A numerical study of mass conservation of MAC-type methods is presented, for viscoelastic free-surface flows. We use an implicit formulation which allows for greater time steps, and therefore time marching schemes for advecting the free surface marker particles have to be accurate in order to preserve the good mass conservation properties of this methodology. We then present an improvement by using a Runge-Kutta scheme coupled with a local linear extrapolation on the free surface. A thorough study of the viscoelastic impacting drop problem, for both Oldroyd-B and XPP fluid models, is presented, investigating the influence of timestep, grid spacing and other model parameters to the overall mass conservation of the method. Furthermore, an unsteady fountain flow is also simulated to illustrate the low mass conservation error obtained.

A study is presented of the mass and spin-parity of the new boson recently observed at the LHC at a mass near 125 GeV. An integrated luminosity of 17.3 fb-1, collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, is used. The measured mass in the ZZ channel, where both Z bosons decay to e or μ pairs, is 126.2±0.6(stat) ±0.2(syst) GeV. The angular distributions of the lepton pairs in this channel are sensitive to the spin-parity of the boson. Under the assumption of spin 0, the present data are consistent with the pure scalar hypothesis, while disfavoring the pure pseudoscalar hypothesis. © 2013 CERN. Invariant mass spectra for jets reconstructed using the anti-k T and CambridgeAachen algorithms are studied for different jet grooming techniques in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1, recorded with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Leading-order QCD predictions for inclusive dijet and W/Z+jet production combined with parton-shower Monte Carlo models are found to agree overall with the data, and the agreement improves with the implementation of jet grooming methods used to distinguish merged jets of large transverse momentum from softer QCD gluon radiation. © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

A detailed description is reported of the analysis used by the CMS Collaboration in the search for the standard model Higgs boson in pp collisions at the LHC, which led to the observation of a new boson. The data sample corresponds to integrated luminosities up to 5.1 fb-1 at √=7 TeV, and up to 5.3 fb-1 at √ s=8 TeV. The results for five Higgs boson decay modes γγ, ZZ, WW, ττ, and bb, which show a combined local significance of 5 standard deviations near 125 GeV, are reviewed. A fit to the invariant mass of the two high resolution channels, γγ and ZZ → 4ℓ, gives a mass estimate of 125.3 ± 0.4 (stat.) ± 0.5 (syst.) GeV. The measurements are interpreted in the context of the standard model Lagrangian for the scalar Higgs field interacting with fermions and vector bosons. The measured values of the corresponding couplings are compared to the standard model predictions. The hypothesis of custodial symmetry is tested through the measurement of the ratio of the couplings to the W and Z bosons. All the results are consistent, within their uncertainties, with the expectations for a standard model Higgs boson. The aim of this study was to evaluate stress distribution with different implant systems through photoelasticity. Five models were fabricated with photoelastic resin PL-2. Each model was composed of a block of photoelastic resin (10 x 40 x 45 mm) with an implant and a healing abutment: model 1, internal hexagon implant (4.0 X 10 mm; Conect AR, Conexao, Sao Paulo, Brazil); model 2, Morse taper/internal octagon implant (4.1 x 10 mm; Standard, Straumann ITI, Andover, Mass); model 3, Morse taper implant (4.0 x 10 mm; AR Morse, Conexao); model 4, locking taper implant (4.0 x 11 mm; Bicon, Boston, Mass); model 5, external hexagon implant (4.0 x 10 mm; Master Screw, Conexao). Axial and oblique load (45) of 150 N were applied by a universal testing machine (EMIC-DL 3000), and a circular polariscope was used to visualize the stress. The results were photographed and analyzed qualitatively using Adobe Photoshop software. For the axial load, the greatest stress concentration was exhibited in the cervical and apical thirds. However, the highest number of isochromatic fringes was observed in the implant apex and in the cervical adjacent to the load direction in all models for the oblique load. Model 2 (Morse taper, internal octagon, Straumann ITI) presented the lowest stress concentration, while model 5 (external hexagon, Master Screw, Conexao) exhibited the greatest stress. It was concluded that Morse taper implants presented a more favorable stress distribution among the test groups. The external hexagon implant showed the highest stress concentration. Oblique load generated the highest stress in all models analyzed.

We compute the tree level cross section for gluon-gluon elastic scattering taking into account a dynamical gluon mass, and show that this mass scale is a natural regulator for this subprocess cross section. Using an eikonal approach in order to examine the relationship between this gluon-gluon scattering and the elastic pp and (p) over barp channels, we found that the dynamical gluon mass is of the same order of magnitude as the ad hoc infrared mass scale m(0) underlying eikonalized QCD-inspired models. We argue that this correspondence is not an accidental result, and that this dynamical scale indeed represents the onset of nonperturbative contributions to the elastic hadron-hadron scattering. We apply the eikonal model with a dynamical infrared mass scale to obtain predictions for sigma(tot)(pp,(p) over barp), rho(pp,(p) over barp), slope B-pp,B-(p) over barp, and differential elastic scattering cross section d sigma((p) over barp)/dt at Tevatron and CERN-LHC energies.
