surfactant hybrid micelles made of the association of silica oligomers with polyethyleneoxide-based (PEO) surfactants and sodium fluoride, a well-known silica condensation catalyst [Boissière et al., An ultrafiltration membrane made with mesoporous MSU-X silica, Chem. Mater. 15 (2003) 460-463]. It appears that the combined effect of the silica nature of the membrane, whose surface charge can be easily adjusted by changing the pH and the non-connected cylindrical shape of the pores provides a new behavior in the retention properties, as proved by the filtration of polyoxyethylene polymers (PEO) with different molecular weights. Depending on the filtration conditions, a rejection rate of 80% and a steep cut-off at 2000 Da can be obtained or, on the reverse, polymers three times bigger than the pore diameter can diffuse through the membrane. This new filtration mechanism, which opens up new modes of separation modes, is explained in the light of both topology of the porous network and pH-dependent interactions between PEO polymers and silica porous media. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. We have investigated some diamondoids encapsulation into single walled carbon nanotubes (with diameters ranging from1.0 up to 2.2 nm) using fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Diamondoids are the smallest hydrogen-terminated nanosized diamond-like molecules. Diamondois have been investigated for a large class of applications, ranging from oil industry to pharmaceuticals. Molecular ordered phases were observed for the encapsulation of adamantane, diamantane, and dihydroxy diamantanes. Chiral ordered phases, such as; double, triple, 4- and 5-stranded helices were also observed for those diamondoids. Our results also indicate that the modification of diamondoids through chemical functionalization with hydroxyl groups can lead to an enhancement of the molecular packing inside the carbon nanotubes in comparison to non-functionalized molecules. For larger diamondoids (such as, adamantane tetramers), we have not observed long-range ordering, but only a tendency of incomplete helical structural formation. © 2012 Materials Research Society.

Despite the considerable progress in the understanding of the mechanistic aspects of the oscillatory electro-oxidation of C1 molecules, there are apparently no systematic studies concerning the impact of surface modifiers on the oscillation dynamics. Herein we communicate on the oscillatory electro-oxidation of formic acid on ordered Pt3Sn intermetallic phase, and compare the results with those obtained on a polycrystalline platinum electrode. Overall, the obtained results were very reproducible, robust and allowed a detailed analysis on the correlation between the catalytic activity and the oscillation dynamics. The presence of Sn in the intermetallic electrode promotes drastic effects on the oscillatory dynamics. The decrease in the mean electrode potential and in the oscillation frequency, as well as the pronounced increase in the number oscillations (and also in the oscillation time), was discussed in connection with the substantial catalytic enhancement of the Pt3Sn towards the electro-oxidation of formic acid. The self-organized potential oscillations were used to probe the electrocatalytic activity of the Pt3Sn electrode and compare it with that for polycrystalline Pt. The presence of Sn resulted in a significant decrease (2-11 times, depending on the applied current) of the rate of surface poisoning. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
