Large single crystals have been obtained of SIII-SPIII, a phospholipase A2 from the venom of Bothrops jararacussu. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic system space group C222, and diffract X-rays to a resolution of 1.9 Å. Preliminary analysis reveals the presence of one molecule in the crystallographic asymmetric unit. The crystal structure is currently being determined using molecular replacement techniques.

The kinetics of Ag-rich precipitates formation in the Cu-2 wt.% Al alloy with additions of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 wt.% Ag was studied using microhardness changes with temperature and time, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicated that an increase in the Ag content decreases the activation energy for Ag-rich precipitates formation, and that it is possible to estimate the values of the diffusion and nucleation activation energies for the Ag precipitates. The effect of 4 mass% Ag addition on the thermal behavior of the Cu-9 mass% Al alloy was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results showed that the presence of silver causes (Cu)-alpha+(alpha+gamma1)-->(Cu)-alpha+beta transformation to occur in two stages. In the first one, part of the produced beta phase combines with the precipitated Ag to give a silver-rich phase and in the second one the transformation is completed. The formation of this silver-rich phase seems to be enhanced at very low cooling rates.
Influence of particle size on the properties of Pt-Ru/C catalysts prepared by a microemulsion method
Resumo:
Pt-Ru/C nanocatalysts were prepared by a microemulsion method using different values of water/surfactant molar ratio in order to get different particle sizes. Crystallite sizes and structural properties were determined by X-ray diffraction. Particle size and distribution were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and average composition was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to estimate the amount of supported metals. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated the presence of hydrous ruthenium oxides in the as-prepared catalysts. Results for the oxidation of adsorbed CO as well as for methanol oxidation revealed significant differences in the behavior of the prepared catalysts. All together, the results demonstrate that the variation of particle size produces changes in other properties of the Pt-Ru/C catalysts and that to establish direct correlations between electrocatalytic activity and particle size is not possible because the effects of the different parameters cannot be separated. The reverse martensitic transformation in the Cu-10 wt%Al-6 wt%Ag alloy was studied by classical differential thermal analysis (IDTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicated that the presence of Ag in the Cu-10%Al alloy is responsible for the separation of the competitive reactions that occur during the reverse martensitic transformation and is also associated to an increase in the disordering degree at high temperatures, when compared with alloys without Ag addition. NiTiO3 (NTO) nanoparticles encapsulated with SiO2 were prepared by the sol-gel method resulting on core-shell structure. Changes on isoelectric point as a function of silica were evaluated by means of zeta potential. The NTO nanoparticles heat treated at 600 degrees C were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. TEM observations showed that the mean size of NTO is in the range of 2.5-42.5 nm while the thickness of SiO2 shell attained 1.5-3.5 nm approximately.

Thermogravimetry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and other analytical techniques (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis; Scanning Electron Microscopy; Mapping Surface; X-ray Diffraction; Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and Cold Vapor Generation Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) have been used to study the reaction of mercury with platinum foils. The results suggest that, when heated, the electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Pt to form intermetallic compounds each having a different stability, indicated by at least three mass loss steps. Intermetallic compounds such as PtHg4, PtHg and PtHg2 were characterized by XRD. These intermetallic compounds were the main products formed on the surface of the samples after partial removal of bulk mercury via thermal desorption. The Pt(Hg) solid solution formation caused great surface instability, attributed to the atomic size factor between Hg and Pt, facilitating the acid solution's attack to the surface.

The influence of additions of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mass% Ag on the thermal behavior of the Cu-8 mass% Al alloy was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that the presence of silver introduces new thermal events, due to the formation of a silver-rich phase and, for additions of 10 and 12 mass% Ag, it is possible to verify the formation of the gamma (1) phase (Cu9Al4) and the metastable transitions which are only observed in alloys with a minimum of 9 mass% Al.

The influence of dopants commonly used in SnO2 varistor ceramics, such as CoO, Cr2O3 or Nb2O5, on the structural properties of SnO2 was investigated. Several SnO2-based ceramics containing only one of the dopants were prepared and characterized. Spectroscopic investigations [visible, near infrared (IR) and IR region] were performed to obtain information about dopants valence states inside the ceramics, as well as about their influence on electronic structure of the material. Structural properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and mechanisms of dopant incorporation were proposed. Obtained results were confirmed with results of the electrical measurements. Microstructural changes in doped ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis that showed great differences in densities, grain size, and morphology of the SnO2 ceramics depending on type of dopants and their distribution. It is already known that the behaviour of the honeybee Apis mellifera is influenced by the Earth's magnetic field. Recently it has been proposed that iron-rich granules found inside the fat body cells of this honeybee had small magnetite crystals that were responsible for this behaviour. In the present work, we studied the iron containing granules from queens of two species of honeybees (A. mellifera and Scaptotrigona postica) by electron microscopy methods in order to clarify this point. The granules were found inside rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis of granules from A. mellifera showed the presence of iron, phosphorus and calcium. The same analysis performed on the granules of S. postica also indicated the presence of these elements along with the additional element magnesium. The granules of A. mellifera were composed of apoferritin-like particles in the periphery while in the core, clusters of organised particles resembling holoferritin were seen. The larger and more mineralised granules of S. postica presented structures resembling ferritin cores in the periphery, and smaller electron dense particles inside the bulk. Electron spectroscopic images of the granules from A. mellifera showed that iron, oxygen and phosphorus were co-localised in the ferritin-like deposits. These results indicate that the iron-rich granules of these honeybees are formed by accumulation of ferritin and its degraded forms together with elements present inside the rough endoplasmic reticulum, such as phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. It is suggested that the high level of phosphate in the milieu would prevent the crystallisation of iron oxides in these structures, making very unlikely their participation in magnetoreception mechanisms. They are most probably involved in iron homeostasis. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.
