Complexes of the type [PdX(PPh3)(1)]X [1 = 4-phenyl-3- thiosemicarbazide; X = Cl- (2), Br- (3), I- (4), and SCN- (5)] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and IR, UV/Vis, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 4 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The binding of the complexes with a purine base (guanosine) was investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, which showed the complexes to coordinate to guanosine through N7. A gel electrophoresis assay demonstrated the ability of 2-5 to cleave DNA plasmid. All the complexes were tested in vitro by means of the MTT assay for their cytotoxicity against two murine cell lines, LM3 (mammary adenocarcinoma) and LP07 (lung adenocarcinoma), and compared with cisplatin. Complexes 2-5 exhibited good cytotoxicity that surpasses that of cisplatin in the case of LM3. A series of thiosemicarbazide/phosphane palladium(II) complexes have been synthesized and fully characterized. These complexes are able to cleave DNA plasmid and show cytotoxicity against adenocarcinoma (mammary LM3 and lung LP07), surpassing the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in the case of LM3. The purpose of this study is to carry on a thermoeconomic analysis at a biodiesel production plant considering the irreversibilities in each step (part I: biodiesel plant under study and functional thermoeconomic diagram [1]), making it possible to calculate the thermoeconomic cost in US$/kWh and US$/l of the biodiesel production, and the main byproduct generated, glycerin, incorporating the credits for the CO2 that is not emitted into the atmosphere (carbon credits). Assuming a sale price for both the biodiesel and the byproduct (glycerin), the annual revenue of the total investment in a plant with a capacity of 8000 t/year of biodiesel operating at 8000 h/year was calculated. The variables that directly or indirectly influence the final thermoeconomic cost include total annual biodiesel production, hours of operation, manufacturing exergy cost, molar ratio in the transesterification reaction, reaction temperature and pressure in the process. Depending on the increase or decrease in sale prices for both biodiesel and glycerin, the payback is going to significantly increase or decrease. It is evident that, in exergy terms, the sale of glycerin is of vital importance in order to reduce the biodiesel price, getting a shorter payback period for the plant under study. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the 2-year clinical performance of class II restorations made with a composite resin with two different viscosities. Methods: 47 patients received two class II restorations (n = 94), one made with GrandioSO (conventional viscosity CV), and the other with GrandioSO Heavy Flow (flowable viscosity FV), subjecting both materials to the same clinical conditions. The self-etching adhesive Futurabond M was used for all restorations. The composites were inserted using the incremental technique. The restorations were evaluated using the modified USPHS criteria according to the periods: baseline, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years after restorative procedures. Results: After 24 months, 40 patients attended the recall and 78 restorations were evaluated. In all periods, no secondary caries was observed. After 6 months, there were slightly overall changes of scores for most parameters. After 24 months, the higher number of changes from score Alfa to Bravo was observed for marginal discolouration (32.5% CV and 39.5% FV) and colour match (15% CV and 31.6% FV), followed by proximal contact (25% CV and 23.7% FV) and marginal adaptation (20% CV and 21.1% FV). For wear, surface texture and postoperative sensitivity the changes were very small. Just two restorations were lost during the 24-month follow up. Less than 5% of all restorations showed postoperative sensitivity. Chi-square test showed no significant differences between the two materials for all parameters analysed. Conclusion: After 2 years of clinical service, no significant differences were observed between GrandioSO conventional and GrandioSO Heavy Flow for the parameters analysed. Both materials provided acceptable clinical behaviour in class II restorations. Clinical Significance: This study presents the possibility of using a flowable composite with high filler content, for performing class II restorations. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The thermal decomposition of pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate and piperidinedithiocarbamate complexes of CoII, NiII, CuII and HgII have been studied by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The decomposition intermediates and final products were identified by their X-ray diffraction patterns. The i.r. spectra are discussed in terms of the thermal decomposition pathways.

To determine whether central α1 and α2-adrenergic mechanisms are involved in urinary sodium and potassium excretion and urine volume induced by angiotensin II (ANGII), these renal parameters were measured in volume-expanded Holtzman rats with cannulas implanted into lateral ventricle (LV) and lateral hypothalamus (LH). The injection of ANGII into LV in rats with volume expansion reduced the sodium, potassium and urine excretion in comparison to the control injections of isotonic saline, whereas prazosin (α1 antagonist) potentiated these effects. Clonidine (α2 agonist) and yohimbine (α2 antagonist) injected into LH previous to injection of ANGII into LV also abolished the inhibitory effect of ANGII. These results suggest that the discharge of central alpha-adrenergic receptors has dual inhibitory and excitatory effect on antinatriuretic, antikaliuretic and antidiuretic effect induced by central ANGII in volume-expanded rats. © 1995.

The present experiments were conducted to investigate the role of the α1-, α2- and β-adrenergic receptors of the median preoptic area (MnPO) on the water intake and urinary electrolyte excretion, elicited by central injections of angiotensin II (ANG II). Prazosin (an α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist) and yohimbine (an α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist) antagonized the water ingestion, Na +, K +, and urine excretion induced by ANG II. Administration of propranolol, a β-adrenergic receptor antagonist increased the Na +, K +, and urine excretion induced by ANG II. Previous treatment with prazosin and yohimbine reduced the pressor responses to ANG II. These results suggest that the adrenergic neurotransmission in the MnPO may actively participate in ANG II-induced dipsogenesis, natriuresis, kaliuresis, diuresis and pressor responses in a process that involves α1-, α2-, and β-adrenoceptors.
