Mechanical strength of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix composites were studied with particular interest on the effects of oxygen and argon plasma treated fibres. PET. fibres were treated in a radio frequency plasma reactor using argon or oxygen for different treatment times to increase the interface adhesion. Fibre volume fraction was measured through digital image analysis. Elastic moduli resulted between 3 GPa for untreated to 6 GPa for treated composites. Tensile tests on PET fibres showed that plasma treatment caused a decrease in average tensile strength compared to untreated fibres. Fracture analysis confirmed the increase in interfacial adhesion due to plasma treatment. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the degree of conversion (DC) and hydrolytic degradation through the Vickers hardness test (HV) of a nanofilled (Filtek™ Z-250, 3M) and a microhybrid (Filtek™Supreme-XT, 3M) composite resin. Materials and methods: Eight disk-shaped specimens (4 mm diameter × 2 mm thick, ISO 4049) of each material were prepared for each test. Composites were inserted into single increment in a metallic matrix and light-cured for 40 seconds. VH readings were performed for each specimen at predetermined intervals: immediately after polymerization (control), 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, 21, 30 and 180 days. After curing, initial hardness measurements were performed and the specimens were immersed in artificial saliva at 37°C. For DC (%), specimens were ground, pressed with KBr and analyzed by FT-IR spectrophotometer. Results: Student t-test showed that there was no difference between the resins for DC (p = 0.252). ANOVA analysis revealed that Z-250 VH means were all greater than S-XT, for both top and bottom surfaces, whatever the storage-period in artificial saliva (p < 0.001). After 180 days of storage, the hardness obtained for S-XT was similar with that at the baseline, for both top and bottom surfaces. While for Z-250 hardness was not significantly different from baseline only for top surface, but there was a significant decrease observed in hardness for bottom surface. Conclusion: The materials tested showed no evidence of hydrolytic degradation in a significant way, in a 6-month storagetime in artificial saliva. Nanofilled resin presents a monomer conversion comparable to the conventional microhybrid.

Syntactic Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composites (SFGMMC) are a type of composites reinforced by microballoons exhibiting a graded reinforcement distribution. These materials constitute a promising new generation of lightweight structural materials for aerospace, marine and shielding/insulation applications. In this work, A356 alloy reinforced with silica-alumina microballoons (SiO2-Al2O3) was processed by casting techniques. The influence of the microballoon distribution gradient on the corrosion behaviour of the composite was investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Composite surfaces were analysed before and after testing by Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to determine the influence of microstructural changes.

Impurity interstitial atoms present in metals with BCC structure can diffuse in the metallic matrix by jumps to energetically equivalent crystallographic sites. Anelastic spectroscopy (internal friction) is based on the measurement of mechanical loss or internal friction as a function of temperature. Due to its selective and nondestructive nature, anelastic spectroscopy is well suited for the study of diffusion of interstitial elements in metals. Internal friction measurements were made using the torsion pendulum technique with oscillation frequency of a few Hz, temperature interval from 300 to 700 K, heating rate of about 1 K/min, and vacuum better than 10-5 mbar. The polycrystalline Nb and Ta samples used were supplied by Aldrich Inc. The results obtained showed thermally activated relaxation structures due to stress-induced ordering of oxygen atoms around the Nb (or Ta) atoms of the metallic matrix. The results were interpreted by three methods and led to activation enthalpy values for the diffusion of oxygen in Nb and Ta of 1.15 eV and 1.10 eV, respectively.

The mechanical properties of metals with a body-centered cubic (bcc) structure, such as Nb, Ta, V, and their alloys, are modified with the introduction of interstitial impurities, such as O, N, C, or H. These metals can dissolve great amounts of O and N, for example, to form solid solutions. The interstitial solute atoms (ISA) in metals with a bcc structure occupy octahedral sites and cause local distortion with tetragonal symmetry. So ISA in these metals forms an elastic dipole that can align along one of the three cubic axis of the crystal. In the present paper, the torsion pendulum technique was employed for the investigation of various interactions among the metallic matrix and different interstitial solutes in the Nb-46wt%Ti alloy. From the relaxation spectra, we obtained the diffusion coefficients, pre-exponential factors, and activation energies for nitrogen in the Nb-46wt%Ti alloy.

Anelastic relaxation measurements were performed in a Nb-46wt%Ti alloy, in the temperature range of 300 to 700 K, using a torsion pendulum operating at an oscillating frequency near 2.0 Hz. The samples were measured in different conditions: cold worked, annealed in ultra-high vacuum and doped with several quantities of nitrogen. The relaxation spectra obtained were resolved into their component peaks, corresponding to the different kinds of interaction of the interstitial solutes with the metallic matrix. The relaxation parameters of each process were calculated using Debye's elementary peaks.

Cr3C2-NiCr and WC-Ni coatings are widely used for wear applications at high and room temperature, respectively. Due to the high corrosion resistance of NiCr binder, Cr3C2-NiCr coatings are also used in corrosive environments. The application of WC-Ni coatings in corrosive media is 14 not recommended due to the poor corrosion resistance of the (pure Ni) metallic matrix. It is well known that the addition of Cr to the metallic binder improves the corrosion properties. Erosion-corrosion performance of thermal spray coatings is widely influenced by ceramic phase composition, the size of ceramic particles and also the composition of the metallic binder. In the present work, two types of HVOF thermal spray coatings (Cr3C2-NiCr and WC-Ni) obtained with different spray conditions were studied and compared with conventional micro-cracked hard chromium coatings. Both as-sprayed and polished samples were tested under two erosion-corrosion conditions with different erosivity. Tungsten carbide coatings showed better performance under the most erosive condition, while chromium carbide coatings were superior under less erosive conditions. Some of the tungsten carbide coatings and hard chromium showed similar erosion-corrosion behaviour under more and less erosive conditions. The erosion-corrosion and electrochemical results showed that surface polishing improved the erosion-corrosion properties of the thermally sprayed coatings. The corrosion behaviour of the different coatings has been compared using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. Total material loss due to erosion-corrosion was determined by weight loss measurements. An estimation of the corrosion contribution to the total weight loss was also given. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The presence of interstitial elements in metals cause strong changes in their physical, chemical or mechanical properties. These interstitial impurities interact with the metallic matrix atoms by a relaxation process known as stress induced ordering. Relaxation processes give rise to a peak in the internal friction spectrum, known as Snock effect. The presence of substitutional solutes has a strong influence on Snoek effect, particularly if the substitutional solute element is the one, which interacts with the interstitial element. Anelastic spectroscopy measurements provide information of the behavior of these impurities in the metallic matrix. In this paper, polycrystalline samples of Nb-4.7 at.%Ta alloy have been analyzed in the as-received condition. Measurements of anelastic spectroscopy were carried out using an inverted torsion pendulum, operating with frequency of 2.0-30.0 Hz and in a temperature range between 300 and 700 K. It was observed the presence of a relaxation structure that have been attributed to stress induced ordering due to interstitial atoms around atoms of the metallic matrix. The relaxation structure have been decomposed in its constituent peaks, what it allowed to identify the following relaxation processes: Ta-O, Nb-O and Nb-N. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Internal friction measurements were made in the Nb-Ti alloy containing 0.3 wt. % of Ti, doped with various quantities of oxygen (0.04 to 0.08 wt. %) utilizing a torsion pendulum. These measurements were performed in the temperature range of 300 K to 700 K with the oscillation frequency about 1.0 Hz. The experimental results showed relaxation peaks due the stress induced ordering of oxygen atom and pairs of oxygen atom around the niobium atoms (metallic matrix) and around titanium atoms (substitutional solute).
