Solid-state compounds of general formula Ln(2)L(3)center dot nH(2)O, where L represents 1,4-bis(3-carboxy-3-oxo-prop-1-enyl)benzene and Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, were synthesized. Complexometric titrations with EDTA, thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy have been employed to characterize and to study the thermal behavior of these compounds in dynamic air atmosphere. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, crystallinity, and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds.

The babassu (Orbignya phalerata) is a native tree found in northern Brazil. Extracts of the babassu coconut have been widely used in industry. Babassu flour has about 60% starch, thus, besides nourishment it can be used as an alternative biofuel source. However, the properties of this starch lack of study and understanding. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the thermal behavior of raw babassu flour and its solid hydrolyzed fraction. The analyses were carried out using SHIMADZU DSC and TG thermic analyzers. The results demonstrated a reduction in thermal stability of the solid hydrolyzed fraction compared to raw matter. The kinetic parameters were investigated using non-isothermal methods and the parameters obtained for its decomposition process were an E(a) of 166.86 kJ mol(-1) and a frequency factor (beta) of 6.283 x 1014 min(-1); this was determined to be a first order reaction (n = 1). The use of oxygen to enrich the combustion air can be an attractive technique to increase capacity of an incinerator originally designed to operate with air, If incinerator parameters such as operation temperature, turbulence level and residence time are fixed for a certain fuel supply rate, it is possible to increase the residue consumption rate using enriched air. This paper presents the thermal analysis for operation with enriched air of an aqueous residue experimental incinerator. The auxiliary fuel was diesel oil. The theoretical results showed that there is a considerable increase in the incineration ratio up to approximately 50% of O-2 in the oxidiser. The tendency was confirmed experimentally. Thermal analysis was demonstrated to be an important tool to predict possible incinerator capacity increase. (C) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Background: the aim of the present study was to compare the effects of Er:YAG and diode laser treatments of the root surface on intrapulpal temperature after scaling and root planing with hand instruments. Methods: Fifteen extracted single-rooted teeth were scaled and root planed with hand instruments. The teeth were divided into 3 groups of 5 each and irradiated on their buccal and lingual surfaces: group A: Er:YAG laser, 2.94 mum/100 mJ/10 Hz/ 30 seconds; group B: diode laser, 810 nm/1.0 W/0.05 ms/30 seconds; group C: diode laser, 810 nm/1.4 W/0.05 ms/30 seconds. The temperature was monitored by means of a type T thermocouple (copper-constantan) positioned in the pulp chamber to assess pulpal temperature during and before irradiation. Afterwards, the specimens were longitudinally sectioned, and the buccal and lingual surfaces of each root were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Results: In the Er:YAG laser group, the thermal analysis revealed an average temperature of -2.2 +/- 1.5degreesC, while in the diode laser groups, temperatures were 1.6 +/- 0.8degreesC at 1.0 W and 3.3 +/- 1.0degreesC at 1.4 W. Electronic micrographs revealed that there were no significant morphological changes, such as charring, melting, or fusion, in any group, although the specimens were found to be more irregular in the Er:YAG laser group. Conclusions: the application of Er:YAG and diode lasers at the utilized parameters did not induce high pulpal temperatures. Root surface irregularities were more pronounced after irradiation with an Er:YAG laser than with a diode laser.

The Brazilian sugarcane industry shows a great amount of generated sludge which should be utilized adequately. Two sludge samples, aerobic and anaerobic, were collected. Both were evaluated by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (DTA) as well as X-ray power diffraction. These compounds show variations of mass between 30 and 140 A degrees C due to the dehydration stage. The DTA curves show that the compounds have an exothermic reaction between 450 and 550 A degrees C, which indicates that this can be used as an energy source. Details concerning the kinetic parameters of the dehydration and thermal decomposition have also been described here. The kinetic study of these stages was evaluated in open crucibles under nitrogen atmosphere. The obtained data were evaluated with the isoconversional kinetic method. The results show that different activation energies were obtained for thermal decomposition.

The thermal behavior of Cu-Al alloys with 17, 19 and 21 at.%Al was examined by differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of the gamma phase (Al4Cu9) was clearly detected for the Cu-19 at.%Al alloy and caused the alpha (2) phase disordering process in two stages. The tendency to increase the alpha (2) dissolution precipitates with the increase in the Al content seems to be reverted for compositions at about 21 at.%Al and the heating/cooling ratio seems to influence the thermal response of this process. The presence of the endothermic peak corresponding to the beta (1)--> beta transformation depends on an incomplete beta decomposition reaction. The variation of the heating rate showed that the beta (1)-->(alpha+gamma (1)) decomposition is the dominant reaction for alloys containing 19 and 21 at.%Al.

The Co(II)-diclofenac complex was evaluated by simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DTA curve profile shows one exothermic peak because of the transition phase of the compound between 170 and 180 A degrees C, which was confirmed by X-ray powder diffractometry. The transition phase behavior was studied by DSC curves at several heating rates of a sample mass between 1 and 10 mg in nitrogen atmosphere and in a crucible with and without a lid. Thus, the kinetic parameters were evaluated using an isoconversional non-linear fitting proposed by Capela and Ribeiro. The results show that the activation energy and pre-exponential factor for the transition phase is dependant on the different experimental conditions. Nevertheless, these results indicate that the kinetic compensation effect shows a relationship between them.
