The risks of accidents, illness and early death are part of life on Earth, which touches all living creatures, including Mankind. Because of modern mass communication media, the emotional impact of current risks are greater than in the past. Many unnecessary risk can and should be avoided, and with respect to other they can be drastically reduced. In addition to this, some risks should be confronted in order to avoid greater ones. In any risk analysis, eventual benefits should be taken into consideration, the risks surrounding other activities and other factors. Some risks examples and their implications are presented and discussed, in general. Nuclear energy is specifically treated, but it also refers and comments that which surrounds other human activities (airplanes, automobiles, smog, gasoline, DDT, and coal energy). As in the history of aviation, nuclear industry has a history of greater successes than failures. Nonetheless, in both cases, serious accidents deserve deep thought, including the increment of security norms. The current fear of some people to nuclear energy is compared to the unfounded fear at the advent of gasoline last century. Risks, naturally, should not be exagerated, but they cannot be discarded. The main intention of the author is to discuss the complexity of the problem, and to see that risks are evaluated and accepted. In relation to nuclear energy, the author only mentions his point of view, defended in other publications, that it involves very high risks.

We studied the frugivorous birds and their fruiting plants during two years in a forest fragment in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Our aim was to identify the importance of birds and plants based on an importance index that comprise both the number of interactions and interaction exclusiveness. Twentynine bird species and 25 plant species were recorded. Small birds (< 100 g) comprised 85% of the interactions, and Chiroxiphia caudata reached the largest importance index (0.296), with 12 interactions, being six exclusive. Among plants, the melastome Miconia cinnamomifolia reached the largest importance index (0.277), interacting with 72.4% (21) of the bird species. This study showed that seed dispersal by small birds couldn't be underestimated because they disperse seeds of many plant species, even in pristine forests. Studies like this are also important to list the main food resources to frugivorous birds that could be used in management plans.

This work aims to express the production and consumption changes occurred in the State of São Paulo in line with the logistics, the systems of movement and the economic flows. The mentioned productive and consumption devolutions towards the interior just was possible in the fast rhythm, with the hierarchical combination of some basic elements, such as: 1) the logistics as strategy, planning and management (including in the concession of public services to the private enterprise) of transports, storage and communications; 2) the technological improvement of systems of movement (infrastructure and means of transportation) and 3) the economic flows (goods, services, informations, capital gains and people) in the territory. Thus, we go to an analysis of the impacts of the fifth logistics revolution and the alternatives between systems of movement and territorial fluidity in the service of corporative demands in the space pertaining to the State of São Paulo. © Copyright Scripta Nova, 2009.
