Lotus tetragonolobus lectin (LTA) is a fucose-specific legume lectin. Although several studies report a diverse combination of biological activities for LTA, little is known about the mechanisms involved in L-fucosyl oligosaccharide recognition. The crystal structure of LTA at 2.0 angstrom resolution reveals a different legume lectin tetramer. Its structure consists of a homotetramer composed of two back-to-back GS4-like dimers arranged in a new mode, resulting in a novel tetramer. The LTA N-linked carbohydrate at Asn4 and the unusual LTA dimer-dimer interaction are related to its particular mode of tetramerization. In addition, we used small angle X-ray scattering to investigate the quaternary structure of LTA in solution and to compare it to the crystalline structure. Although the crystal structure of LTA has revealed a conserved metal-binding site, its L-fucose-binding site presents some punctual differences. Our investigation of the new tetramer of LTA and its fucose-binding site is essential for further studies related to cross-linking between LTA and complex divalent L-fucosyl carbohydrates. This paper develops a framework for the interpretation of ionic insertion/deinsertion reactions in an aqueous environment taking place in transition-metal hexacyanoferrates of the general formula KhFek3+ [Fe2+ (CN)(6)](l)center dot mH(2)O, also called Prussian Blue. Three different processes were fully separated in the electrochemistry of these films. It was clearly identified that one of these electrochemical processes involves the insertion/deinsertion of H3O+ (hydrated protons) through the channels of the KhFek3+ [Fe2+ (CN)(6)](l) center dot mH(2)O structure to reach the film electroneutrality during the electron transfer between Everitt's Salt and Prussian Blue. The other electrochemical processes involve K+ or H+ (proton) exchange through the water crystalline structure existing in the channels of the KhFek3+ [Fe2+(CN)(6)](l)center dot mH(2)O structure.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles by thermal treatment of a silver-aspartarne complex under inert atmosphere is described. Spherical metallic silver naroparticles with average diameter of 5 +/-2 nm were obtained by thermal treatment of the complex [Ag(C14H17N2O5)] 1/2H(2)O at 185 degrees C. Thermogravimetric and infrared analysis of the product show the occurrence of an ester bond cleavage of the aspartame ligand followed by rearrangement and release of a molecule of formaldehyde (H2CO), which is transformed in two strong reducing molecules, H-2 and CO. For silver reduction, the presence of the formaldehyde molecules seems to be the key process for the metallic nanoparticles fort-nation. The maintenance of the ligand crystalline structure, with the exception of the ester group loss, was noted as essential for nanoparticles formation and size control. The ligand crystalline structure was completely lost at 200 degrees C and particle growth and coalescence were observed above 250 degrees C. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The osseointegrated titanium implants are reliable and safe alternatives to treatments for long periods of time. For surface modification, thermal aspersion of TiO2 was used. The samples with and without TiO2 were treated with NaOH and SBF in order to obtain a layer of HA. Characterization was done by SEM and FTIR. The images of HA obtained by SEM show a uniform morphology and a porous structure with spherical particles. The IR spectra show that the surface of Ticp/ TiO2 is more favorable for the HA deposit, as can be seen by the increase of the crystalline structure and the very intense and defined bands of the OH group of HA that is verified about 3571 and 630 cm-1. Thus the Ticp/ TiO2 surface presents a satisfactory nucleation of HA when compared to Ticp.

In this study, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was prepared from the acid hydrolysis of bacterial cellulose (BC) produced in culture medium of static Acetobacter xylinum. The MCC-BC produced an average particle size between 70 and 90 mu m and a degree of polymerization (DP) of 250. The characterization of samples was performed by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The MCC shows a lower thermal stability than the pristine cellulose, which was expected due to the decrease in the DP during the hydrolysis process. In addition, from X-ray diffractograms, we observed a change in the crystalline structure. The images of SEM for the BC and MCC show clear differences with modifications of BC fiber structure and production of particles with characteristics similar to commercial MCC.

Titanium oxide is a good candidate as new support for hydrotreating (HDT) catalysts, but has the inconvenience of presenting small surface area and poor thermal stability. To overcome these handicaps TiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides were proposed as catalyst support. Here, the results concerning the preparation, characterization and testing of molybdenum catalyst supported on titania-alumina are presented. The support was prepared by sol-gel route using titanium and aluminum isopropoxides, chelated with acetylacetone (acac) to promote similar hydrolysis ratio for both the alcoxides. The effect of nominal complexing ratios [acac]/[Ti] and of sol aging temperature on the structural features of nanometric particles was analyzed by quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) and N-2 adsorption isotherm measurements. These characterizations have shown that the addition of acac and the increase of aging temperature favor the full dispersion of primary nanoparticles in mother acid solution. The dried powder presents a monomodal distribution of slit-shaped micropores, formed by irregular packing of platelet primary particles, surface area superior to 200 m(2) g(-1) and mean pore size of about 1 nm. These characteristics of porous texture are preserved after firing at 673 K. The diffraction patterns of sample fired above 973 K show only the presence of anatase crystalline phase. The crystalline structure of the support remained unaltered after molybdenum adsorption, but the surface area and the micropore volume were drastically reduced. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier B.V. Structural heterogeneities in SnO2.CoO-based varistors were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. In SnO2.CoO-based system doped with La2O3 and Pr2O3 two kinds of precipitate phases at grain boundary region were found. Using energy dispersive spectrometry they were found to be Co2SnO4 and Pr2Sn2O7, presenting a defined crystalline structure. It was also identified that such precipitate phases are mainly located in triple-junctions of the microstructure. HRTEM analysis revealed the existence of other two types of junctions, one as being homo-junctions of SnO2 grains and other due to twin grain boundaries inside the SnO2.CoO grain. The role of these types of junction in the overall nonlinear electrical features is also discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bismuth titanate, Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12) (BIT) nanosized powders have been successfully synthesized via high energy mechanochemical activation. The phase formation of BIT, crystal structure, microstructure, crystallite size and specific surface area were followed by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the BET specific surface area measurements. The BIT milled 2 h shows the orthorhombic crystalline structure with small amount of amorphous phase. The microstructure of Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12) ceramics sintered at 1000 degrees C for 12h exhibit plate-like grain structure.

The comprehension of the structure of starch granules is important for the understanding of its physicochemical properties. Native and sour cassava starches after being analyzed with respect to their pasting properties and baking expansion capacity, were treated with 2.2 N HCl at 38 degreesC for a maximum of nine days. The starch granules remaining after lintnerization were analyzed for amylose content and intrinsic viscosity, by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and chromatographic analysis. The results indicated that the acid hydrolysis on all starches occurred in two steps. The first one, with high hydrolysis rate, was characterized by a quick degradation of the amorphous part of the granules whereas the second step, with lower hydrolysis rate, was characterized by a higher resistance of the organized areas of the granules to acid treatment. Most of the amylose chains were found in the amorphous areas of starch granules only a small percentage was involved in the crystalline regions. The microscopic and chromatographic analysis demonstrated that the acid hydrolysis was not able to disrupt the entire granular crystalline structure. Fermented starch showed amylose and/or amylopectin chain fractions resistant to pullulanase, probably due to structural alterations during fermentation.

In this work molecular dynamics simulations were performed to reproduce the kinetic and thermodynamic transformations occurring during melt crystallization, vitrification, and glass crystallization (devitrification) of PbF2. Two potential parameters were analyzed in order to access the possibility of modeling these properties. These interionic potentials are models developed to describe specific characteristic of PbF2, and thermodynamic properties were well reproduced by one of them, while the other proved well adapted to simulate the crystalline structure of this fluoride. By a modeled nonisothermal heat treatment of the glass, it was shown that the devitrification of a cubic structure in which the Pb-Pb distances are in good agreement with theory and experiment. Polycrystalline Co7Sb2O12 compounds have been synthesized by a chemical route, which is based on a modified polymeric precursor method. In order to study the physical properties of the samples, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analyses (TG and DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), specific surface area (BET), and magnetization measurements were performed on these materials. Characterization through XRD revealed that the samples are single-phase after a heat-treatment at 1100degreesC for 2h, while the X-ray patterns of the samples heat-treated at lower temperatures revealed the presence of additional Bragg reflections belonging to the Co6Sb2O6 phase. These data were analyzed by means of Rietveld refinement and further analyze showed that Co7Sb2O12 displays an inverse spinel crystalline structure. In this structure, the Co2+ ions occupy the eight tetrahedral positions, and the sixteen octahedral positions are randomly occupied by the Sb5+ and Co2+ ions. IR studies disclosed two strong absorption bands, v(1) and v(2), in the expected spectral range for a spinel-type binary oxide with space group Fd3m. Exploratory studies concerning the magnetic properties indicated that this sample presents a spin-glass transition at T-f similar to 64 K. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Metal complexes of calcium with 5,7-dibromo, 7-iodo and 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinolate were precipitated in aqueous ammonia and acetone medium, except for the solid state compound with 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline which hasn't been obtained under these conditions. The complexes obtained through the mentioned precipitation are Ca[(C9H4ONBr2)(2)](3).H2O, Ca[(C9H5ONI)(2)].2H(2)O and Ca[(C9H4ONICl)(2)].2.5H(2)O. Their intermediate from the thermal decomposition found through TG/DTA curves in air indicated the presence of different kinds of calcium carbonates related to the reversibility and crystalline structure, depending on the original compounds. The initial compounds and the intermediate from the thermal decomposition were also characterized through IR spectra and X-ray diffraction.

Amorphous LiNbO3 thin films processed by polymeric precursor method exhibited efficient luminescence at room temperature. The films were deposited on silicon substrates and treated at 200degreesC for different times. The photoluminescence emission yield decreases with the increase of the treatment time and disappears for crystalline films. A theoretical-experimental study was performed on amorphous and crystalline materials to understand the influence of the defects on the photoluminescence properties. The theoretical band gap obtained by the difference of energy between the HOMO and LUMO levels is larger for crystalline structure when compared with amorphous material. This result, which is in agreement with experimental band gaps obtained from optical measurements, revealed the emergence of new electronic levels for the amorphous material, which are localized in the wide band gap of the crystalline structure. These new electronic levels may explain the photoluminescence observed at room temperature for LiNbO3 amorphous films.

Polycrystalline tin oxide thin films were prepared from ethanol solution of SnCl2.H2O (concentrations: 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mol/dm(3)) at different substrate temperatures ranging from 300 to 450 degreesC. The kinetic deposition processes were studied in terms of various process parameters. The crystal phases, crystalline structure, grain size and surface morphology are revealed in accordance to X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Texture coefficients (TCs) for (110), (2 0 0), (2 11) and (3 0 1) reflections of the tetragonal SnO2 were calculated. Structural characteristics of deposited films with respect to varying precursor chemistry and substrate temperature are presented and discussed. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.
