Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of shortening the etching time on the bond strength of a conventional and a self-etching primer adhesive system used in primary tooth dentin.Methods. Flat dentin surfaces were obtained from 24 primary molars, randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups. The adhesive systems Single Bond and Clearfil SE Bond were applied in two groups according to the manufacturers' recommendations. In the other two groups, the adhesives were applied after half-time of acid etching, 7 s for Single Bond and 10 s for Clearfil SE Primer. Resin crowns were built up and after 24 h storage in water at 37 ° C, the teeth were sectioned to produce beams with cross-sectional area of approximately 0.49 mm(2). Specimens were tested in tension at 0.5 mm/min until failure. Fractured specimens were analyzed to determine the failure mode.Results. Tensile bond strengths for Single Bond in primary dentin were higher than for Clearfil SE Bond. Shortening of acid etching time improved bond strength only for Single Bond, while no statistically significant difference was observed for Clearfil SE Bond when both etching times were compared.Significance. No detrimental effect on bond strength was observed when the time of acid etching was shortened in 50%. Shortening the time for a procedure in a small child without compromising the quality of the work is a very important finding for the practicing pediatric dentist. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: To analyze the smear layer and the hybrid layer in noncarious and carious dentin prepared by different cutting instruments and restored with composite resin. Study design: Cavities were randomly prepared in 160 specimens (noncarious and artificial carious dentin) by high-speed diamond tips (KG Sorensen 1013), air abrasion system (Prepstart, Danville Engineering), ultrasonic tip (CVDentus 8.3231-1), and ultrasonic tip associated with ultrasonic cavitation by water for 10 s. Half of the cavities in each group were conditioned with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s. The amount of smear layer and dentinal tubules present were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and graded from 0 to 3. Cavities were prepared in another 20 noncarious specimens and 20 carious specimens and restored with adhesive composite resin system. The restorations were hemisected longitudinally and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the hybrid layer and resinous prolongation characteristics, using scores ranging from 1 to 6. Results: The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests at 5% of significance level. There was evidence that the most efficient smear layer removal was the acid etching in the noncarious dentin and the water ultrasonic cavitation in the carious dentin. The hybrid layer formed on the noncarious and carious dentin prepared by the ultrasonic tip was more regular than in the specimens prepared by high-speed diamond tip, with many resinous prolongations. Conclusion: The ultrasonic tip seems to be a promising tool for carious dentin cavity preparation. Microsc. Res. Tech. 73:597-605, 2010. (C) 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Titanium surface texture and chemistry modification successfully improves the host response and consequently the bone-to-implant contact surrounding dental implants. The aim of the present study was to investigate, using histomorphometrical-analysis, the effects of titanium surface modification by laser-ablation (Nd:YAG) followed by thin chemical deposition of HA. Forty-eight rabbits received one implant by tibiae of AS-machined (MS), laser-modified (LMS), or biomimetic hydroxyapatite-coated (HA) surface. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area (BBT) were evaluated after 4, 8, and 12 weeks, at cortical and cancellous regions. Average BIC in the cortical region was higher (P < 0.001) on the LMS and HA implants for all periods, with no differences between LMS and HA. For the cancellous area, the LMS and HA implants showed higher (P < 0.01) BIC than MS at the initial periods. The LMS and HA showed similar values in the cortical region, but a tendency of higher values for HA in the cancellous region was observed in all periods. For the BBT, the differences were found only between HA and MS after 4 weeks in the cortical region (P < 0.05), and after 12 weeks in the cancellous area (P < 0.05). Our results showed that HA biomimetic coating preceded by laser treatment induced the contact osteogenesis and allowed the formation of a more stable boneimplant interface, even in earlier periods. Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the effects of saliva substitutes (modified with respect to calcium, phosphates, and fluorides) in combination with a high-concentrated fluoride toothpaste on demineralised dentin. Methods: Before and after demineralisation of bovine dentin specimens (subsurface lesions; 37 degrees C, pH 5.0, 5 d), one-quarter of each specimen's surface was covered with nail varnish (control of sound/demineralised tissue). Subsequently, specimens were exposed to original Saliva natura (saturation with respect to octacalciumphosphate [S(OCP)]: 0.03; SN 0), or to three lab-produced Saliva natura modifications (S(OCP): 1, 2, and 3; SN 1-3) for 2 and 5 weeks (37 degrees C). An aqueous solution (S(OCP): 2.5) served as positive control (PC). Two times daily (2 min each), Duraphat toothpaste (5000 ppm F(-); Colgate)/saliva substitute slurry (ratio 1:3) was applied gently. Differences in mineral losses (Delta Delta Z) and lesion depths (Delta LD) between values before and after exposure were microradiographically evaluated. Results: After both treatment periods specimens immersed in SN 0 revealed significantly higher mineral losses (lower Delta Delta Z values) and lesion depths (lower Delta LD) compared to PC (p < 0.05; ANOVA). After 5 weeks, specimens stored in SN 1 and 2 showed significantly higher mineral losses compared to PC (p < 0.05), while those stored in SN 3 showed similar results (p > 0.05). No differences in mineral loss could be observed between SN 2 and 3 (p > 0.05).Conclusions: Under the conditions of this limited protocol, the combination of Saliva natura solutions slightly saturated with respect to OCP in combination with a high-concentrated fluoride toothpaste enabled remineralisation of dentin in vitro. Several studies have assessed the morphology and thickness of hybrid layer, the dentin bend strengths as well as sealing ability of dentin adhesive systems. However, few in vivo studies have evaluated the biocompatibility of the adhesive systems following application to deep dentin or directly to the pulp of human teeth. Many studies performed in non-human primate teeth or teeth of rats have reported pulp healing and dentin bridging following pulp capping with bonding agents. In addition, a few clinical and radiographical reports of the success of resin pulp capping have been described in the dental literature. Objectives: the aim of this review was to evaluate the literature on pulp responses following total acid etching and application of adhesive resins on deep cavities or pulp exposures. In addition, the clinical/radiographical evidence for the apparent success of vital pulp therapy and results obtained from animal and human studies were compared and discussed.Significance and conclusions: the self-etching adhesive systems may be useful and safe when applied on dentin, In contrast, persistent inflammatory reactions as well as delay in pulpal healing and failure of dentin bridging were seen in human pulps capped with bonding agents. The results observed in animal teeth cannot be directly extrapolated to human clinical conditions. Consequently, vital pulp therapy using acidic agents and adhesive resins seems to be contraindicated. (C) 2000 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) receives primary afferents involved in cardiovascular regulation. We investigated the role of NK1-receptor bearing neurons in the NTS on cardiovascular reflexes in awake rats fitted with chronic venous and arterial cannulae. These neurons were lesioned selectively with saporin conjugated with substance P (SP-SAP, 2 mu M, bilateral injections of 20 nL in the subpostremal NTS, or 200 nL in both the subpostremal and the commissural NTS). Before, and 7 and 14 days after injection of SP-SAP, we measured changes in blood pressure and heart rate induced by i.v. injection of phenylephrine and nitroprusside (baroreceptor reflex), cyanide (arterial chemoreceptor reflex), and phenylbiguanide (Bezold-Jarisch reflex). The smaller injections with SP-SAP completely abolished NK1 receptor staining in the subpostremal NTS. The larger injections abolished NK1 receptor immunoreactivity in an area that extended from the commissural NTS to the rostral end of the subpostremal NTS. The lesions seemed to affect only a limited number of neurons, since neutral red stained sections did not show any obvious reduction in cell number. The smaller lesions reduced the gain of baroreflex bradycardia and the hypotension induced by phenylbiguanide. The larger lesions completely abolished the response to phenylbiguanide, blocked the baroreflex bradycardia induced by phenylephrine, severely blunted the baroreflex tachycardia, and blocked the bradycardia and reduced the hypertension induced by cyanide. Thus, these responses depend critically on NK1-receptor bearing neurons in the NTS. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
