Com o intuito de conhecer melhor o sistema arterial nesta espécie, descrevemos a origem das artérias celíaca e mesentérica cranial dos bubalinos. Utilizamos 30 fetos e 1 animal adulto. Os fetos variavam de 4 a 8 meses de idade e tiveram seus vasos injetados com solução de látex - Neoprene, tiveram seus vasos dissecados, e um animal adulto, que teve seus vasos dissecados no local de abate. Observamos que as artérias celíaca e mesentérica cranial originavam-se da porção torácica da aorta em todos os casos, estando isoladas em 90,33% deles e em tronco comum (tronco celíaco mesentérico) em 9,67% dos casos.

As formigas cortadeiras atacam diversas culturas agrícolas, pastagens e os reflorestamentos, atuando sobre muitas espécies vegetais. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a patogenicidade dos fungos Beauveria bassiana (isolados AM 9 e JAB 06), Metarhizium anisopliae (isolados E 9 e AL) e Paecilomyces farinosus (isolados CG 189 e CG 195) a soldados de Atta sexdens sexdens, em condições de laboratório. Após a coleta em formigueiro isento de produtos fitossanitários, exemplares de soldados foram cuidadosamente separados em grupos de oito indivíduos e, a seguir, banhados em suspensões contendo 1,0 x 10(6), 1,0 x 10(7), 1,0 x 10(8) e 1,0 x 10(9) conídios/mL de cada isolado. em seguida, cada grupo de formigas foi transferido para unidades de câmara úmida e mantido, sem alimentação, a 27 ± 1 ºC. A mortalidade foi verificada diariamente. Os três fungos se mostraram eficientes patógenos, pois provocaram alta mortalidade, matando mais que 80% dos soldados nos quatro primeiros dias após a inoculação. Os melhores isolados foram JAB 06 e AL, na concentração de 1,0 x 10(9) con./mL. Os isolados JAB 06, AL, CG 195 apresentaram maior capacidade de esporular nos cadáveres das formigas e os tempos letais decresceram com o aumento da concentração de conídios usada.

The histological aspects of the gastrointestinal tract of the ostrich (Struthio camelus) have been little studied, so this research is focused on such analysis. To this end, samples were obtained from different segments of the digestive tubes of five young ostriches aged 20 to 30 days. Based on the results, the authors conclude that the different segments of the digestive tube of the young ostrich presents the same general structure as that of other domestic birds and mammals, with some differences that may be due to age, the species involved, or feeding habits. It is hopes that this analysis will contribute to a better understanding of the physiological processes related to the nutrition and management of ostriches during their growth.

Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide distributed zoonosis that affects man and most warm-blooded animals, with a great economic impact in animal and public health. Serum samples from nine 9-banded armadillos, three 6-banded armadillos, three coatimundis, two opossums and one nutria were submitted for anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibody detection by means of a modified direct agglutination method. Encephalic tissue of three 6-banded armadillos, one 9-banded armadillo, one coatimundi and one nutria were digested in acid pepsin solution and inoculated into Swiss mice for parasite isolation. Only one serum sample from a nine-banded armadillo and two from six-banded armadillos reacted producing titers equal to 256, 512 and 512, respectively. T gondii was isolated in two 6-banded armadillos, one of which was not positive in the serological test. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Rhyncophorus palmarum (Coleoptera) is a pest of great economic importance because of the damage caused in the plants of the Palmae family. This study showed that the female reproductive system of this beetle is composed of two ovaries of the telotrophic meroistic type invariably containing two ovarioles per ovary. Each ovariole is home to about 50 oocytes at different stages of maturation. The proximal region of the ovary is rather peculiar because it houses inside it a large quantity of bacilliform structures immersed in a glycolipoprotein substance, which has never before been described in the literature. The function of these structures is still unknown. However, it is suggested that they can function as a method of neutralizing the resistance of the plant because these insects are responsible for the transmission of the red ring disease to the palm plants. Dufour glands of Apis mellifera and Melipona bicolor were studied under light and transmission electron microscopy, using the cytochemical techniques of mercury bromophenol blue for protein detection, imidazole-buffered osmium tetroxide selective staining of unsaturated lipids, lanthanum nitrate for intercellular junction identification and zinc-iodide-osmium tetroxide for cytoplasmic endomembrane visualization. The results in both species corroborated the lipid nature of the gland secretion and showed in A. mellifera the poverty of the synthetic machinery in the worker gland cells in comparison with the queen, as expected by previous biochemical analyses. The pathway of the exogenous compounds of the secretion is intracellular, since substances can penetrate the cell folds and intercellular junctions, but their access to the, gland lumen is barred by the apical intercellular junctions.

Noctilio leporinus (Chiroptera, Noctilionidae) has adaptations to piscivorous feeding habits, but also consumes crustaceans and insects. Between June 2005 and May 2006, bats were surveyed with mist nets during two evenings per month in the gallery forest of Corrego dos Tenentes, Pindorama, São Paulo State, Brazil. The objectives were to collect fecal samples and identify the fish species that were consumed by N. leporinus in this fragmented forest landscape. We documented two new fish species to its diet, the guppy Poecilia reticulata, Peters, 1859 and the "guaru" Phalloceros caudimaculatus (Hensel, 1868). Both fish species forage near the surface of water for insects and zooplankton, which is an area also utilized by N. leporinus when foraging for insects, crustaceans and fishs.
