The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian has been one of most used models to study the electronic structure of polyacetylene (PA) chains. It has been reported in the literature that in the SSH framework a disordered soliton distribution can not produce a metallic regime. However, in this work (using the same SSH model and parameters) we show that this is possible. The necessary conditions for true metals (non-vanishing density of states and extended wavefunctions around the Fermi level) are obtained for soliton concentration higher than 6% through soliton segregation (clustering). These results are consistent with recent experimental data supporting disorder as an essential mechanism behind the high conductivity of conducting polymers. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. We show room temperature charge-density wave (CDW) characteristics in d.c. and a.c. electric data in pressed pellets of lightly doped poly(3-methylthiophene). The possibility of a Peierls glass is discussed and metastables states are observed. D.C. and A.C. data also show a state with negative differencial resistance.

Room temperature ferromagnetic behavior has been observed in pressed pellets of doped poly(3-methylthiophene). In this work we show that thermoremance data taken in two different ways favours the interpretation of data in terms of the Dzialoshinski-Moriya anisotropic superexchange interaction of the polarons via dopant anions giving rise to weak ferromagnetism.

Field-dependent conductivity at low electric fields was observed from low to room temperature in pressed pellets of doped poly(3-methylthiophene). The room temperature data showed good agreement with Bardeen's theory of charge-density wave depinning and the values of the parameters obtained are consistent with a strong electron-phonon interaction as expected for quasi-one dimensional systems. From Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) data in pressed pellets of BF4 - doped Poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) we obtained simultaneously the paramagnetic susceptibility and. the microwave conductivity. We observed a transition from a high-temperature insulator state to a room-temperature metallic state. Around 240K. evidence of a Peierls transition is observed, but if the sample is slowly cooled, this transition is partially suppressed. DC conductivity data taken with the sample quenched to 79 K show a non-linear I-V response for very small electric fields, suggesting depinning of Charge-Density Wave (CDW). The data for heating and cooling the system above room temperature, indicate the formation of bipolarons.

The thermal behavior of blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride), or PVDF, and poly(o-methoxyaniline) doped with toluene sulfonic acid was studied by thermogravimetic analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blends with thermal and electrical conductivity stabler than the conductive polymer alone were obtained. Nevertheless, degradation occurs after a long period of time (500 h) at high temperatures. The possible association of the conductivity decay with dopant loss, degradation and structural and morphological changes of the blend is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The incorporation of conducting polymer into a conventional polymer matrix has received attention because of the possibility of combining the good processability and mechanical performance of the conventional polymer with the electrical and optical properties of conducting polymer. In this work, flexible films of polyurethane (PU) and Poli(o-metoxyaniline)(POMA) blends were obtained by casting and investigated using thermally stimulated depolarisation current (TSDC) measurements. Two relaxation peaks were found in the range of-20°C to 90°C. The first one at T=24°C was attributed as α relaxation associated to the glass transition of PU/POMA blend and the second one located at T=60°C can be attributed to space charge.

The widespread use of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) in the active layers of organic solar cells indicates that it possesses chemical stability and solubility suitable for such an application. However, it would be desirable to have a material that can maintain these properties but with a smaller bandgap, which would lead to more efficient energy harvesting of the solar spectrum. Fifteen P3HT derivatives were studied using the Density Functional Theory. The conclusion is that it is possible to obtain compounds with significantly smaller bandgaps and with solubility and stability similar to that of P3HT, mostly through the binding of oxygen atoms or conjugated organic groups to the thiophenic ring. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
