Objective. Pixel intensity values (PI) and fractal dimensions (FD) were compared in selected mandibular regions on digital panoramic images of normal, osteopenic, and osteoporotic perimenopausal and postmenopausal women to evaluate their relative efficacies in detecting osteoporotic-associated bone density changes.Study design. Standardized mandibular angle, body, and canine/premolar (C/PM) regions on 54 charge-coupied device (CCD) digital panoramic images of normal and potentially osteoporotic postmenopausal women were analyzed for PI and FD. Lumbar spine and femoral neck dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry QXA) on each patient served as the reference standard examination. Pearson correlation coefficients and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed.Results. There was significant correlation among PI measurements (P < 0.01), and no significant correlation between FD. C/PM had significantly lower PI than control C/PM (P = 0.049).Conclusions. Osteoporotic changes in mandibular C/PM cancellous bone were detected in our study population on CCD digital panoramic images by using a robust image analysis paradigm. Future automated application of such image analysis could enable widespread, cost effective screening for osteoporosis in dental settings.

The aim of this in vivo study was to evaluate the thermal effects caused by 810 nm 1.2 W diode laser irradiation of periodontal tissues. Despite all data available concerning the laser application for periodontal treatment, one of the most relevant challenges is to prevent the harmful tissue heating induced by different clinical protocols. Periodontal pockets were induced at molars in 96 rats. Several irradiation powers under CW mode were investigated: 0, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 mW. The pockets were irradiated using a 300 A mu m frontal illumination fiber. The animals were killed at 4 or 10 days after irradiation. The mandible was surgically removed and histologically processed. The histological sections stained with H/E demonstrated that irradiation parameters up to 1000 mW were thermally safe for the periodontal tissues. The sections stained with Brown & Brenn technique evidenced bacteria in the periodontal tissues. Consequently, the diode laser irradiation as a unique treatment was not capable to eliminate bacteria of the biofilm present in the pockets. According to the methodology used here, it was concluded that the thermal variation promoted by a diode laser can cause damage to periodontal tissues depending on the energy density used. The 1.2 W diode laser irradiation itself does not control the bacteria present in the biofilm of the periodontal pockets without mechanical action. The knowledge of proper high intensity laser parameters and methods of irradiation for periodontal protocols may prevent any undesirable thermal damage to the tissues.

Objective. The present study evaluated the dynamics of the development of periapical lesions.Study design. Root canals from dogs' teeth were exposed to the oral environment, and then sealed for 7 days (Group A), 15 days (Group B), 30 days (Group C), and 60 days (Group D). After each experimental period, radiographs were taken to detect periapical bone resorption. In addition, histological sections from the periapical region were prepared. The radiographic and histological results were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's, Wilcoxon, and Pearson's tests. Significance level was set at 5%.Results. Lesions were radiographically visible at 15 and 30 days, and had similar size at these periods (P > .05). At 60 days, lesions were larger than in the other periods (P < .05). Bone resorption was detected histologically at 7 days. The greatest values of bone resorption were observed at the 30- and 60-day periods (P < .05). The results of the methods of evaluation were similar only at the 30-day period. There was no correlation between the radiographic and histological results.Conclusions. Periapical radiography did not provide detection of periapical lesion in its initial stages. The periapical lesions became more evident radiographically when the bone resorption area increased. This study investigates the possible differences between actors' and nonactors' vocal projection strategies using acoustic and perceptual analyses. A total of 11 male actors and 10 male nonactors volunteered as subjects, reading an extended text sample in habitual, moderate, and loud levels. The samples were analyzed for sound pressure level (SPL), alpha ratio (difference between the average SPL of the 1-5 kHz region and the average SPL of the 50 Hz-1 kHz region), fundamental frequency (F0), and long-term average spectrum (LTAS). Through LTAS, the mean frequency of the first formant (171) range, the mean frequency of the actor's formant, the level differences between the F1 frequency region and the F0 region (L1-L0), and the level differences between the strongest peak at 0-1 kHz and that at 3-4 kHz were measured. Eight voice specialists evaluated perceptually the degree of projection, loudness, and tension in the samples. The actors had a greater alpha ratio, stronger level of the actor's formant range, and a higher degree of perceived projection and loudness in all loudness levels. SPL, however, did not differ significantly between the actors and nonactors, and no differences were found in the mean formant frequencies ranges. The alpha ratio and the relative level of the actor's formant range seemed to be related to the degree of perceived loudness. From the physiological point of view, a more favorable glottal setting' providing a higher glottal closing speed, may be characteristic of these actors' projected voices. So, the projected voices, in this group of actors, were more related to the glottic source than to the resonance of the vocal tract.

Two wild diploid (2n = 20 chromosomes) and self-pollinating Arachis species, Arachis Pintoi Krapov and W.C.Gregory and A. villosulicarpa Hoehne were submmited to C-band technique to karyotype analyses. Root tips were employed in the analyses. Morphometric data chose that chromosome lengths varied from 3.12 in A. villosulicarpa to 1.45 in A. Pintoi. Karyotype formula obtained was 10sm to A. Pintoi and 9sm + 1m to A. villosulicarpa. There was a predominance of pericentromeric C-band in all mitotic metaphasic chromosomes in both species. Besides C-band values, both species still did not differ in respect to chromosome absolute and relative lengths, centromeric index, symmetry index and total karyotype haploid length. C-band and morphometric data did not show strong or significant differences which could separate these two species of peanut which belong to evolutive different sections.

Ultrastructural and cytochemical characteristics of mononuclear phagocyte cells in turtles are not well described in the literature, especially in Phrynops hilarii. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate these characteristics in the mononuclear phagocyte cells and their phagocytic activity in vitro using the turtle P. hilarii as an experimental animal model. The six turtles used in the study were observed in two seasons, spring and summer. Results showed that mononuclear phagocytes incubated only in diluted solution or with colloidal charcoal have cytoplasm phagolysosomes. The cells incubated with colloidal charcoal and further exposed to the cytochemical reaction for acid P-glycerophosphatase, showed cytoplasm phagolysosomes filled by charcoal particles being digested and some positively stained lysosomes. Acid P-glycerophosphatase positive reaction was present in lysosomes and inside the phagolysosomes, while acid cytidine 5-monophosphatase staining occurred in lysosome surroundings. A positive reaction for trimetaphosphatase was also found inside phagolysosomes. In conclusion, the presence of lysosomal enzymes like trimetaphosphatase and cytidine-5'-sodium monophosphate, in the circulating blood of P. hilarii indicate that mononuclear phagocytes participate in the phagocytic process by gathering many phagocytic cells and forming multinucleated giant cells, which probably have a role in the blood clearance process.
