The developmental anatomy and morphology of the ovule and seed in several species of Heliconia were investigated as part of an embryological study of the Heliconiaceae and to provide a better understanding of their relationships with the other families of the Zingiberales. Heliconia species have an ovule primordium with an outer integument of both dermal and subdermal origin. The archesporial cell is divided into a megasporocyte and a single parietal cell, which in turn are divided only anticlinally to form a single parietal layer, disintegrating later during gametogenesis. The embryo sac was fully developed prior to anthesis. In the developing seed, the endosperm was nuclear, with wall formation in the globular stage; a nucellar pad was observed during embryo development, but later became compressed. The ripe fruit contained seeds enveloped by a lignified endocarp that formed the pyrenes, with each pyrene having an operculum at the basal end; the embryo was considered to be differentiated. Most of these characteristics are shared with other Zingiberales, although the derivation of the operculum from the funicle and the formation of the main mechanical layer by the endocarp are unique to the Heliconiaceae.

The aims of the present study were to follow the nucleolar cycle in spermiogenesis of the laboratory rodents Rattus novergicus and Mus musculus, to verify the relationship between the nucleolar component and chromatoid body (CB) formation and to investigate the function of this cytoplasmic supramolecular structure in spermatogenic haploid cells. Histological sections of adult seminiferous tubules were analyzed cytochemically by light microscopy and ultrastructural procedures by transmission electron microscopy. The results reveal that in early spermatids, the CB was visualized in association with the Golgi cisterns indicating that this structure may participate in the acrosome formation process. In late spermatids, the CB was observed near the axonema, a fact suggesting that this structure may support the formation of the spermatozoon tail. In conclusion, our data showed that there is disintegration of spermatid nucleoli at the beginning of spermatogenesis and a fraction of this nucleolar material migrates to the cytoplasm, where a specific structure is formed, known as the "chromatoid body", which, apparently, participates in some parts of the rodent spermiogenesis process. Twenty-two stomachs from adult capybaras were used in this study, and an acid digestion mesoscopic technique was pursued using different concentrations of nitric acid to observe the muscular organization of the stomach. The capybara's stomach possessed a muscular coat composed of four layers or strata: external longitudinal, external oblique, circular and internal oblique. Also, the cardiac and pyloric sphincter muscles were comprised of three or two different layers, respectively. Furthermore, the internal oblique fibres were observed extending from the cardiac portion of the stomach to the smaller curvature, where they participated in the formation of the Ansa cardiaca together with the external. longitudinal fibres. This muscular architectural arrangement was compared to that in small rodents (rat, hamster, guinea pig), as well as in rabbits and pigs. In conclusion, the stomach of the capybara has a very particular, complex and defined muscular organization that differs from that in other rodents, or domestic animals, in particular, pigs. The biosynthesis of (2S)-2-methyl-2-(4'-methyl-3-pentenyl)-8-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-2H-1-benzopyran-6-carboxylic acid (gaudichaudianic acid), the major metabolite in leaves and roots of Piper gaudichaudianum Kunth (Piperaceae), has been investigated employing [1(-13) C]-D-glucose as precursor. The labelling pattern in the isolated gaudichaudianic acid was determined by quantitative 13 C NMR spectroscopy analysis and was consistent with involvement of both mevalonic acid and 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol-4-phosphate pathways in the formation of the dimethylallyl- and geranyl-derived moieties. The results confirmed that both plastidic and cytoplasmic pathways are able to provide isopentenyl diphosphate units for prenylation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films (BLT) were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a polymeric precursor solution. The spin-coated films were specular, crack-free and crystalline after annealing at 700 degrees C for 2 h. Crystallinity and morphological evaluation were examined by X ray diffraction (YRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The stability of the formed complex is of extreme importance for the formation of the perovskite phase. Films obtained from acid pH solution present elongated grains around 200 ran in size, whereas films obtained from basic solution present a dense microstructure with spherical grains (100 nm). The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the BLT films are strongly affected by the solution pH. The hysteresis loops are fully saturated with a remnant polarization and coercive voltage of P-r=20.2 mu C/cm(2) and V-c = 1.35 V and P-r= 15 mu C/cm(2) and V-c = 1.69 V for the films obtained from basic and acid solutions, respectively. The influence of additions of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mass% Ag on the thermal behavior of the Cu-8 mass% Al alloy was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that the presence of silver introduces new thermal events, due to the formation of a silver-rich phase and, for additions of 10 and 12 mass% Ag, it is possible to verify the formation of the gamma (1) phase (Cu9Al4) and the metastable transitions which are only observed in alloys with a minimum of 9 mass% Al.

The structural organization of Sb2O3-SbPO4 glasses has been studied by FTIR, Raman, P-31 MAS and spin echo NMR, Mossbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES at K and L-3,L-1-Sb edges). The combined results can be explained in terms of two potential mechanisms describing the change of the Sb(m) local environment upon incorporation of Q((4))-type phosphate. The formation of the latter species requires anionic compensation that may be adjusted by (a) formation of non bridging oxygen or (b) formation of SbO4E- groups (E = non-bonding electron pair). The second model is favored.

Oxamniquine polymeric prodrug with potential antischistosomal activity was prepared using dextran T-70 as a carrier, which was analysed by (HNMR)-H-1, C-13 NMR and IR spectroscopy. The formation of the oxamniquine salt was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) which showed a different thermal behaviour when compared to the physical mixture.

The reduction of phenyl benzoates with nitro substituents at the 2-,3- and 4-positions of the benzoates in N,N-dimethylformamide is reported. The phenyl 4- and 3-nitrobenzoate are reduced in two cathodic steps. The first one, at about -0.9 V vs. SCE, a reversible one-electron process, gives a rather stable anion radical. The second reduction step at potentials between -1.5 and -2.0 V vs. SCE leads to formation of the dianion, which decomposes giving free phenol in good yields (> 80%). on the other hand, the phenyl 2-nitrobenzoate is reduced in one cathodic step. This step occurs at -0.9 V with formation of an unstable anion radical which decomposes via C-O bond cleavage, giving phenol with a yield of ca. 80%. The mechanisms of the reduction of these compounds are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. S.A.
