Effect of raloxifene on the vaginal epithelium of postmenopausal women

Objective: The objective was to analyze the effect of raloxifene oil the vaginal epithelium of postmenopausal women.Study design: In this non-randomized clinical trial, 80 women (mean age = 60.6 years) were prospectively studied. Forty patients received 60 mg/day of raloxifene (RG), and 40 women constituted it non-treated control group (CG), paired by age and time since menopause. The treated group consisted of patients with osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. Those with a diagnosis of infection ill the lower genital tract and using hormone therapy (HT) up to 6 months prior to the study were excluded. Vaginal smears were collected at baseline and after 6 months of intervention. The vaginal maturation value (VMV) was determined, and counts of superficial, intermediate and parabasal cells were performed. Smears were analyzed by only one cytopathologist who was blinded to patient data. The t-test, Wilcoxon test, and Chi-Squared test were used in the statistical analysis.Results: The study groups were homogeneous regarding age, time since menopause, parity, HT use, smoking, and body mass index. No statistically significant differences were observed in VMV median values (RG, 39.7 and 35.7; CG, 50.0 and 50.0, respectively) or in the percentage of superficial, intermediate and parabasal cells between the groups at baseline and after 6 months (p > 0.05). There was no significant correlation between VMV and age, time since menopause, previous HT use, or body mass index, in either of the groups.Conclusion: Treatment with raloxifene for 6 months has no effect on the maturation of the vaginal epithelium ill postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Aneurisma cerebral e cisto de aracnóide: a propósito de caso com hemorragia intracística

Relatamos um caso de aneurisma da bifurcação da artéria carótida interna, cuja ruptura se deu para dentro de cisto de aracnóide da fissura silviana. em revisão da literatura apenas 3 casos foram descritos. Discutimos ainda os aspectos clínicos atípicos do caso, as características dos achados cirúrgicos e uma correlação etiopatogênica entre as duas patologias.

Oligodendroglioma cístico e positividade das reações para cisticercose relato de caso

São poucos os estudos sobre gliomas «low-grade». Os oligodendrogliomas representam de 1,3 a 10% dos tumores intracerebrais. A neurocisticercose é uma das mais graves parasitoses do SNC, com evidente polimorfismo clínico e laboratorial. O objetivo deste estudo é relatar o caso de um doente com cefaléia, perda progressiva da visão, alteração do comportamento e, provas imunológicas positivas para cisticercose no líquido cístico e cefalorra-queano. Após tentativas para tratamento da neurocisticercose, sem muito sucesso, foi submetido a craniotomia frontal para exérese de tumor cístico, que revelou tratar-se de oligodendroglioma. Discutem-se aspectos relacionados aos possíveis mecanismos para associação de neurocisticercose e oligodendroglioma.

Optimization of a mouse immunization protocol with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis antigens

The objectives of the present study were to optimize the protocol of mouse immunization with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis antigens (Rifkind's protocol) and to test the modulation effect of cyclophosphamide (Cy) on the delayed hypersensitivity response (DHR) of immunized animals. Experiments were carried out using one to four immunizing doses of either crude particulate P. brasiliensis antigen or yeast-cell antigen, followed by DHR test four or seven days after the last immunizing dose. The data demonstrated that an immunizing dose already elicited response; higher DHR indices were obtained with two or three immunizing doses; there were no differences between DHR indices of animals challenged four or seven days after the last dose. Overall the inoculation of two or three doses of the yeast-cell antigen, which is easier to prepare, and DHR test at day 4 simplify the original Rifkind's immunization protocol and shorten the duration of the experiments. The modulation effect of Cy on DHR was assayed with administration of 2.5, 20 and 100 mg/kg weight at seven day intervals starting from day 4 prior to the first immunizing dose. Only the treatment with 2.5 mg Cy increased the DHR indices. Treatment with 100 mg Cy inhibited the DHR, whereas 20 mg Cy did not affect the DHR indices. Results suggest an immunostimulating effect of low dose of Cy on the DHR of mice immunized with P. brasiliensis antigens.

This paper describes the case of a horse treated in a Teaching Veterinary Hospital. The sutures of the flexor apparatus associated with cell therapy, the stem cell, provided a rapid response of repair compared to other cases treated in routine of the Hospital. The association of conventional treatments with the mononuclear fraction of bone marrow significantly contributed to the reduction of the hyperextension of the metatarsophalangeal joint. Ultrasound images showed rapid fill cell and decrease in inflammation.

Este trabalho descreve uma nova forma de ancoragem por meio de miniplacas denominada SAO®, Sistema de Apoio Ósseo para Mecânica Ortodôntica. Após a descrição do sistema, protocolos de tratamento para mordidas abertas esqueléticas são apresentados. A aplicação de cantiléveres e alças apoiadas diretamente nos tubos do sistema de ancoragem permite que associações de problemas verticais e sagitais (Classe II e III) sejam tratadas de formas distintas. A aplicação de forças leves e constantes e o controle tridimensional das forças aplicadas são o grande diferencial desse novo sistema.
