The aim of this paper is to study finite temperature effects in effective quantum electrodynamics using Weisskopf's zero-point energy method in the context of thermo, field dynamics. After a general calculation for a weak magnetic field at fixed T, the asymptotic behavior of the Euler-Kockel-Heisenberg Lagrangian density is investigated focusing on the regularization requirements in the high temperature limit. In scalar QED the same problem is also discussed.

In certain Mott-insulating dimerized antiferromagnets, triplet excitations of the paramagnetic phase display both three-particle and four-particle interactions. When such a magnet undergoes a quantum phase transition into a magnetically ordered state, the three-particle interaction becomes part of the critical theory provided that the lattice ordering wave vector is zero. One microscopic example is the staggered-dimer antiferromagnet on the square lattice, for which deviations from O(3) universality have been reported in numerical studies. Using both symmetry arguments and microscopic calculations, we show that a nontrivial cubic term arises in the relevant order-parameter quantum field theory, and we assess its consequences using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. We also present finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo data for the staggered-dimer antiferromagnet which complement recently published results. The data can be consistently interpreted in terms of critical exponents identical to that of the standard O(3) universality class, but with anomalously large corrections to scaling. We argue that the cubic interaction of critical triplons, although irrelevant in two spatial dimensions, is responsible for the leading corrections to scaling due to its small scaling dimension.

Precursor solutions for Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN) synthesis were obtained by Pechini's method. The influence of the concentration of organic materials on the phase formation has been studied. For this purpose, PMN solutions were prepared with different precursors and were characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The obtained solutions were deposited onto a Si (100) substrate by dip coating and pre-treated in a hot plate at 300 degreesC for 1 h. The films were annealed at 600, 700, 800 and 900 degreesC for 1 h and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The perovskite phase was formed after annealing at 600 and 700 degreesC when the solution of PMN was prepared with a lower amount of organic material and starting with mobium oxide. By increasing the temperature to 800 or 900 degreesC, only the formation of pyrochlore phase was observed. With the solution prepared from mobium ethoxide, only the presence of pyrochlore phase was observed independently of the annealing temperature. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Citrate solution was employed in preparing Pb(Mg1/3Nb1/3)O-3 (PMN) powder from polymeric precursors. BaTiO3 particles of 600 nm average size were used as seed for growing PMN. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated the presence of both, pyrochlore Pb6Nb6MgO22 (P6N) and perovskite phases. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations indicated that only the PMN phase has hetero-epitaxially grown on the BaTiO3 seed particles. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of yttrium oxide, Y2O3, on the microstructure development of the SnO(2)center dot Co(3)O(4)center dot Nb2O5 typical varistor system was studied with scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies. The different phases present in the studied samples were characterized through XRD, EDS and selected area diffraction patterns (SAD). Particles of Co2SnO4 were observed with TEM in every sample, whereas clusters of the pyrochlore phase T2Sn2O7 were observed with SEM in samples with 0.05, 0.10 and 0.25 mol% of Y2O3. The higher non-linearity (a = 16) was achieved with the addition of 0.05 mol% of Y2O3. The influence of the secondary phases on the electrical properties is also addressed in this work. The dielectric properties and loss of Bi1.5ZnSb1.5O7 a poor-semiconducting ceramic were investigated by impedance spectroscopy, in the frequency range from 5 Hz to 13 MHz. Electric measurements were performed from 100 to 700 degreesC. Pyrochlore type phase was synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. Dense ceramic with 97% of the theoretical density was prepared by sintering via constant heating rate. The dielectric permittivity dependence as a function of frequency and temperature showed a strong dispersion at frequency lower than 10 kHz. The losses (tan delta) exhibit slight dependence with the frequency at low temperatures presenting a strong increase at temperatures higher than 400 degreesC. A decrease of the loss magnitude occurs with increasing frequency. Relaxation times were extracted using the dielectric functions Z(omega) and M(omega). The plots of the relaxation times tau(Z'), and tau(M) as a function of temperature follow the Arrhenius law, where a single slope is observed with activation energy values equal to 1.38 and 1.37 eV, respectively. Single-phase perovskite 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) powders were prepared by using a Ti-modified columbite precursor (MNT) obtained by the polymeric precursor method. The innovation consists in the preparation of Ti-modified columbite in order to react directly with a stoichiometric amount of PbO to obtain pyrochlore-free PMN-PT powders. It has been shown that titanium oxide forms a solid solution with columbite (MN) and does not affect the obtaining of a single-phase columbite precursor. Thus, a high amount of perovskite phase can be obtained by reaction with PbO at 800 degreesC for 2 h. Effects of K and Li additives on the structure of MNT and PMN-PT were studied. X-ray diffraction studies were carried out to verify the phase formation at each processing step and these data were used for structural refinement by the Rietveld method. Both K and Li additives increase the crystallinity of MNT powders, being this effect more intense for the Li-doped samples. For PMN-PT samples the additives cause an insignificant decrease in the amount of perovskite phase. The morphology of the PMN-PT powder depends on the type of the additive. The influence of niobia addition on the phase formation and dielectric properties of Pb(Zr0.45Ti0.55)O-3 powder prepared from polymeric precursor was analyzed. The weight fraction and unit-cell volume of the tetragonal phase decreased, and the mass fraction of the rhombohedral phase increased, with increasing niobia concentration. The rhombohedral unit-cell volume increased up to 5 mol% of added Nb and then decreased. Small amounts of pyrochlore and tetragonal zirconia phases were observed in PZT powder with more than 10 mol% Nb. These results were interpreted as an indication that the Nb ion was substituted for the zirconium ion in the tetragonal phase. For sintered PZT samples at 1100 degrees C, no free-zirconia phase was observed. The dielectric constant increased with the niobia addition up to 5 mol% and decreased for higher concentrations. The Curie temperature decreased with niobia addition up to 10 mol% before the formation of pyrochlore phase. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The main properties of realistic models for manganites are studied using analytic mean-field approximations and computational numerical methods, focusing on the two-orbital model with electrons interacting through Jahn-Teller (JT) phonons and/or Coulombic repulsions. Analyzing the model including both interactions by the combination of the mean-field approximation and the exact diagonalization method, it is argued that the spin-charge-orbital structure in the insulating phase of the purely JT-phononic model with a large Hund couphng J(H) is not qualitatively changed by the inclusion of the Coulomb interactions. As an important application of the present mean-held approximation, the CE-type antiferromagnetic state, the charge-stacked structure along the z axis, and (3x(2) - r(2))/(3y(2) - r(2))-type orbital ordering are successfully reproduced based on the JT-phononic model with large JH for the half-doped manganite, in agreement with recent Monte Carlo simulation results. Topological arguments and the relevance of the Heisenberg exchange among localized t(2g) spins explains why the inclusion of the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction does not destroy the charge stacking structure. It is also verified that the phase-separation tendency is observed both in purely JT-phononic (large JH) and purely Coulombic models in the vicinity of the hole undoped region, as long as realistic hopping matrices are used. This highlights the qualitative similarities of both approaches and the relevance of mixed-phase tendencies in the context of manganites. In addition, the rich and complex phase diagram of the two-orbital Coulombic model in one dimension is presented. Our results provide robust evidence that Coulombic and JT-phononic approaches to manganites are not qualitatively different ways to carry out theoretical calculations, but they share a variety of common features.

The effect of LiNbO3 and KNbO3 seeds on the microstructure and dielectric characteristics of PMN ceramic prepared by columbite route have been investigated with the addition of 0, 1, and 2-wt% of seeds. X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and an impedance analyzer were used to characterize the influence of seeds on physical characteristics and dielectric properties of PMN. LiNbO3 -seeded PMN samples present a significant increase in the amount of perovskite phase. The addition of LiNbO3 seeds in sintered PMN ceramics at 1100degreesC during 4 h causes a decrease in the porosity and the amount of pyrochlore phase. Weight losses during sintering of PMN ceramics are suppressed more significantly for LiNbO3 -seeded PMN. T-m of PMN ceramics changes with seeds concentration. KNbO3 seeds displace T-m to lower temperature whereas LiNbO3 causes its elevation. Dielectric constants of approximately 13,000 at 1 kHz was measured at -5degreesC in PMN ceramics with 1-wt% of LiNbO3 seeds.

Bi1.5ZnSb1.5O7 dielectric ceramic with pyrochlore structure was investigated by impedance spectroscopy from 400 to 750 degreesC. Pyrochlore was synthesized by the polymeric precursor method, a chemical synthesis route derived from Pechini's method. The grain or bulk resistance exhibits a sensor temperature characteristic, being a thermistor with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC). Only a single region was identified on the resistance curve investigated. The NTC thermistor characteristic parameter (beta) is equal to 7140 degreesC, in the temperature range investigated. The temperature coefficient of the resistance (alpha) was derived, being equal to -4.46x10(-2) degreesC(-1) at 400 degreesC. The conduction mechanism and relaxation are discussed. The effect of lead excess on the pyrochlore-type formation in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN) powders has been investigated. The polymeric precursor method was used in the synthesis of the columbite in association to the partial oxalate method to synthesize the PMN powder samples. Structure refinement of the columbite precursor and PMN powders was carried out using the Rietveld method. The quantitative phase analysis showed that the amount of perovskite phase is not affected by PbO excess, but a great excess drives the pyrochlore-type formation so that 3 wt.% of PbO causes the predominance of Mg-containing pyrochlore phase. Using the refined data obtained from the Rietveld refinement, the compositional fluctuation in the perovskite phase was calculated from Nb/Mg ratio values and Pb occupation factor. Mg inclusion occurs concomitant with Ph one into PMN perovskite phase and this effect is directed by PbO excess during powder synthesis. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The possibility of mechanochemical synthesis of the lead magnesium niobate (PMN) powders of the composition Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3) in iron vials was investigated. According to X-ray and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the obtained powder mixtures, milling in iron vials resulted in incorporation of Fe and formation of PFN of composition Pb(Fe(1/2)Nb(1/2))O(3) simultaneously with formation of PMN. Relative amounts of PMN and PFN were determined based on values of Curie temperature and lattice constant of perovskite phase. Although only 1 wt pct of Fe was incorporated, a stoichiometry of the system was significantly changed, resulting in formation of pyrochlore phase and excess MgO. Single-phase perovskite was obtained when the excess of PbO and Nb(2)O(5) was added during mechanochemical synthesis. Because the dielectric properties were worse than expected, the alternative ways for improvement of dielectric properties were tried and discussed.
