Acoustic repertoire and calling behavior of Scinax fuscomarginatus (Anura, Hylidae)

Vocalizations are important in anuran communication, especially during the breeding season. Calling affects spatial organization of males at breeding sites, promotes attraction of new individuals to the chorus, and attracts mature females for reproduction. We describe four distinct vocalizations (advertisement calls, sporadic calls, and two types of aggressive calls) emitted by adult males of Scinax fuscomarginatus. With the exception of the advertisement call, the remaining descriptions are novel. We also describe calling sites, calling season, and nightly calling activity. Fieldwork was made in a fragment of Cerrado (Estação Ecológica de Itirapina), Municipalities of Itirapina and Brotas, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. At this ecological station, S. fuscomarginatus exhibits a complex acoustic repertoire, social interactions and a prolonged reproductive pattern similar to observations of congeneric species at other localities. This study aimed to evaluate the force degradation of synthetic elastics over time using dynamic biomechanical tests in order to find clinical parameters of what size of elastic and frequency of exchange should be used in orthodontic therapy. It was used 240 elastics of Dental Morelli, sizes 1/8", 3/16", 1/4 "and 5/16", medium force, divided in four groups. In each group was measured forces at different times, from immediate to 72 hours after immersion in water at 37°C and incubated stretched to 600% of its initial inner diameter. Tensile tests were performed on a universal testing machine EMIC DL2000 submerged in distilled water maintained at 37°C. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16.0, by the Analysis of Variance (One-Way) with Tukey´s post test. There was a greater increase in pattern of force decay of immediate measurement until 24 hours in all sizes of synthetic elastics, from which it was observed a decrease in force progressively smaller, with the exception of 5/16´´ elastic with a maximum force decay occurred at 12h. It was concluded that: the elastic synthetic Dental Morelli suffered significant force degradation over time, with reduction of approximately 70% of the initial force during 24 hours of stretching, followed by a progressively smaller decrease; the amount of stretch for a ideal force in intermaxillary therapies depends on the distance between the points of attachment of elastic, being necessary to consult the tables to choose the size, force and frequency of replacement.

Reação de laranjeiras-doces quanto à resistência a Guignardia citricarpa

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o comportamento de variedades de laranjas-doces quanto à resistência a Guignardia citricarpa, agente causal da mancha preta dos citros (MPC). Os ensaios foram conduzidos em dois campos, nos municípios de Rincão e Tambaú, SP. As mudas foram formadas em viveiro localizado na Estação Experimental de Citricultura de Bebedouro-SP. Para tal, foram utilizadas borbulhas de plantas cítricas existentes no Banco Ativo de Germoplasma de Citros da Estação Experimental de Citricultura de Bebedouro (EECB), Bebedouro-SP. Avaliou-se a severidade da doença por meio de escala de notas, de zero (ausência de sintomas) a seis (sintomas severos). A partir de tais dados, foi calculado o valor do índice de doença (ID). em 2007, no experimento de Rincão, dentre as 65 variedades avaliadas, apenas 59 produziram frutos, sendo constatada ausência de sintomas da doença em Castellana, Maçã e Olivelands. Nas demais variedades, os níveis de severidade variaram de 0,35 para Grada a 3,0 para China SRA-547. Para Tambaú, os valores de severidade variaram de 0,40 para a variedade Cadenera a 2,46 para Pera. No ano de 2008, em Rincão, todas as variedades mostraram-se suscetíveis. Os níveis de severidade verificados variaram de 0,18 para a variedade Belladona, e 3,92 para Vera 97. em Tambaú, somente a variedade Navelina não apresentou sintomas da MPC. Foi observado que, dentre as plantas que frutificaram, e com exceção daquelas cujos frutos mostraram-se assintomáticos, os valores de severidade variaram de 0,11 para a variedade Tua Mamede a 3,57 para Amares.

Comparação da precisão dos resultados do teste de tetrazolio usando a metodologia alternativa e a tradicional em sementes de soja

The use of tetrazolium testing is recognized in the soybean seed quality control due to the large amount of data which it provides. Although it is considered a quick test, in 1998 an alternative methodology was proposed for the seed preconditioning, which allows 10 hours of time saving in seeds preparation. The objective of this research is to compare the accuracy of the new and the traditional tetrazolium testing. Three soybean seed genotypes were used, Conquista, Garantia and M-soy 8400, all 2000/2001 crop. The seeds were evaluated in relation to germination, evaluated with the traditional (TZt) and the alternative (Tza) tetrazolium test as well as with the accelerated aging performed in two different conditions (45 degrees C 24h(-1) and 45 degrees C 72h(-1)). After aging, the seeds too were submitted to TZt and Tza testing. The experimental design was a randomized blocks, with four replicates the 50 seeds per genotype in every evaluation, with exception only for tetrazolium test, with two replicates. The averages were compared in the Tukey test level of 5% probability. The comparison between the two methodologies in relation to level of vigor (class 1 to 3) and germination potential (class 1 to 5) indicated no statistical discrepancies, for aged non-aged seeds. This, the use of the alternative tetrazolium test is recommend in case a reduced seed preparation time is needed.

Damping behavior of continuous fiber/metal composite materials by the free vibration method

Fiber metal laminates (FML) offer significant improvements over current available materials for aircraft structures due to their excellent mechanical characteristics and relatively low density. Non-destructive testing techniques are being used in the characterization of composite materials. Among these, vibration testing is one of the most used tools because it allows the determination of the mechanical properties. In this work, the viscoelastic properties such as elastic (E') and viscous (E) responses were obtained for aluminum 2024 alloy; carbon fiber/epoxy; glass fiber/epoxy and their hybrids aluminum 2024 alloy/carbon fiber/epoxy and aluminum 2024 alloy/glass fiber/epoxy composites. The experimental results were compared to calculated E modulus values by using the composite micromechanics approach. For all specimens studied, the experimental values showed good agreement with the theoretical values. The damping behavior, i.e. The storage modulus and the loss factor, from the aluminum 2024 alloy and fiber epoxy composites can be used to estimate the viscoelastic response of the hybrid FML. H1 but not H2 histamine antagonist receptors mediate anxiety-related behaviors and emotional memory deficit in mice subjected to elevated plus-maze testing

This study investigated the role of H1 and H2 receptors in anxiety and the retrieval of emotional memory using a Trial 1/Trial 2 (T1/T2) protocol in an elevated plus-maze (EPM). Tests were performed on 2 consecutive days, designated T1 and T2. Before T1, the mice received intraperitoneal injections of saline (SAL), 20 mg/kg zolantidine (ZOL, an H2 receptor antagonist), or 8.0 or 16 mg/kg chlorpheniramine (CPA, an H1 receptor antagonist). After 40 min, they were subjected to the EPM test. In T2 (24 h later), each group was subdivided into two additional groups, and the animals from each group were re-injected with SAL or one of the drugs. In T1, the Student t-test showed no difference between the SAL and ZOL or 8 mg/kg CPA groups with respect to the percentages of open arm entries (%OAE) and open arm time (%OAT). However, administration of CPA at the highest dose of 16 mg/kg decreased %OAE and %OAT, but not locomotor activity, indicating anxiogenic-like behavior. Emotional memory, as revealed by a reduction in open arm exploration between the two trials, was observed in all experimental groups, indicating that ZOL and 8 mg/kg CPA did not affect emotional memory, whereas CPA at the highest dose affected acquisition and consolidation, but not retrieval of memory. Taken together, these results suggest that H1 receptor, but not H2, is implicated in anxiety-like behavior and in emotional memory acquisition and consolidation deficits in mice subjected to EPM testing.

Expectativas positivas com o uso de álcool e o beber se embriagando: diferenças de gênero em estudo do Projeto GENACIS, São Paulo, Brasil

O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar as expectativas de homens e mulheres com relação ao uso do álcool e a associação dessas com o comportamento de beber com embriaguez. Foi realizado inquérito epidemiológico, domiciliar, transversal, de base populacional, com amostra probabilística estratificada por conglomerados, na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, Brasil. Foram entrevistadas 2.083 pessoas de ambos os sexos utilizando-se o questionário GENACIS (Gender, Alcohol and Culture: An International Study). Beber com embriaguez foi considerada variável dependente, e foram construídos modelos de regressão logística para cada sexo, ajustando-se os modelos para idade, escolaridade e renda. Todas as expectativas, exceto achar mais fácil falar com companheiro, associaram-se ao comportamento de beber com embriaguez. Nosso estudo mostrou que beber com embriaguez pode estar associado a expectativas com uso do álcool. Compreender essas expectativas pode contribuir para elaboração de estratégias mais efetivas de prevenção do beber excessivo.
